Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Today's run was to be a "rehearsal run" for Boston.  Carb loaded and hydrated as planned yesterday.  With the time difference of 2 hours, I started my run at the same time I'd start the race in Hopkinton.

I ran the "Boston similator" route that I ran a month ago except I added a big hill at mile 13 and extra 2 miles at the end to make it a 23 miler.  I wanted to keep my average pace at marathon pace + 45 seconds.

Starting temp was mid 40's, partly sunny.  Wore s/s shirts, shorts and sunglasses.  Pre-run weight was 99.  Ate breakfast of yogurt, banana and gatorade.

The first 10K was a gradual downhill to the AF River.  Drank 1st flask gatorade at mile 7 before running up Temple Hill.  Kept my pace steady on the uphill.  The next 10K was a gradual incline up through Highland to Alpine.  Passed a few runners who were also doing their long runs on this stretch.

Took 1 Gu at mile 10.  Drank 2nd gatorade while running up the Alpine mountain before mile 13.  It took 2:04 to run the half.  I was wondering how Teena, Lowell, Kelly and Scott were doing at Moab.  Took 2nd Gu at mile 17.5 while running up the two hills that I dubbed "Heartbreak Hills".  Legs felt good enough to run the next two gradual downhill at marathon pace.  Drank 3rd gatorade at mile 19 waiting for traffic light.  There was a strong headwind coming from the south.  The last two miles were tough, I could not pick up the pace.  I was getting pretty thirsty.

Drank 12 oz gatorade and 8 oz water as soon as I got home.  Took an ice bath while sipping a warm cup of protein chocolate shake.  Post run weight was 97.  Ate a meal of halibut, asparagus spears and rice an hour later.  Felt tired, went to see "Marley & Me" with hubby and mother-in-law who cooked us a nice dinner.

23 miles in 3:45:09.  AP: 9:47

When I qualify for Boston you are going to have to show me your route. Are you feeling ready for the race? Are you pleased overall with your training plans this year?

You are going to do so awesome. You have put a lot of heart, soul and effort into your workouts.

p.s. - I would love to post a pre workout or post workout weight below 100 (or even below 110, 120, 130 and 140)

Fantastic simulation. I'm really impressed with how methodical you are about this. You and Carolyn are true inspirations on how to run a marathon.

Smooth, you are amazing!!! That is an awesome run you had, I can not believe how hard you work both before and during your runs! You do put so much time and thought into what you are doing, we can all learn from you! I need to start paying better attention!!!!

We need to make some PARTY plans for the Riverton Half next week! Every race needs a post race party, right???

Thanks for all of your encouragement! I appreciate it so much!

Smooth, sounds like a great simulation for Boston. I hope the weather is in the upper 40s, but I'll pass on that strong head wind part. Do you usually only take 2 GUs during the race? Based off your weight change of only 2 pounds, sounds like you have your hydration down pat. I'm not up for math right now. Did you keep your pace at 45 secs slower than mp? I think you are ready for a great Boston. I'm excited to see you there.

Smooth, you never cease to amaze me. Great dress rehearsal. Awesome run! (no cramping..sweeet!) I might just have to try simulate Boston on next weekend's last long run before taper. Thanks for the excellent idea. 28 days!!!!

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 22:59:37 from 71.36.65.79

THANKS everyone for your kind words and encouragement.

Rhett,

It depends on how long I'm on the course. I average about 4 GUs. My BQ mp is 9:05. I tried to keep my long run pace under 10. I was shooting to run the last 3 miles at mp but the darn headwind made it tough.

Smooth-

Yeah!! Great Run, , , your really are amazing and now you can go to Boston with confidence!!!! except for the head-wind it sounds like you had a great day, I don't think there's anything worse than WIND! unless of course it's at your back, then it's a little gift to you. Hope your recovery is good, are you doing another long run before Boston?

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 23:55:41 from 71.36.65.79

I've done two 20, one 21 and one 23. I was going to run another 20 next Sat. but decided to run a 1/2 marathon instead. So, the longest I will run is a 16 or 17 miler and hopefully dial in some marathon pace miles.

Recovery gets easier after each long run. You'll find that when you run the Slam, the recovery gets shorter.

Hey Mom,

Jeff told me about your website. It was great to visit him in Chicago. I can't believe how many friends you have on here! I'm glad your run went well on Sat.

Smooth,

Great run! You are ready for Boston. Sounds like you have a great mapped out course around the valley. I wish I could have ran with you, pretty lonely on the streets up here.

I will probably see you this Saturday.

4 weeks! 4 weeks! 4 weeks!

Smooth- that was one heck of a cool run! You are SO super cool!!!

How do you watch a movie after a long run? We are major movie people, but I really hate watching them after long runs now. Dinner sounds so nice. I like your post race meal. I need to plan those better :) I learn so much from reading your blog :D

From RAD on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 14:52:18 from 67.166.99.8

Awesome run smooth! I thought you were only doing 20!?! You are kickin it big time and will do SO great at Boston I'm already getting excited to hear your report :)
