Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Schedule calls for VO2max workout: 8 mi w/ 5 x 600 m @ 5K race pace, jog 90 sec between.  I didn't program the Garmin to meters.  I simply ran half mile intervals.  Ran 2 miles to warm up.  I could feel the "hang-over" from Saturday's long run.  The mind was willing but the body was sluggish.  I had also gained 4 lbs. which is probably 90% water 10% cellular damage repair stuff.

I did 5 intervals at AP of 7:55.  I jogged for 90 sec in between.  The 3rd interval was run on a very very slight up elevation.  I wheezed badly on that one and I think the pace was 7:59.  The recovery in between the last 2 intervals was a fast walk.   Finished the run with 3 miles at slightly slower than marathon pace with the last mile at 8:47.

This was a hard workout.  I think I should have given myself another easy day.  But I had to take it when the weather is good, cloudy with T at 38F.  I also should have worn shorts. The tights and gloves made it a bit warm.

Five of us friends drove to Magna to pick up our 81 year old former neighbor to celebrate her birthday.  We had a fun time visiting and renewing friendships in a tiny little Mexican restaurant.  The older I get, the more I treasure these memories and traditions we share as friends.

Great work today Smooth! Both on your run and in the kindness you always seem to show to everyone, even an old former neighbor. You are an amazing example of the ability to work in both time for yourself (running) and even more time doing for others. Thanks.

From Kathie on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 17:38:05

Ditto what Rhett said. I find it very hard to say I am too busy when I have such a great example showing me that I am not!

From DonGardinero on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 17:47:34

AWESOME, Smooth!!! What a great girl you are. You are a very, very good example. Hey, I used to live in Magna before we moved up here. It's very quiet out there.

From huans32 on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 19:12:11

Let me guess you went to El Habernaros or something like that?? Great job on that workout. And you have push-ups still left to do tonight??

From Smooth on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 19:21:20

Marion,

It's gonna get easier, I hope. I want to build the 800s to 10x's nine days out from Boston.

Rhett,

If I don't have a race to train for, I'd be spending all my time visiting. I'm lucky to be blessed with good people in my life.

Kathie,

Thanks for the compliment. I'm sure you do a lot and just not telling.

Dale,

Magna is a quiet little town, seem so far away. I'm glad Ruth moved there to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. She's an amazing lady.

Mark,

YEP, that's the restaurant with very colorful booths. The "OPEN" sign has 4 Chinese characters meaning "welcome". My friends thought that was strange. The food was pretty good, service was fast.

Push ups tonight should be fun!

Smooth, great workout girl! I only did 4 easy today, you are so strong. I love girl's lunches! Right now for me they're at places like McDonalds to let the kids play, but before I know it we'll be out at the local mexican dive (they always have the best food)!

Great Job on Speedwork, even though your body didn't feel especially speedy. Sometimes the mind just has to take over and rule over our body huh? You are working incredibly hard, WOW! I'm always impressed, and have to admit that when I need a little motivation I look at 'your' blog! Thanks for the comments too, I hope you do the Grand Slam this year again! My husband asked me if anyone else is doing it that I know and I told him 'nope' just doing it solo. It would be fun to know someone else as crazy is out there! I'm excited to see how Boston is for you, you will Rock! BTW, your Mexican lunch sounds so yummy, those quaint little restaurants usually have the BEST food. Thanks again for the inspiration, today is also my speedwork day and I always dread it a little, until it's over then I'm so stinkin proud that I did it! Have a great day!

You rock young lady in your running and your life. I want to be YOU!!!

It feels like Spring out right now, it will make you go even faster! :)

From Smooth on Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 15:42:03 from 71.36.64.119

Rachel,

I should have done easy miles. It's killing me now. O well, I need to listen to my body better.

Teena,

This training seems to go on forever. 24 weeks is too long for me. I do need to get some more sleep. Menopause and insomnia stinks.

Kelli,

Thanks for saying I'm getting fast. I don't feel it though. It's okay I don't need to get any faster, just stay the same speed and get older.

Amber,

Your workouts amaze me. I don't know how you get them all done with everything else you do. You're gonna enjoy running the Grand Slam. It's a very satisfying accomplishment.

Leslie,

You're so FUN! I sure miss you. We need to keep each other going, don't we?
