Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Thought I give the 6 miler progressive run another try today.  Went to bed way late with teenage discussions (ok heated debate over football priority).  Anyway I woke up with arthritis pain, that can only mean one thing, the mercury outside must have dipped in the low 30's.

First mile warm up took a lot slower than I wanted, 10:30, wondered if the cold's going to bring on the asthma.  Mile two was done in 9:40.  At mile 2.5 I saw Mary running towards me.  Mary is Wendy's soccer-mom-friend.  She used to coach my son's Jr. Jazz.  Anyway I have been trying to get her to train for a marathon.  She is running, woohoo!  She asked if she could join me.  Of course!  She has a million questions about marathoning and on juggling a busy life.  It was good therapy for us.  Mile 3 was 8:57Mile 4 did not go faster, as Mary was slowing and had to stop to adjust her shoe laces, split was 9:02Mile 5 was 8:55Mile 6 was done in 8:44.  Not bad for carrying on a conversation the whole time, and I could even think straight, and hadn't had breakfast yet.

At mile 6, I told Mary I'm going to kick it in for the last 0.2 mile.  It's supposed to help me learn to finish strong.  Wow, she followed.  Garmin showed we did that in a 7:05 pace.  Finished that 10K run in 55:55.  Not my fastest...but I love that number, 5555 - I'm ALIVE!!!

We stopped right in front of Wendy's house.  Wouldn't you know it, Wendy was just coming out to run her 3 miler.  So, what did we do,  we ran together till Mary got to her car and I continued on with Wendy at our usual 10 min. pace for another 2.75 mile.  I love that I could be flexible with my training right now.

Wow Smooth!! That is some awesome mileage and awesome splits. Nice progressive run. Love it!!

Okay, so Mark said you are going to be in SLC Saturday morning. Any chance you will come and run with the Chumps? We are meeting at 6:00 a.m.

And yes ... I think the new Kathie is our Kathie!! :)

Teena,

I'll be at the Grand America overnight Fri and Sat. Have never run in SLC before. I'm not familiar with the JRP trail or how to get there. I love to join the Chumps.

I run REALLY SLOW, nowhere near the Chumpsters' pace. Please don't feel like you have to accomodate me. Let me check w/ Larry's schedule and I'll get back with ya.

That's who I thought, Kathie, the yoga diva.

I'm going to your blog now, I want to know what you did this afternoon.

I would be happy to run whatever pace you want to run. Perhaps Mark could pick you up on his way here. :)

Wow, great run! Good job getting another runner converted to marathons. Good for you for adding on miles at the end. Thats hard for me to do.

From Smooth on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 22:46:28

Teena,

The ever so kind and nice Mark did offer to pick me up. I just need to run it by Larry. We're supposed to play hosts for this weekend's event.

You don't need to run my slow pace. I'm thinking I'll probably do 10-12 miles; while you Chumpers do 14-16. So we may start and finish about the same time anyway. A new route and meeting new friends are just the motivation I need to get up early.

Jon,

Thanks for your kind words. The add-ons were slow miles...and it was hard for me too.

Ya Smooth just let me know what you would like to do. I would still recommend doing Liberty park. As I ramp up my running I will have to go down there for sure. Boy is it lite up at 6am I am sure that it is at 3:30-4. So I can swing down there and run. I love in the Southeast corner the spring that never shuts off. And its the perfect water stop. So dont worry about your water if you go. Just bring GUs or what not k.

From Smooth on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:16:18

Thanks Mark. Liberty Park sounds like a good option. JRP is a drive, plus meeting at 6 am is the real kicker. I'll pm you on that. What are you leaning towards?
