Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

15 Weeks to Boston

Schedule calls for 10 miles with 5 at 15K to 1/2  marathon pace.  The temp this morning was 9.  The road's an icy mess.  Darn road, I had wanted to break out my new shoes for today's run.  With a sore throat, runny nose all weekend and still not feeling much better this morning, I wimped out and chose the treadmill.

Put on my old Wave Rider shoes.  I hadn't run on these for awhile.  I used to run speed workout in them.  Cranked up the big fan, set the treadmill incline at 2.  Ran 2 miles warm up starting at 6 mph and gradually increased it to 7 mph.  Feeling pretty good the entire run.

Drank 250 cc after 45 min. and the rest of the liter after the run.  I could feel "hot spots" forming on the bottom of my right forefoot.  Turns out that the "breathing air holes" of the shoe last had created six "poka dot like" blisters on my R forefoot.  I need to either wear different socks or put a gel pad in place of the shoe last.  Who knows???

6 miles at tempo pace 8:34.  2 mi warm up & warm down.  10 miles in 1:28:12.  AP: 8:48.

I'm going to eat healthy from today forward.  Will record and report food intake.

AM/PM Yoga

Nutrition today:  1 yogurt, 1 boiled egg, 1 bowl of barley soup, handful of corn chips, blueberries and grape tomatoes, 1 palm size halibut, 1 sweet potato, 1 C green beans, 1500ml water.

Are you using Pfitzingers plan again this time? I used the 18/55 plan last year but I thought it was a little too hard. Maybe I will try it again this year but sub some cross training in on some of the days.

From Smooth on Mon, Jan 05, 2009 at 15:28:10

Dale,

Blisters are no problem unless it's in a race.

Kathie,

Yes, I'm using the 24/55 this time. The 18/55 worked well for me last year. I'm hoping by adding yoga and core workout I'll be able to get faster and get rid of the woes of muscle cramps. Are you training for Ogden?

From Kathie on Mon, Jan 05, 2009 at 15:42:15

No I am only going to do one Maybe two marathons this year. I will do the Lake to Lake relay, Ogden Half, Wasatch Back, Hobble Creek half, Maybe TOU and ST. George.

From Smooth on Mon, Jan 05, 2009 at 15:47:43

Kathie,

Looks like a pretty good race schedule to me. Is Lake to Lake in April? That's about one race a month leading to your goal marathon in the Fall. Good thinking and great plan. You're making your races count, quality over quantities, very smart!

Way to go Smooth. That's a great run.

I hate blisters. I am plagues with them. Pop 'em and move on!

Great work on the treadmill. It really is way too icy outside to run. The streets here look like ice skiting rinks. And they are even more dangerous when they are covered in snow! I think you were very wise to play it safe. I am ready for winter to move on!! And that is sad, I usually love winter, but not when I want to run!

Have a great week and be safe.

Cool report. I want to be you when I get over my poo poo mood. Your eats for today was great!

Hey- one fabulous thing about poo poo me is that I don't get blisters (so far ;) My feet are made of rocks and bark. I am tree woman that grew in a field of pebbles :)

From DonGardinero on Tue, Jan 06, 2009 at 00:23:21

Wow Smooth, that's some pretty healthy food you had today. I was a bad boy. Today I ate a Cheesy double beef burrito and nachos from Taco Bell, A crisp Bean burrito from Taco Maker and for dinner we had some leftover turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy. Back to eating healthier tomorrow. I guess I was just really hungry today.

From rhett on Tue, Jan 06, 2009 at 01:12:27

Smooth, you are putting in some great quality as well as quantity miles. You are reallly going to be more ready for Boston this year, and if I remember correctly, you had a great Boston last year.

Cal,

Thanks! You've had some great treadmill run paces lately.

Kelli,

I like winter for other reasons; but not running for sure.

Marion,

You are adorable and positive even in a poopoo mood. We are all going to eat good now that the holidays are over, at least 'till Valentines.

Dale,

We have to tell ourselves that we are athletes in training and we need good fuel, no more junk in the trunk.

Rhett,

Thanks! I sure hope I'm more ready for Boston. It's going to be my 13th marathon. I hope 13 means luck for me. Boston 08 was perfect. It would be sweet to improve from that.

Teena,

We need to get together for some good eats and good talk. LLL LLL LLL

Leslie,

Look who's talking. You braved the cold yesterday. You're a woman on a mission to a fitter and healthier self. I'm following YOU!!!! Going to your blog now to see what you did today.
