Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!! 

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

I survived! THANKS! KELLI!!!

I need to run a 1/2 mary before tapering for Boston.  Didn't register for Moab and was considering Provo City 1/2 when I found out Riverton City is putting on a new 1/2 marathon.  My concern was making wrong turns because I am VERY direction challenged.  I even got lost running a 5K.  So sweet Kelli said she would run the course with me and I jumped at the chance to run with her, who wouldn't want to...she's the BEST running partner!

We met at 9 to drop off her suburban at the finish and began our run at the start.  Boy, they're not kidding when they said it's windy in Riverton.   We encountered an invisible wall of headwind on an UPHILL.  Kelli is queen of hills; while I huffed and puffed, she chat away like it's a walk in the park.  I (we) had to walk at the top.

We made a quick pit stop at the park before getting on the JRP.  I really like running on the trail.  There's an uphill, then a very nice downhill where we practiced running fast.  I shouldn't have done it though 'cause it came back to bite me later. 

The next section of the route is off JRP.  I didn't care for the narrow road on a two-lane hwy with poor road shoulder.  Kelli assured me that there would be much less traffic on Sat.  Then we turned into a rural neighborhood.  There were some barking dogs in one house that would scare me bad if Kelli wasn't running with me.  Then came the infamous "S" hill.  I walked that while drinking.  For some reason, (it could just be in my head), I could not pick up the pace after walking.  That was around mile 8.5.   My legs wanted to cramp up.  I was glad Kelli was with me or I'd panic and call it quit.

We made it to Redwood Rd which wasn't as bad as I thought.  The road shoulder was wide and we had a nice tail wind.  We made a loop back to the park where my car was and it was very tempting to just stop and go home.  I was so glad Kelli was there and we didn't call it quit.  There was a nice downhill to the finish but my legs were trashed and I couldn't take advantage of it. 

The last two miles to the finish would have been eternity if Kelli wasn't there to run with me.  What a GREAT running partner and friend!  Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!  After we said goodbye, I went to the city hall to register for the race.  I had a fun time running with Kelli.  I'm sure by March 28, I will have fresher legs and ready for more FUN!!!!

Here are the splits: 8:58, 8:59, 9:38, 9:09, 9:56, 9:44, 10:29, 9:59, 12:21, 9:49, 9:36, 9:46, 9:52.  AP: 9:52

After I got home, showered, ate, I did the push up challenge final test.  I was tired; but I wanted to show my 16 yr old that I could do it.  I paused for 10 seconds after 60, again at 85, then with shaky arms made it to 100 and collapsed in a heap.  I expected my son to applaud, but instead he said:  "You didn't touch your nose to the floor."  What nerve!!! He promptly showed me how it's supposed to be done.  He didn't do 100 though, whether it's to save my ego or his, I didn't care 'cause I was too pooped to challenge him.

It sounds like you had a GREAT time running today with Kelli :) WHAT FUN :) have you looked into those salt tabs yet? Runners Corner has them and I think they might really help with those irritable leg cramps ;)

Great report there little lady!!! It was a tough morning for that run, but we finished and out times were not bad at all (that 12:21 was a lot of walking, so all is good!)

Thanks for running with me, I was happy to start the week with a great calorie burning workout! I have to get the pounds off so I can run fast again!!!

I am glad you still decided to sign up after running it. it is not easy, but not a killer either!!!

Awesome job on the push-ups! You are so amazing. Show your son the website where they demonstrate the proper form, you do not have to touch your nose to the ground! WOW, you did it! That is so cool!!!!

Smoothsana, YOU ARE MY HERO!!!! You are the first person I know of to successfully complete the 100 PU Challenge! (and after running 12.5 miles!!! only 2 days after running a blistering 10K AG award-winning performance! WOWWWWWWW! I bow to your Smoothness!

Great job on the PC challenge. I think that you deserve more than someone telling you your nose didn't touch the ground. You weren't doing ladies style...

So you liked the course to the Riverton half? I think I will be doing that and tagging a few miles to the end of it. I am doing the Provo half the following weeks too. 22 this week, then I will start the TAPER! Yippee!

Oh- btw, on a scale of 1-10. Put Painters, Hobble Creek, Ogden and Riverton, actually any 1/2's you have run. I need some idea of what to gear up for ;) (I am posting this same question on many other runners blogs too)

Thanks everyone for validating my PC!!! And the best part is I learn that push ups is good for running too. I didn't know that. How can sexy arms help with running?

The Riverton 1/2 is on Sat. March 28. For Boston taper timing wise the Provo City would be better. It's the following Sat. 4/4. But it's also General Conference and I want to stay close to home since I miss Oct Conference by running SGM.

I've never run Hobble Creek so I can't grade that one. I heard it's fast. It is on the same day as Park City Marathon which I've run two years in a row. If I weren't running Park City, I would definitely run Hobble Creek b/c it's fast. My concern is that it can be very crowded in a narrow canyon road.

Ogden Half: I've only run the full so I know the course on the second half. I think it's a great course. I just don't care for the mixture: relay, full, half, 5K, the buses, too much going on at the same time making it hard to focus or get in the groove, that's from the point of view of running a full.

Painter's: I've run it three years in a row. This year they have chip timing which makes it nice for eliminating the traffic jam at the finish. It is not a fast course. I would rate it an 8. Where else can you run a WINTER half marathon in Utah?

Riverton: It's brand spanking new so can't tell you about the organization yet. From running the course with very tired legs yesterday, I'd say it's a medium challenging course. It is definitely not a fast one. But I love the fact that it's small, local, no need for busing, no freezing at the start, etc. And it's cheap!

Hobble Creek and Ogden require busing up the canyon so you have to plan your pre-race potty-training accordingly. Hope this helps.
