Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

I had not run a single mile since SGM08 10 days ago.  I had so much fun walking with my friends and went on a Fall hike to Horse Tail Falls in Alpine last Thursday.  Yesterday I went to the hospital for a colonoscopy, Dexa scan and mammogram...the works.

Today I am so ready for a run.  I had no plan, just out for an easy 5 miler.  I wore the CW-X insulator since the temp was in the low 30's.  First mile was a warm up at 9:40, average pace at 8:54, with the fastest mile at 8:37.

I am in a "re-group" phase having come off of a heavily scheduled race year.  I have run 6 marathons in the last 6 months starting with Boston and ended with SGM.  I have run a total of 12 marathons since Oct 2005.  My next goal is to BQ again at Boston 09.  I'm looking for a new and improved training program.  Meanwhile, just enjoying the free-spirited runs on these Fall days.

Smooth --

How did all of the tests go? Email me on my home email if you don't want to post that stuff here.

Okay ... I'm going to get off the computer for a while (thanks for the gentle reminder about my life). Love you!

Welcome to the blog! 6 marathons in 6 months---CRAZY!!! You are amazing.

You went to college when you were 16? That is also AMAZING! You are fast and smart!

Welcome to the blog. I am impressed with your running accomplishments.

I'm thinking about running the Spectrum 10k this next year, how did you like it?

From Smooth on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 22:27:17

Kelli,

THANKS for the warm welcome and kind compliments. I have been accused of being CRAZY... guilty as charged. I'm pleading no contest on the "fast and smart". It was a lot easier to get into college back in the 70's. Fast is all relative. THANKS, I've heard good things about you from Teena.

jona,

THANKS for the kind welcome. I loved running Spectrum 10K. I like 2007 course better even though it bottle-necked at the first mile where runners merge onto the trail. This year's course eliminated that with the last 2.5 miles winding through a little neighborhood. It's a scenic course, with great organization and prize drawing. I'll probably run it again next year.

Thanks for the information on Spectrum. I'll probably run it this next year. I'm a little worried about the "winding through a little neighborhood" part. I don't care for being next to the finish line and running all around it. It plays with my head. Oh well. I need to be better about going and driving the course before the race. Thanks again.

I'm with ya. Did you run Provo River 1/2 this year, it about drove me nuts running in a maze at the Riverwoods shop for the last 3 miles.

Who knows, SG Leisure Service might change the course for 2009 if enough runners complain about the neighborhood part of the course. The website had a pretty good course map by Google so there was no surprise. Of course driving the course beforehand will definitely help.

I didn't run Provo River this last year, but did the year before. I think I went from a 8 minute pace to 10 minute pace when I hit that last bit. URRRR! I kept hearing the sounds of the finish line just over the tree's, and I knew where the finish was, so every time we would turn back towards it I would think ok, here we are. NOT!

From Smooth on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 23:19:12

I had run Provo River 4 years in a roll. They changed the course every year. This year was the worst. I don't know why the FRB runners keep coming back every year. . Imagine making umpteen turns around the trees and bushes, crossed over the river 4 times. We could hear the finish line music forever. Just suck the wind out of ya.

OK, Spectrum is nothing like that. I was just disappointed that with so many beautiful trails in the Snow Canyon, they should be able to put 99% of a 10K course on the trail.

From jona on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 23:38:08

That sounds worse than the year I ran. It really soured me against running it. Hobble Creek is so much nicer. Isn't there two half marathons in Provo Canyon?

I'm looking forward to the Painters Half and then the Spectrum races. I haven't really seen that part of SG.

From Kelli on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 10:16:36

I have run it the last two years, and this year was definitely worse than the year before. But the beginning is so nice, well after the first 2 miles. However, after this year I am unsure if I will ever do it again!

TOU Marathon does that winding through neighborhood thing for miles. I have never walked so much in a race in my life. It really does mess with the head!
