Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Tossed and turned again all night with backaches.  The breathing is better, no coughing; but this new backache is puzzling to me.  It hurts to sit, walk, or lying flat.  No running today, too much to do.

I took Rhett's advise and did 18 min. of AM yoga even though it was getting late.  The stretching felt so good for my glute and my back.  I think that's what I needed.

Ouch Smooth, Back pain is never good. I hope it gets better soon. Do some of your magic Yoga or something.

From Rachel on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 14:23:23

Smooth,

I had horrible back pain early last year, it was lower back for me and my PT finally sent me to a pilaties trainer at TOSH and wow! Improving my core strength and understanding it all made all the difference. Good luck with the pain, those backs can take a while! Have a great day off.

-hopefully you remember me, we ran in Lehi together before it was freezing, Kelli invited me to the group and I'm now blogging. I had such a great time with you at the Lehi run, that I keep looking for you to come again soon!

Sorry with the change of plans. Kind of decided this morning to go for the 5k instead. Then later after talking to day and him being so excited. Found out that he was going to pull out of it. I am sure he isnt going to be doing that now.:) But I will be at the finish line for sure cheering you in. You will do great just rest up and see you down there.

Smooth I hope your back gets better... it seems like we are all a bunch of walking wounded (physically or mentally in my case) Maybe there is something to this taper madness rumor!

From leslie on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 18:32:57

Oh dear! I do hope you are okay. Try some Tiger Balm and get your hubby to massage you! I am thinking about you and wishing you better! Hopefully with a good nights rest you will be good to go. Maybe you will just have to have a very slow race, you could hang with me in the back! Good luck dear.

Smooth....How are you tonight? You gonna be ok to run the race with that sore back? Goodness, what is going on with everyone? It's usually me that doesn't feel good before a race, now it's everyone else. Get better.

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 19:37:04

Dang it, get better FAST!!! What is the deal??? Excited to see you tomorrow, if you can sit in a car that long.

From Smooth on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 23:21:02

Rhett,

Was busy all day with meetings, errands, etc. May be I'll do the yoga before going to bed. Good idea. How's your test run. I'm going over to your blog to find out.

Rachel!!!

Of course I remember you. You were awesome running partner and a GREAT RUNNER! How's Lucy?

Thanks for the tips on pilates. What is TOSH? It sounds familiar. I tried pilates once. It's HARD! But I can see how it totally helps with the core strengthening. The back feels ok or less pain if I hunch over like an old lady. I don't think I can run like that tho.

Mark,

I totally understand. It's the smart thing to do. I'm glad you got it all straightened out. You will do great and remember to have fun. Hope your dad changes his mind and run it after all.

Kathie,

Do you think it's taper madness? I've never had back pain like that before. It started yesterday morning. I hadn't tried anything to make it go away other than I hadn't run at all and it's still there.

Leslie,

I do have Tiger Balm somewhere in the house. It's so old; probably all evaporated. Massage from hubby sounds very soothing. Except he's never home.

Dale,

I'm still going to run; but it might be painfully slow.

Kelli,

I don't look forward to the car ride. The only comfortable position is to round my back. The pain is in the spinal region, in the middle from L1 all the way to L5. I had to sleep all curled up like a ball, but then I couldn't breath very well.

Smooth --

Have you tried the ThermaCare patches on your back? Ry loves them. Is it your lower back? Whenever I have back pain I repeatingly do "upward dog" followed by the "child's play position." It seems to stretch it out nicely. I'll bet Kathie could tell you some really good yoga poses to help. I'm not even sure if those are the actual names that I used, but I think that is what Rodney Yee calls them.

I'm sorry you are not feeling 100%.

I love you. Please take care of yourself.
