Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

The left middle toe and tibial tendon are feeling much better...no icing, just rest and light message over the weekend.  The left arch has a sore spot where I've been told by the podiatrist that I have an extra bone.  I think the toe and arch pain is from my wearing crocs to run on Friday.  The tendon was probably irritated from the way I tied my shoes to keep the shoe-heels snug around the ankles.  I'm wondering if I should try wearing neutral shoes sometimes.

This morning I didn't feel like doing any speed work even though schedule calls for a VO2 max workout (8 mi w/ 5x600m @ 5K race pace).   A storm is supposed to be coming...so got out to do the best with today's 8 miler.  After couple miles of warm up,  I decided to make it a tempo run and was pleasantly surprised by how good I felt through out the run under an overcast sky.  8 miles in 1:09:55.  AP: 8:44.  Splits:  9:56, 9:02, 8:35, 8:38, 8:35, 8:26, 8:26, 8:13.

Will ice the left foot today.  Will do push up challenge of week 6 later.

Have a GREAT WEEK everyone!!!

I envy your good health right now! Way to beat the storm and I am glad the feet are still runnable!

Dang, Boston is right around the corner, keep that body together for just a little longer and you will be on your way to a great race. What are you doing running in Crocs? Are those the bare foot running things? Tell me more!

From Bec on Mon, Mar 09, 2009 at 17:31:34 from 205.123.38.62

Smooth,

Nice run on Saturday. I just have to tell you...6 more weeks!!! I don't know if I will make it.

From Rhett on Mon, Mar 09, 2009 at 17:40:13 from 170.215.58.122

Another storm???? Boy the weather gods sure are trying to make it tough for you to train for Boston. Great run. Glad to hear the foot is feeling better. I switched for stability shoes to neutral shoes a couple years ago. I love them.

Great times and distances Smooth! Aren't you glad you beat the weather?!? I'm really happy I ran at 5 this morning.

From MarcE on Mon, Mar 09, 2009 at 22:35:10 from 206.225.68.10

Great splits, Smooth. Those are some speedy miles.

Wow, Smooth, you were really flying today. Great job.

Now the top of my right foot is hurting from having my shoe tied too tight on my 17 miler. I better loosen it up for the next run.

From huans32 on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 08:54:23 from 138.64.2.78

Mind if I throw a rope around you at the race this weekend. I have been struggling with the idea that Teena might beat me in a race. Now I am starting to worry about you.:) Look at those speedy splits. Reports are saying the weather is going to be great down there this weekend.:)

From Amber on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 09:04:07 from 64.255.88.143

Great run Smooth, it's always nice to feel better on the run then you expected! Hope you have a great week! You're amazing. What race are you doing this weekend?

From Amber on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 09:07:21 from 64.255.88.143

So I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, , ,I just noticed on your sidebar that the race you are doing is the Spectrum! Yeah! Coming down to the sunny weather, well, it's supposed to be nice weather this weekend anyway . . . I'm doing the race as well. . . I'll have to look for you! Do you have a big group coming down? It'll be fun to meet you!!!! Are you taking Thurs and Fri off running? I'm thinking about it!

From huans32 on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 11:47:05 from 138.64.2.78

Leslie,

So sorry you're not feeling well. May be the extra rest will do you good and ready to pace Maurine at the Buffalo Run.

Jeff,

Yep, gotta hang it there for 5+ weeks. My left tibial tendon started bothering me last week after the 11 miler on Wed. Took Thu off. On Fri. I was trying to keep the tendon happy. As long as it was not pressed or rubbed by the shoe tongue, it was fine. So, I thought about running bare-foot; that didn't pan out. So I ran in Crocs which created other problems with the toes and arch. Can't win!

Bec,

Yes, you will make it. I know you're so excited to go to Boston. Here's something to keep your mind off training: get on the Adidas website and check out their official Boston race outfit. You might want to stimulate the economy a bit. :)

Rhett,

These late winter early spring storms come and go pretty quickly. I'm thinking that my feet are probably pronating less as I've developed a little more efficient runner form. I think I will try some neutral shoes at least for short speed workout and see how I like them. Do you have neutral feet? My feet have very flat arches so I wear a moderate stability shoes.

Kathie,

I think I do best when I'm in a hurry. I don't know why. But I'll take it when I can.

Maurine,

You're such a diehard. I could never go and run that early especially with daylight saving time change.

Marc,

Thanks for saying "speedy". That is seldom in my vocab.

Dale,

I tied the tongues to the shoes wrong with the new shoes. It didn't bother me because I was rotating them with some older shoes. But last week I ran in them every day and by Wed.medium long run, my tendon was quite inflamed. So, yeah, pay attention to your shoes and the way you lace them periodically. I also think shoes shrink or get smaller with more mileage.

Mark,

What are you talking about? You NEVER EVER have to worry about me beating you. Now, Teena is a real threat. I think you should throw a rope around your GF and rein her in, she's the speedster to watch for.

Amber,

We're excited to come down to St. George this weekend. I just want to get it down so I can get a guaranteed entry to SG Marathon. You don't have to worry about that, do you?

I hope to see you there. You'll have to watch for me to come in...20+minutes AFTER you break the tape.

Yes, there are quite a few of us running Spectrum. I'm so excited to see them, such great friends from all over.

From Rhett on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 17:26:31 from 170.215.58.122

Smooth, yes I do have high arches. With flat feet you may be better off staying with the stability shoes.
