Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!! 

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Lower back and legs were very tired last night; felt a little better when I woke up.  I have got to get out earlier.  Temp was already in the mid 70's with a warm south wind by the time I got to the HS track.  Plus there were zillion kids on the field, jr. league football teams, girls soccer teams, a few walkers, even one lady riding her bike.

Ran 2 miles warm up.  Did the 8 dynamic flexibility exercises.  Drank and set the water bottle by the start/finish purple line.  Ran the intervals as scheduled, except @ 4 - 12 sec. slower due to the heat factor...or I just didn't have the motivation to push too hard.  Concentrated on form and relaxed breathing.  Got a few cheers from the kids in my ward/stake.  FUN!!!

All with 400 m RI where I walked 100 m and jogged 300 m while sipping from water bottle.  Did I mention it was getting hot? 

2 mile cool down @ 19:00 running clockwise.  Stretched 10 sec. for each major muscles twice.  On the drive home, the car said outside temp was 82.  Thank heavens for car air-conditioner!!!

You ran that just perfect Smooth. Great job on getting out there. Even with the rising temp it didnt slow you down much at all. Awesome job. That heat can be a killer. What time did you hit the track btw??

THANKS Sno, Rachel and Mark. I hit the track at 9:06 am. I was up at 6am. The body just didn't want to go train. I have been training since Nov.'08 (for Boston). Andy was right assessing my lack of motivation. I'm at a point where the goal race seems to be still so far away and yet I've been training forever.

Smooth, I know how you feel. I am lacking a lot of motivation lately too. I know you have been training since November, and that is a very LONG time. Take it one stinkin' day at a time. Great speed work by the way.

Now if I could Xtrain like you, I'd be happier. For some reason I have a hard time doing what the schedule says to do. I love to run just lack motivation to train. Hmm, may be I'm getting bored, or rebellious, or just need someone to run with.

I'm with ya. I finally figure out one lap on the track is 400m so I had to focus on counting 2.5 laps to make 1K. I can't do math, punch lap button, focus on form, breath and run at the same time! I'm getting OLD!

Funny how quickly I forget that summer training means getting out the door EARLY! I'm not an early bird. Speed work isn't my favorite but I'm glad I got it done.

Nice running Smooth :) I haven't had a chance to check in on you this week, and it looks like you are plugging along as always, . . . doing AmAzInG things!!! So does your schedule call for 2 speedwork sessions a week? 1 tempo and 1 track? I would LOVE to hear how your talk goes for YW on the 5k the training. I'm sure you'll do GREAT!!!

Oh, and uh, , , ,heat? You want to talk about heat? ha ha , jk, I just have to hassle you a little from So.Utah. . . :) :) :) Everything's hotter in the heat though, hot is hot is hot!!! nice job pulling through. :)

Oddly I have been running better in the heat. Try the hat under water before leaving trick. You could even take a spray bottle of ice water or soak your shirt and rinse it out. It feels like an air conditioner when there is a slight breeze to add to it. Great work out Smooth!!! i

I would wilt, melt, self destruct if I had to run in So. Utah. You're amazing!

For this training cycle, I'm following the FIRST 3plus2 program. It has 3 key workouts, tempo, speed work and long. You're supposed to cross train for the other two days. But I don't know how to bike or swim or own gym membership so I just make up my own Xtrain.

The talk went well tonight. There were a lot of girls. We ran out of handouts and chairs. I think the girls are excited to start the 8 weeks 5K training program. We had fun talking about my favorite marathons experience. A few of the leaders stayed after the meeting and talked to me about marathon training, injuries prevention, shoes, running forms. We ended up staying for another 1.5 hrs.

The girls are GREAT! Such sweet and eager souls!

EXCELLENT ideas! I will try that. The YWs made me a headband that has some kind of beads inside, kinda like the materials in diapers, I think. When you soak the head band in ice water, the beads expend and stays cold and wet. They used that on their girls camp hike. I might try that on long runs. But I love your ideas of wet cap and shirt. At UVM, I tuck one of those thin cold sponges from mile 21 aid station under my cap.

Your run seems really hard. What plan are you following? Is there a reason why you are doing 1K repeats rather than 800 meter or mile repeats?

I'm following the plan from the book, Run Less, Run Faster, the FIRST 3plus2 training program. It has schedules for BQ time. Tells you exactly what to run and how fast to run them. I don't know the reason for the five 1K repeats other than that the different distance gives variety to interval running. Next week's intervals is 3 x 1600m. I am running less miles with 3 days of running. I'm hoping this will minimize injuries. You're supposed to have 2 days of Xtraining. Mark and Kristi are following the same program (of course with different BQ time than mine). It works perfect for them since they Xtrain nicely. I, on the other hand, don't know how to Xtrain; so I might not be doing it right...will see in 12+ weeks.
