Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

I have been goofing off the last two weeks.  Come to think of it, I've been funning it for the last 3 marathons .  Nothing wrong with that...other than my speed has suffered.

Boston 09 is 24.5 weeks away, I need to get back on track.  Teena's awesome Tempo run yesterday inspired me.  I know I'm a different runner than her.  I could NEVER run as fast as her.  Here's my old lady version of a tempo run.

6 miles Tempo run in 53:50, average pace: 8:55

Warm up mile - 10:18 (Why does it take SO LONG for an old arthritic lady on a cold day to get going...Sigh...)

Mile 2 - 9:06 (I love running this pace)

Mile 3 - 8:40

Mile 4 - 8:42 (this is my half marathon pace for a 4 hr. marathon)

Mile 5 - 8:41

Man, I've forgotten how much concentration it takes to sustain the pace on a tempo run...my mind would wander (I don't wear music)...I would get lazy...I want to enjoy the Fall scenary.

Mile 6 - 8:20 (this is my goal pace for tempo runs, eventually)

0.5 mile - 10:00 (cool down jog home)

We're remodeling a bedroon downstairs.  Hubby has an assignment for me.  I have to tape all the moldings (including the walk-in closet) so he can paint the walls when he gets home tonight.  Can I count all that bending, stretching, squatting as xtraining?

Yes, that is for sure cross training!!

Great run today! See you Saturday. You will have to work on Teena, I do not think we are running for enough for her!

From marion on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 14:57:27

Nice run! Very nice pace :)

Nice run there Smooth. I need to do more tempo runs. I dont think I have done a honest one for a while to be honest. I have just been out running how I feel it seems. Boston will be here before we know it.

Kelli & Marion --

Good, now I can add all my honeydo lists to x-training.

Look forward to meeting y'all on Sat.

Mark --

You have some nice workouts there. Last year at this time I was doing tempo runs at a faster pace. I hope it's just cause I've been slacking off and not b/c of advancing age. Getting old stinks.

From Teena on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 16:08:55

Dearest, sweetest, kindest Smooth--

NICE RUN!!!!

You amaze me with everything you do. Of course, taping off the crown molding counts as cross-training you silly girl!!

Still debating Saturday. I have a baptism at 11:00, which I have to make some food for. So ... I'm not sure. Perhaps I will come early and get in a few miles before 7:00 so that I can get 15 miles in.

From JeffC on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 16:20:03

Great workout Smooth!! Tempo runs are tough and you really did a great job! Good luck with the remodeling, not my favorite chore in the world.

From Kathie on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 16:28:48

Oh smooth I think I would rather run another marathon in the rain before I taped a room for painting! I hate it so much and I can never do it right. Go ahead and count it as cross training for sure!

From Kelli on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 17:23:25

See---I knew she wanted more miles!

From DonGardinero on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 18:26:54

Smooth...Those are some great times on you run. Way to go. You amazing me with all that you do and you STILL get some good runs in.

Teena Babe!!!

PLEASE PLEASE come!!! You can start running earlier. Park your car at the designated meeting place. One option is to run south on the JRP towards Utah Lake end, turn around when you reach 3 miles (a round trip total of 6). Time it so you'll be back around 7:00ish to meet us on the trail and run north towards Thanksgiving Point for 4.5 more (that's 9 round trip, for a total of 15). I plan to run 14. We LOVE it if you can come.

What kinda food are you preparing for the baptism? Can I help?

THANKS Jeff, Kathie, Dale!!!

After the walls are painted. I get to tape the walls so we can paint the moldings, ceilings, doors and shelves. AARRGGHH!!!

From huans32 on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 21:24:16

Ya go run with them Teena. I will join another small group or run with Fly. I still need to join him up on the Bonneville Shore Trail. Now that he has recovered from SG

From Smooth on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 22:22:49

Hey Mark, did I not invite you to the FRB Post Halloween run at the JRP?

C'mon, you can trick Teena to a sub-7 and she'll get done in time for the baptism.

From huans32 on Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 06:45:32

Hmm I will have to see what I got going that morning still. As for who will trick who. Might have to just to get her to do just that. Even though it wouldnt take much. She is getting very fast.
