Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Plan was to run 11 miles with 6 @ tempo.  Got all geared up for the cold temp.(16F), but soon discovered that the road was not conducive for tempo run.  The fairly flat route was dotted with snow/icy stretches making for tough footings.  The city snow plows were in full force.  I was chased by 4 snow plows and two stupid barking mutts.

Half way into my run, I decided to do some hills.  It turned out to be a good choice.  The hills are all south-facing, thus were mostly clear of snow/ice.  The last 2.25 miles were all uphill with an elevation gain of 205'.  Other than the two As (arthritis and asthma), the run felt good.  I even concentrated on the running form I've been working on.

11 miles (whole bench loop plus the 12th W hill and 3rd W hill) in 1:45:51.  AP: 9:37

You are truly amazing!!! Great workout little lady, once again. And extra good job on outrunning the dogs and the snowplows!

From Rachel on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 15:21:26

Smooth, I am impressed. I did 11 today, but not nearly as fast! BBK had us working on hills as well and I KNOW my hill pace wouldn't average that out. You are such an inspiration! Keep up the awesome work!

From tarzan on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 15:28:05

Wow - awesome run. I am impressed that you stayed out there this long in the cold.

From Cal on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 15:44:35

11 miles, way nice! I wish I had your dedication.

From Kathie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 16:19:35

11 mile!

How many marathons are you doing this year? I have decided that I only like to train for one or two max.

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 16:20:16

I want to be you, tiny, fast and sweet! You are amazing!! Keep it up and blog forever because I am taking notes and someday I might try some of your crazy stuff, as for now, I am the blog sweeper!!!

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 16:39:37

Kelli,

I did NOT out run the snowplows. I had to cross the road to get out of their way. Those guys would not slow down for nothin'. I did outrun the dogs. If they ever bite me I will sue their owner.

Rachel,

I wish I lived close enough to run with you. Those BBKers sure are fast. I'm not worthy to be in that group even if I lived close to them.

Maurine,

The cold did not bother me as long as there's no wind. I wore the UnderArmour Sub-zero mock turtleneck. It keeps me pretty toasty.

Cal,

It takes me at least 3 miles to warm up; then after that it's just putting one foot in front of the other.

Kathie,

I'm trying to decide whether to run the Slam or not. If I do, that will be 6 again like last year. My husband calls me a Running Fool.

Leslie,

Thanks for the kind words. I don't know how many running years I get to have before this old body falls apart. But while I can, I just do the best I can without self-destruct. You are NOT a sweeper. Keep plugging along and enjoy what we do every day.

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 16:44:45

Okay Smooth, 4 for the Grand Slam, 1 Boston, and what is #6? I hear you, I told Harold I was doing the Grand Slam and he rolled his eyes, but I agree, how much longer can we do this?? I do love it and want to do as much as I can!

Is there a real 60 by 60 club? I looked online but didn't see anything.

From Corrine on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 16:47:20

nothing like being able to run down a hill with no snow or ice.

you are inspiring.

i am new here.

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 17:11:57

Leslie,

There are 5 marathons in the Grand Slam, 4 require, 1 optional. Last year was the same I ended up running all 5. So if things go well, that's the plan.

There is no official 60 by 60. I just thought it's a great goal for you. You have already run 16. It is totally doable for you. I have learned that as long as I don't try to RACE every one, I am okay. We still have to respect the 26.2; but I LOVE to run and it's the only thing I know how to do.

Corrine,

WELCOME to the blog. Going over to your blog now.

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 17:23:10

Thanks, I think I will stick with the 4 for the Grand Slam, I did not like TOU as much as the others. I am excited to try Utah Valley, thanks for that suggestion. I think we should start our own 60 by 60 club. YOu can be Pres. and I will be Vice Pres! People can sign up for $100 and we can split the money and go to Laie and sit on the beach and eat nachos and shaved ice! How bout it partner?

NOte: Do not buy Popchips, they are addicting!

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 17:40:50

Leslie, LOVE IT, We're gonna be rich!!! GOOD THINKING! I'll go to Laie anytime. Actually right now is when I WISH I could be there. OK, I'll stay away from the addicting Popchips.

Oh, I just realize TOU is two weeks from SGM. It was doable last year; but I wouldn't do it if I were to peak for SGM. OK! I'm SO excited to do Utah Valley. It'll be a nice long training run. Here's to 60 by 60. Harold and Larry are rolling their eyes right now. Speaking of which, when's Harold hitting the slope. Larry's gonna ski this Sat while I do my crazy 20 miler.

From tarzan on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 17:47:12

Do ultramarathons count towards our 60?

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 17:58:51

Smooth, Poor Harold has to do a tile job Sat. Lucky Larry! A 20 miler! I hope we have good weather, where are you running?

Maurine, since I am the offical Vice Pres. I say Yes, so that means I have 20 already and will have 25 by the end of the year!! How many have you got? Where are you running Sat? I have another free day with Harold working.

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 18:35:26

Maurine, Yes, Ultra counts more, at least double or quartriple. Yes, how many have you done? And you are much younger than the pres and vicepres, you should be the CEO for sure.

Leslie, I'm not sure where I'll run this Sat. If the weather is good, I'll run around AF, Highland and Alpine. I HATE running long solo. How many are you doing and Where are you and Maurine running?

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 19:00:32

Yes, I like that, Maurine could be the CEO!

I am not sure if Maurine and I are running together or not. I may still be in the dog house from our last run together. Actually I think we were talking about possibly doing the Porter Rockwell trail. I would like to do at least 14 or 15. You need to try that trail with us sometime.

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 19:09:37

You could come and join us for the Riverton half course, plus 1 mile back to the car!?!

From peej on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 20:33:31

Yes the river bottom was plowed, and there was only one small icey patch just north of Baangerter Highway. It really was a nice run. The two races I have chosen are the dam to dam, and the spectrum 10k. I have training issues I cant move or miss as I am training for the Coure de Alene ironman in June. I plan on running the SLC marathon as an aided training run, and then running the St. George marathon for time. Thanks for the note, Peej

From DonGardinero on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 20:59:24

So you're running Utah Valley? I wonder if I should still plan on running it since I already paid for it. If I DID run it, then I'd only need one more for the Slam....Hmmm. I might have to think about it some more.

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 22:17:12

Leslie,

The way Maurine is doing all those ultras and being as young as she is, I think she should be CEO of the 50 by 50 club (or 45 by 45). How young is she anyway?

Porter Rockwell trail??!! Is it paved, how long is it? Where and when are you gals meeting?

Kelli,

Are you talking to me or Leslie?

PEEJ,

Looks like you have good race schedule with solid training plan. May be I'll see you at Spectrum. Good luck on Coure de Alene ironman. WOW, you're awesome.

Dale,

IF I stay healthy after Boston and Ogden, I will run Utah Valley. This year's Slam races are spaced better than 2008. You have 4 weeks between Ogden and Utah Valley; then 6 weeks between Park City and SGM. It depends what your goals are. To me the key in running the Slam is not RACE them and pay special attention to recovery. I can't emphasis the importance of recovery. When the races are spaced less than 6 weeks apart, you have to treat the first one as a long aided training run so you can be fully recovered for the next race. Hope this makes sense.

From DonGardinero on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 22:20:52

That makes perfect sense, Smooth. It's still a tough decision because I want to do well at Ogden and especially St. George. I'll let you know what I decide.

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 22:39:55

Dale,

When I BQ in SGM 07, I did just that. I trained very well for Ogden, then use the Slam as training runs and peaked at SGM for the BQ. My time at Ogden was 4:16:xx. I shaved 13 min off at SGM. The Slam marathons in 2007 were Ogden (May) DesNews (July) Park City (Aug) and SGM. It was perfectly spaced. So the difference this year is Utah Valley in June. DesNews is a brutal course, really hammer your legs. I think Utah Valley will be a better course.

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 23:07:39

The Porter Rockwell trail begins in Draper and goes South, I am not sure how far it goes, hopefully we will find out SAt. We would love to see you there, but we would all have a different pace.

I am sure Kelli is talking to you, you are in the speedy Gonzales catagory!

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 23:08:56

I am almost positive Muarine is 47, just a youngster!

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 23:16:10

Leslie,

Draper is not too far from here. I'll have to check it out. I'd love to run one with you gals. Hey, I'm definitely NOT in the speedy Gonzales catagory. I AM in the old granny catagory though.

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 23:22:03

If you are interested in trying the Porter Rockwell Trail, we would love it! Let me know and I can give you instructions to the parking lot. It is at the bridge at South Mountain. We have seen some running clubs there and I just got a notice from the Desert Sharks(which I just joined) that they are doing a training run out there too, so I think it is getting to be a popular running place.

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 23:29:53

What bridge? Where is it? I am directionally challenged. What time are you meeting? I'd like to run the first few with you gals. Will you find out how long the trail goes? THANKS a bunch.

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 23:45:33

Okay, I will try and get decent directions tomorrow, but it is on 13th East, south of 12300 S. There is a bridge there, you go under the bridge and the parking lot is on the left. The trail goes north for a short distance and a long way to the south, I will see if I can find out how long it is and get back with you. What time do you want to meet? I am easy and Maurine is usually up for anything. I am going to look online and see if I can find out how far it goes to the south. That would be so fun, maybe we could try and get Kelli and her group to come out!!!

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 23:51:31

GREAT! I'm good when Mr. Sun comes up. I'm not used to running in the dark. So, perhaps 7:30 or 8? But I'm willing to come early too. Running with a group beats running alone anytime. Thanks for looking it up. I'm going to bed now. Talk to you tomorrow.

From leslie on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 23:56:03

7:30 or 8:00 is good. I think we should meet at the Alberstons on 12300 S. and 13th East. and then we can run the full length of the trail. I read online that it goes to 14500 S. but I think they have added more trail since then, so we can explore.

I will talk to you tomorrow, you should see if Wendy can come too.

From rinny on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 10:09:03

what y'all didn't invite me to join you? :) man y'all are my inspiration, and thanks for the encouragement.

From leslie on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 11:02:49

Rinny!!! Please join us!!! A sister of Marions is a friend indeed!! We seem to be gathering a bit of interest, all levels of running are welcome, any distance is fine, we will all enjoy the trail together and high-5 each other as we go by!!!! No pressure, come do your own thing!!!! I will get more specific details out soon, but it looks like we will meet at Alberstons on 12300 S. and 1300E. The trail head is acouple blocks away. How about we meet at 7:45?

From Teena on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 11:08:49

Smooth,

Just a quick I LOVE YOU!!

Nice hillwork!!

(what is your mileage going to be this week? you're such a diehard!!)

From rinny on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 11:40:46

I wish I could join you, still have three little ones at home, and no jog stroller....but if we schedule it right are you talking 7:45 night or morning? i might be able to get hub to watch kids, since he is job less....anyone know anyone hiring project managers???

From leslie on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 11:45:14

rinny, check my blog for more details, it is 7:45am, keep your hubby up late friday night and sneak out before he wakes up, put the Cheerios out on the counter and have the cartoons on!!!!

From Smooth on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 12:09:01

Thanks Leslie, I think I will invite Wendy. One little glitch I have is my son has violin lesson in Orem. I have to see what time I need to be home. Since I'm doing 20, I might have to start earlier. I'll let you know.

Yes Rinny, please join us. I LOVE Leslie's suggestions. Good thinking Les, especially the Cheerios part. She's one SMART granny.

Teena,

I LOVE YOU too. It will be my highest if I can pull it off, 55. I actually did 54.5 last week. CRAZY!

From Marion on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 13:02:57

HOLY AMAZING RUN!!! I missed out on all this chat yesterday. You are a dog-plow dodging QUEEN!! Way to go!

From Kelli on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 13:18:18

I am talking to both of you!!!!

From Smooth on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 13:26:19

Marion,

Yeah, where were you?

Kelli,

So are you and your group coming to run the Porter R. trail? I will do the Riverton 1/2 course when I know how to get there. Remember I get lost running a simple 5K on the JRP.

From rinny on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 13:48:10

i am so confused! y'all lost me at you should join us...where when what???

From Smooth on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 13:56:51

Rinny,

We are meeting at :

Where: the Albertson's parking lot on 12300 South in Draper. Take the 123rd S exit, go east to about 1300 E, Albertson is on the right.

When: On Sat. morning. Right now we're talking 7:45 am.

What: A fun group run. I understand it's an out and back run. So you can run however much you want. I think Marion is doing 8. Leslie and Maurine are doing 14. I might try 20 depending on how long the trail is and how much time I have.

We would love it if you can join us.

From rinny on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 20:51:21

so what is an out and back run?

and when you say you are doing 20 you mean miles???

if marion picks me up :)

so when you say i can come and enjoy some alone time you mean it :)

From Smooth on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 22:56:51

Out and back means we start and end at the same location. So you just run out to where you want to turn around for the desired distance. I heard that the Rockwell trail has marker every 1/4 mile.

Yes, my schedule calls for a 20 miler this Sat. It will be the first of my three 20 milers for my marathon training.

That would be sweet if Marion can pick you up.

It all depends how ALONE you want to be. :) I have the feeling that you will have mighty fine company.

From Bec on Thu, Jan 29, 2009 at 11:31:30

From the looks of this blog Smooth, you are one popular woman. Good luck with your 20 miler this week. First of three? Didn't you run one last week? I would have counted that one toward the three. You are one crazy lady. Love you!

Thanks for the treadmill workout, I will be using that. This weekend I will be hitting some big hills in Vernal.

Reading your blog makes me want to run. Or just run more.

From Smooth on Thu, Jan 29, 2009 at 21:49:17

Becca

Last Sat's run was supposed to be 18; but I inadvertently ran a little too much. So I'm not gonna count that. CRAZY Me!

Yes, keep running and make it fun!!!

From Bec on Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 10:33:51

Smooth,

Thank you for the recommendation for the fast abs, I will consider using that. Have you read the book "Chi Running"? It's a fabulous book that I suggest to any runner. It talks a great deal about running form.

Happy running.

From Smooth on Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 15:33:09

Bec,

I've heard of "Chi Running" but have never read it. Larry said I "shuffle" with "doggie paws". So may be I should read the book and alter my running form??!!
