Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

THANK YOU SO SO SO SO MUCH, KELLI & SCOTT, and RACHEL!!! I LOVE YOU!  WHAT AWESOME GROUP RUN!!!!

My legs were sore all Fri. evening.  I would have tried to de-sore by doing more cleaning; but I was too tired plus I didn't want to look like death warmed over when hubby got home.   Date night started late so did bed time.  I got a total of 4 hours sleep.

Got to the trail at 7:32.  I'm always amazed that Kelli and Co. don't carry fluids or fuel with them.  I always do but then sometimes would forget to take them.  Today was the case as I was chatting away with Kelli and Rachel.  They are the BEST running partners.  They took it slow to stay with me.

The first couple miles had a few icy patches.  I screamed every time I slipped.  Hope I didn't annoy K & R too much.  My paces came in at 9:30, 9:16, 9:07.  So far so good.  When we got to the bridge, I really wanted to turn around.  Scott and James had charged  up the hills like a walk in the park.  Rachel bravely lead our pack of trio.  Jon had started his run earlier before 7:30 and was running with Kelly and her friends.  He caught up to us.  Once we crossed the bridge and navigated around some slippery slopes, I was too chicken to go further.  We decided to turn around.  Jon lend his hand to steady me.  THANKS, Jon.  I forgot to stop the Garmin and this mile came in at 10:59.

Wow, we got back to the car before I even noticed.  We ran those 3 miles in 8:42, 8:47, 8:58.  PERFECT!!!  Sweet Kelli got some muffins out for Jon and the three ladies as they were finished.  I shed my jacket and realized I hadn't drank anything.  I drank the 1st gatorade and replaced another one to my fuel belt.

We headed on the southern portion of the trail for 9 more.  I could feel my calves tightened.  I guess they do that after stopping.  So when Kelli and Rachel made a pit stop I kept on going at a slightly slower pace.  Mile 8-11 splits came in at 8:46, 9:14, 9:01, 8:52.

I sure was glad Rachel was keeping track of the mileage and notified us when to turn around 'cause I would have just kept going.  I can't do math on the run to save my life.  Around mile 13 Rachel said she was feeling fatigued.  The light bulb went on, we hadn't taken any fluid.  I drank one flask while she drank the other.  Thanks to Kelli who kept us at a steady pace; otherwise I'm sure I would have gotten lazy.  Mile 12-16 splits: 8:54, 9:05, 9:02, 9:01, 8:55.  When the finish line was in sight, Kelli and Rachel sprinted.  It was awesome to see how much gas they had left in them legs.  This li'olady wasn't about to chase after them.  Once again, Kelli and Scott presented us with these yummy muffins at the finish.  THANK YOU!  I had to rush off to take my son to violin.

My goal was to run 12 of today's 16 at marathon pace.  I came pretty close, thanks to Kelli and Rachel!!!  Very pleased with today's workout.  Took a cold water bath.  Will see if it really speeds recovery.  Other than the shoes got wet and dirty, and a few scary slipperies, everything was perfect today.

That sounded like so much fun!!! ( that didn't sound right, sounded??? maybe Burt and correct my English for me) Thanks for all the little details, I felt like I was right there beside you guys!!! I am glad you had such a great run!

Maurine and I are signing up for the Grand Slam this week. I think, I am officially in the "crazy club" and loving it!!! I am really really excited about this years challange!!

Keep it up girl, there are so many of us on the blog looking up to you!! You always slip in great little tips and bits of wisdom and encouragement! THANK-YOU!!!

What a GReat run! I love reading your race reports. You guys had SO much fun. Your eats sound really great! I am not hungry and will probably skip dinner tonight. I really hate that about hard runs. I have no desire to eat for about 12 hours. I need to go with that, I suppose :)

You have got to try to salt tabs and see if they help your calves.

From Kelli on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 19:34:13

Thanks SMOOTH for running with me and talking to me and keeping me entertained! I am so glad none of us fell on our tushes on the ice rink, and even more glad that this route has porta potties for me and my tiny bladder. Thanks for slowing down to wait for me!!

I LOVE RUNNING WITH YOU and CAN NOT WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN!

From Smooth on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 19:46:26

Leslie,

Yes, it was FUN. I'm excited you're doing the Slam. Funny you say "looking up". With my shortie statue I am ALWAYS looking up to ALL of you in more ways than one. :)

Marion,

We were thinking about you and Maurine at the 5K. If I didn't have violin, I would have tried to make it to Provo to see you. You did AWESOME today.

I had felt nauseated after races before. I find that it's helpful if I take quick carb in fluid forms like chocolate milk or slim fast immediately after the race helps with eating later. Eating smaller meals every 2 hours also help.

Kelli,

THANKS for running with ME! I feel so very blessed to have met you. I LOVE running with you. You made me feel fast and comfortable and I can totally feel your positive attitude and sincere love. YES, please let's do it again. LOVE YOU!!!

From Rachel on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 22:29:33

Smooth you are an angel! Especially today when I really needed that fuel - I had a really bad running morning and wanted it to be so good, I'm kinda bummed my body didn't cooperate with my mind! I feel great now and am so glad I had you and Kelli to keep me going or I would've cheated and/or stopped I think! My gut is still giving me fits, but Sunday is the last pill YEA! Hopefully it will all be gone by Myrtle. I'll just remember all the great tips and inspiration you gave me today - you are one amazing woman! I still think you should write a book, you'd be able to more than support a good running habit for YEARS to come. Get some sleep and I hope to see you again soon! Run on lady, you inspire us all!!!!

From Michelle N. on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 22:33:30

Way to go Smooth! One of these days I'll get myself down to run the trail with you guys. Today was just a little too late for me to start, but next time I'm there! Great job.

Great Job on your long run! You seem like the most AMAZING woman!!!! Seriously, , , everyone just loves you! I wish I could come run with you and your group!!!! You really should write a book, , , , I'm so glad I've met you through this blog, I've for sure benefited from it, thanks for all the tips and the push-up challenge etc. I left another comment on my blog, but the Ultra-marathon we are doing is in St.George April 18, same weekend as Boston. Good Luck to you at Boston, I'm way jealous, I've gone twice and since I'm still nursing my baby, I'm gonna wait till next year to go again. THanks again for being a glowing INSPIRATION to us fellow bloggers!

Maurine,

THANKS. We were thinking about you racing your 5K. You did awesome. I'm amazed at how much you do. You're super woman.

Teena,

We missed you. I'm glad you were able to run. You think Lowell will DISAPPROVE of my mileage? I seriously don't know how he does it. I just follow the book. Wish I could hire a personal coach. Oh, I slept in Sunday morning. LOVE YOU! Hope Dr. T. has some good answers for you.

Kathie,

THANKS. I hope you're right. Can I hold you to it?

Rachel,

So much of running is mental. You are a much better and faster runner than you realize. Seriously, you did awesome. You will shine in Myrtle. I hope the typhoid pill effects wear off in a day or so.

Michelle,

It will be a pleasure to meet you even though I wouldn't be able to keep your fast pace. You are going to Boston, yeah?

Jon,

It was a fun run and even better with you and Kelly there. I kept thinking about Kelly's slip on the ice last week. Hope she's all better.

Dale,

You did awesome on your night run after a great performance on your 5K race.

Kristel,

It was a blessing to have met all these wonderful bloggers. Kelli is godsend.

Amber,

I am so impressed with your running accomplishments. Good luck on your ultra in St. George. Your training is looking awesome.

Wow, I have a thing or two to learn from you. After all you've been to Boston twice. I can't write...just yack a lot. ;)
