Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

What a BEAUTIFUL sunny day!  Marching forward on the day after March 4th!!! :)

So very very very very kind of Wendy and Carolyn to keep me company on my first day back to running on the road.  It was like I had to learn how to run all over again.  It's been 23 days since the stress fracture.  Although the right foot is pain free,  I have definitely lost quite a bit fitness and muscle tone on the right calf.  I have gained some weight as well.  However I kinda like the look of the skinnier right calf compare to the left *man calf* as Steam8 would call it. :)

We walked one mile to Karen's house to see if she'd join us since she didn't answer the text..., she wasn't home.  We proceeded with my Day 1 of *Pete Pfitzinger's Return to Running after Stress Fracture* program.  We'd run 5 min. walk 5 min. run 5 min. walk 5 min. run 5 min. etc.  I didn't have any watch on.  Wendy kept track of the min with her Garmin.  When we reached the west end of Bull River, we turned and headed back continued with the run/walk 5 min.  We covered 4.5 miles in about an hour.  Wendy said the average pace was 13 something!  Not bad at all!  I feel so blessed!!! :)

Glad to see you back at it. You don't need to be reminded but make sure you don't over do it.

From Bec on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 12:08:35 from 68.206.133.141

Positive, positive, positive Smooth. It doesn't surprise me one bit that you have a program that involves returning to running after a stress fracture. Dang, that book/program would have been helpful to me and others in the past.

Good girl marching forward.

LOVE it! See that? Spectrum will be MORE than just a literal walk in the park for you :) What awesome friends you have!

From Teena Marie on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 13:26:17 from 155.100.166.108

I am so thrilled that you are feeling happy. :)

I will echo what Andy said, just be careful. :)

Also, how did the biceps femoris feel?

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 13:43:36 from 174.27.219.252

Andy ~ I DO need to be reminded! THANKS! :)

Bec ~ I seriously don't know how/where to start back up. Am grateful for the supportive friends and help of Pfitz program.

SSF ~ :) Keep reminding me that it's okay to go slow and see the big picture!

The biceps femoris is feeling better...just some tightness. Sitting seems to aggravate it. I also find it weird that my patella tendon or the tibial tuberosity is hurting more with no running...strange!

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 13:56:58 from 174.27.219.252

Bec ~ Pete Pfitzinger has a host of programs such as 8 weeks of water running to stay in shape while injured and the return to running after injury. You can check them out here, http://pfitzinger.com/labreport.shtml

From Toby on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 14:17:00 from 199.101.229.254

YES!!!! I used that program when I was "coming back". Along with Rachel's walk 9 minutes - run 1 minute (for a total of 50 minutes). Way to go Smooth! Hopefully you got a good *runner's high* from today's workout!!!

From Kathie on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 16:45:46 from 97.126.216.199

Hey Smooth I am going to be at spectrum too! I would love to run with you, but you may be faster than me even with your bad foot! Miss you so much, what are your plans for dinner that Friday night? Maybe you and Larry could have a double date with James and I!

From timp on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 19:02:42 from 99.110.188.230

great to see you able to get back at it, Smooth!

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 19:20:20 from 174.27.219.252

hi Kathie ~ So happy to hear from you! I am so excited that you are running Spectrum! I highly doubt that I would be faster than you! I am starting from ground zero!

Larry is not going down with me. He has to speak at our Stake R.S. Conference Sat. morning. I am hitching a ride with John, Wendy and Carolyn. We'd love to have a "triple date" dinner with you! Let's stay in touch!

Tim ~ hope you will soon get back too! Keep up with the cross training!

It sounds like you are being very smart about your training. I'm glad you are back doing some running outside.

From DaleG on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 23:00:13 from 152.216.7.5

Nice job, Smoothie. I'm glad you took it slow.

From Steam8 on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 23:11:49 from 166.70.55.77

So glad you are able to get back at it!! That extra baggage will come right off of you....I can't imagine you with a man calf! ha! That made me laugh! Yeehooo! I am so excited for you!!

From Bec on Tue, Mar 06, 2012 at 07:19:54 from 68.206.133.141

thanks for the website Smooth. I will go check it out.

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Mar 06, 2012 at 08:04:37 from 152.26.59.252

Your return plan sounds like a smart one to me! I'm happy for you being back in the running shoes- and how great that you had a beautiful spring day to greet you on your run.

I think man-calves are awesome on women! It's a subtle way of telling people- "I'm tough!"

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 06, 2012 at 12:56:20 from 174.27.219.252

allie, Maynard, Dale, Nancy ~ it felt SO GOOD to just go through the motion of putting on the running clothes and shoes and head OUT! Thanks for your enthusiasm!

Steam8 ~ I've always had HUGE calves, my left one is more manly than the right which got a little atrophied from wearing the boot. Yep, I'm lopsided! :)

QP ~ It was a beautiful day...sure made the coming back more inviting. Man-calves definitely have a psychological edge to it...however I'm about a ONE on the "tough meter" at the moment! :)
