Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

First toughest run of the year

The weather forecast said it would be snowing tonight thru Sat. morning.  After a little juggling with the family's activities plan, I decided to go for a medium long run mid morning.  Temp was around 32w/ overcast sky.  Put on l/s shirt, tights, thermafit jacket, headband, fuel belt w/ 3 gatorade, 1 water & gel.

I ran the same route I did three weeks ago to the temple.  The road shoulder was rather narrow due to large snow banks making me nervous about the traffic which was quite heavy at times.  Drank 1/2 flask gatorade at mile 4, the other half at mile 6.  At 8 mi  I couldn't cross the road due to the heavy traffic and zero road shoulder, so I turned around and wait till it was save to take the gel (a freebie from Provo River 1/2).  The honey stinger gel was way too sweet.  Took 2nd gatorade at mile 12 and last at the end of the run.

The stretch from mile 8 to 10 always seems the toughest for me.  I think I need to start hydrating and fueling sooner.  I shed the jacket most of the way, only put it back on when the wind was blowing.

Today:  16 miles in 2:40:15.  AP: 10:00

Dec 12:  16 miles in 2:33:23.  AP: 9:35

Comparing the two runs, I realized I hadn't had a rest day this whole week.  Yesterday's run (a 6 miler with 10 intervals) was done 15 hours earlier.  Dinner was a Carl's Jr. chicken sandwich and 1/2 a burger at 4pm.  I did have a handful of chocolate dipped popcorn and 2 cookies at 9 pm.  Breakfast was yogurt and cereal.  I guess I shoud have expected poor performance today.

*******UTAH ROCKS!!! Just finished watching the Sugar Bowl.  I'm so excited for the Utes!!!  Sugar Bowl Champion!!! Perfect 13-0 season!!!  WAY TO GO UTES!!!  *******

Not too mention the fact that you have skied so much any normal woman would be in bed, but them we all know you are not just any normal woman you are SUPER SMOOTH!

From Marion on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 18:13:14

As i was running today and yesterday, I was thinking the same thing about all of the garbage I have been eating. The body likes the good stuff! (not the chocolate ;) Your run was great! Next week we'll all be feeling better after a sunday fasting-detox! :) I need my hubby to pull out my 25# bag 6 grain cereal from the back of his car! I need some horse food!

From Teena on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 18:29:03

Smooth!! 16???? You ran 16 miles in the wind??? You did so AWESOME!! I actually think you probably did a ton better than you think considering all the layers you were wearing, the cold, and the wind. AMAZING I tell you ... simply AMAZING!!!

From DonGardinero on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 19:03:08

Smooth!!! That is a very nice run, regardless!!! You had a very busy week, so you actually did very well. You did better than I would have done after all of those family activities.

You have been so super busy! All of that skiing is hard on the legs, are your legs just hammered? Then, you add all of that running, and GEESH!! You are one amazing woman, that is for sure.

You are doing GREAT! Have a RESTFUL rest of the weekend.

From Becca on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 19:37:06

That doesn't count as "poor performance" in my book! You did it!! There was snow, wind, traffic, icky gel, and freezing cold and still you did it!

From Teena on Sat, Jan 03, 2009 at 00:08:32

YES!!! WAY TO GO UTES!!!!

(love you Smooth)

From Smooth on Sat, Jan 03, 2009 at 00:14:41

Kathie!!!

My husband tells me I'm ABNORMAL!!! I spent the evening watching the Sugar Bowl. I know what you're going to say. But tonight is definitely a RED night.

Marion!!!

How about pulling that 25# bag out yourself for the extra weight training? :) I used to eat the 6 grain cereal too until I ran out.

Teena!!!

Thanks! It was tough. I'm just so glad I didn't have to go shopping afterwards which is what I usually do after Sat. run. I get to lay on the couch and watch the Sugar Bowl Game. I'm so proud of the UTES!!! Kyle Whitingham is an awesome coach.

Dale,

Thanks. I hope you and your wife are feeling better. It's no fun to be sick. Take some needed rest this weekend.

Kelli,

My legs are tired but not too bad. I took it real easy on the ski slopes.

Becca,

You are so nice!!! I guess that's what makes the actual running of the marathon that much sweeter.

From rhett on Sat, Jan 03, 2009 at 19:04:25

Smooth, very nice "medium long run" I'd say 16 miles is a long run, no medium needed. You deserve a couple rest days while the snow falls the rest of the weekend. Nice preparation so you could get that long run in.

From tarzan on Sat, Jan 03, 2009 at 20:10:23

What a 'smooth' run. Very impressive. I bet if you rest for a day or so - you will see an improvement from all the work you got carving up the slopes.

And, yes, Marion - get your own arms to pick up the cereal. You are strong enough.

From leslie on Sat, Jan 03, 2009 at 20:30:24

Smooth, I agree with all the above comments! It makes me want to go out and do better!! Tomorrow I will try and have a Smooth Run! You are tough! I love your detailed reports!!

From Marion on Sat, Jan 03, 2009 at 20:51:11

I can lift the bag- he just has the car all the time :)

From Kathie on Sat, Jan 03, 2009 at 21:05:11

Didn't you love the game. When Dale posted on Andy's blog that the score was 21-0 I thought for sure he meant Alabama was winning. We had taped the game and when we watched it later I was so happy it was the Utes winning

From Smooth on Sun, Jan 04, 2009 at 01:10:26

Rhett,

Thanks. I actually did a recovery run on Sat. and complete rest on Sun.

Tarzan,

Why is it so hard to take a rest day?

Leslie,

You had a nice COLD, ICEE, run today. GOOD JOB!!

Marion,

You're so funny. I always make my husband or son carry anything more than 10 lbs. I'm a wimpy hypocrite.

Kathie,

I can't believe we were cheering for the Utes so enthusiastically. It's very good for the Conference.

From tarzan on Sun, Jan 04, 2009 at 09:35:05

Smooth - we don't like to rest because we are addicted. I think I was smart to not do my second run last night and push up to 40 miles for the week. I fell asleep at 9 p.m. and slept until 7 a.m. I think 10 hours of sleep was a good hint.
