Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

 :) :) :) The Just Cuz Party-a-thon!!! :) :) :)

Lowell had enough clothing, gear and food to crew the entire field of Full Marathoners at the Just Cuz today (granted there were only 18 marathon finishers).  He loaded my car up with a full box of Gu, a doz. pair of gloves, a year supply of hottie-hands, a case of water, an assortment of hats, fleece, jackets, shirts....my poor hubby had no idea the crew duty he was about to take on! :)  Arrived at Century Park (the finish of the Just Cuz Half, in our case the start of the Just Cuz Full) at 7:30, found Marci, saw several "early bird halfers" and race staff preparing the dutch oven food for post race feast.  The Full starts at 8.  Half starts at 10:13.  I was hoping to get to the top (turn around) before the Half starts...but Lowell had different ideas!

Temp was in the high 20s, we were toasty, a bit overdressed actually! :)

The race theme was either "Joe Fro" or "Zombie Appocalipse".  Marci did the natural fro, mine was a heavy duty troo bloo doo!  Lowell was himself!   :) :) :)

Lance, the RD is a funniest guy! We were laughing so hard at his pre-race announcement! :D With a 3-2-1-BAM, we were off, right on time at 8am! :)

The first mile has a slight decline turning onto the main road (which means an incline on the way back), everyone took off fast leaving us in their dust.  Hubby crewed along and stopped at mile 1 so we could throw our fleece in the car.  Ran by a golf course mile 2-3 where Lowell made us pick up every golf ball we saw.  A nasty headwind accompanied us for 2+ miles and subsided once we got into the canyon.

Took 1st Gu around mile 5 and removed the heavy duty fleece mittens! :)

Stopped at every aid station (not manned).  Used the pop.  Posed for pix! :)

First of the many many many pop trips!  I set a PR for the most pop visits EVER in my entire 7 years of running career!

Bill Mandler flying down the canyon at his mile 14ish while we were trudging up the steepest uphill part of the course at our mile 11+.  Lowell made me run up to him and tried to get a pix.  He was SO FAST!!!! :)  What's with the huge neon shirt Lowell made me wear!  :)

We were soon running upstream into a fast moving wall of Halfers (over 500).  We high-fived and exchanged cheers!  Some guy runners were hitting my hand so hard that my left arm nearly got amputated! :)  Lowell knows so many of these local runners.  I think these girls were exasperated when we stopped them to take pictures, not just one but three or more pix, plus Lowell had to introduce each one of them to me! :)

I was afraid that TJ (who was running the Half) had missed us amidst the huge throng of runners.  So we phoned my hubby who had driven up ahead at the start of the half.  He saw TJ waiting alone at the top for us so he could run with us!!!  What a true blue friend! :) :) :)  However his first words when he saw me was:  "You look gross.  I'd get rid of that shirt if I were you!"  :)

Happy to be running downhill finally.  I was hoping to take the downhill fast...but Lowell had different idea!  Marci, TJ and Smooth! :)

This was one of many pictures Lowell requested the volunteers/hubby to take.  He even showed them how to take panaromic view mode.  I had fun visiting with the volunteers and exchanged good laughs! :)  Happy to ditch the blue fro and neon shirt to hubby!

As mentioned before my kidneys were doing an excellent job so I made numerous mad dash to every single pop along the course including the gas station bathroom.  Lowell's were doing the same.  Except he had on a body suit!!!  Yep, I got to unzip the back of his suit each time.  Marci ditched us at mile 15ish!  Can you blame her?!!!

Lowell was struggling after 17 or 18 miles.  He had some leg cramps Thur night and was worried.  You know he's tired when he's not singing or telling jokes anymore.   He could only run a short 50-100 yards at a stretch.  TJ and I chatted happily and encouraged Lowell along.  I remembered he made a deal with me to eat a twinkie at the "temptation station" around mile 24 so I told him we had to make it to that station.   When we got to the station, all the Ding Dongs and Twinkies were GONE!!!  So we went to the gas station where Lowell bought us Twinkies and chocolate milk while hubby filled up the tank and I used the ladies room.  I have not eaten a Twinkie since the 1980s.  I ate the whole thing and drank the chocolate milk.  Got a terrible tummy-stitch when I tried to run!  I'll never do that again!  Mile 24 split was 20:35:90.  TJ said we might make it a sub-6 marathon!  Aaaagggghhhh!  Someone please save me!!!  :)

We were running/walking with couple groups of ladies.  One of them was running back on the course.  She told us that her niece who was 5 weeks post partumn was having some cramping issues and was further back.  So we phoned hubby to turn around and drive up the course to meet her niece who luckily was running with some family members.  They urged her to take a ride from my hubby to the finish.  Yep, hubby played EMT role too!  :)

Enough walking already, please let me run!!! :)  Notice Lowell who sponsored the bibs, had arranged for our bibs to reflect our age! :)

With less than a mile to go!  17 yr old Rachel Fisher who finished the Half, came to rescue Lowell from the death march!  :)

Our friends met us at the last turn into the park and we ran thru the finish shute together holding hands!!!  My 9th marathon of the year, 6 in 11 weeks, in the book, and my slowest marathon EVER by choice!!!  We had a blast!!!  We stayed for the award and prize drawing after a feast of chilli, dutch oven stew, pumpkin pie!  :)   It was a beautiful day to make memories!!!  :)

Today we went to my son's Ward for Skylar's baby blessing.  :)  She was asleep (not crying, good thing cause she has a very healthy strong cry) during the blessing which meant we could hear every word (Jeff is a soft spoken daddy)! :)  Jeff pronounced a very thoughtful and beautiful blessing.  We had a wonderful gathering of families and friends after church in their condo!

Skylar was getting very hungry and wondered what was all the fuss with so many people in her otherwise quiet little home! :)

Wasn't going to run today.  But it was the first time in months that Carolyn wanted to come out and join us.  She has not run much since UVM.  So we (hubby, Wendy, Karen and I ) did run/walk/talk with her.  What a gorgeous morning!!!  Didn't wear watch but Wendy's Garmin showed 5 miles in a little over an hour.

After the outing, Karen, hubby and I went to the pool.  While doing the TI drill, I could feel a tug on my right ITB. :(

We ran to the Elementary School to vote but the line was SO LONG!!!!!  So we decided to finish our run and come back to vote later.  Should've went with hubby when he peeled off for 2 miles...instead I stayed with Karen and Wendy up on the canal trail.  When we reached the tunnel by Smith's we walked down and then back up, suddenly my right ITB locked up when I resumed running.  It was ok running on the flat but got painful going downhill so I stopped.   We were over a mile from home.  I kept telling Karen and Wendy to leave me because Wendy had a time restraint but they stayed to walk me home.  I am so blessed to have such wonderful friends! :)

Hubby and I went to the pool.  The hot-tub helped loosen the ITB.  We then went to vote!

Evening:  Yoga.  It felt so good to stretch!!!

No running!  Dang ITB!!! :(  Hubby came home from his run and said he saw Karen, Wendy and Carolyn on 2750 N.  They had purposely taken the side street to avoid running by my house so I wouldn't feel bad.  So thoughtful!!!

Hubby and I went to the pool.  I am still stuck on Drill 1 & 2.  I'm glad there's hardly anyone at the pool.

Another 3 hrs lunch visit with Beverly.

My cheapo swim suit is thread bare so hubby took me shopping for a new one. :)  We then went to dinner and movie.  My ITB really bugs after sitting.

Another day of zero running.  Went to the pool again.  I did a little freestyle after getting bored with TI drills that I don't seem to be improving on.

Went with hubby to my monthly temple date with friends at the Draper Temple.  Since there was no cafeteria, we went to Blue Lemon for lunch afterward.

VERY WINDY!!!  Leaves a flying everywhere!!!!  On my way to the P.O. I got caught in a leavy twirlwind on 300W 300N!!!  It was like wizard of Oz!!!  No place like home!!!

I need to do these regularly:

Went to the pool with Karen and Leslie.  Karen is getting so good at swimming.  Leslie has been swimming since she was 4 and was in competition swim teams (including college) showed us some pointers.  It was very impressive to watch her and how quickly Karen learned.  I, on the other hand, am still stuck on learning how to balance in the water....sigh!!!  However, they were so kind to point out that just 2.5 months ago I was petrified of water and now I can swim across (albeit a shallow and shorter pool) without stopping.  Our goal is to "graduate" to the regular deeper pool!  :)

Core.  ITB strength/rehab.

Went to the pool with hubby.  There was a high school swim meet going on.  Thankfully the leisure pool wasn't too crowded.  Practice TI skill drill 1, 2, and beginning of drill 3.

The rest of the day was spent in preparation for Bryan's senior recital.  The Madsen Recital Hall was nearly packed full.  I should've brought twice as much refreshment; but hubby said it was just perfect.

The most important part was that Bryan performed beautifully.  His professor came up to us after the concert and could not say enough good things about Bryan as an artist AND as an outstanding fine young man with pure heart and Christlike quality.

He is now going to focus on applying for grad school.  That application process involves making video recordings of required repetoire to the schools of his choice (about 11 conservatories/universities) before Dec 1.  Hopefully he will be invited to life auditions early next year.  It is a very competitive process with application fees starting at $100.

Ran/walked with hubby, Wendy and Karen.  ITB tugged a little after 3 miles and running on a slight decline.  I thought with no running for the last 5 days that it is good to go...nope!!!  Sigh!!!  :(

We then went to the pool while they did lap freestyle, I practiced TI skill 1, 2 and 3.

Now my ITB is giving me fits especially after sitting.  STINK!!! :(

Went to the pool for 45 min.  Practice TI skill 1, 2, 3.  Freestyle 4 laps.

VT then lunch with Olga and Wendy.  Walk with one straight leg is no fun.

Late for the 8p yoga class so only got 45 min.

Hubby's ankle is swollen again; so I went to the LC by myself.  Ran 2 miles on the track.  So glad the traffic flow was counterclockwise which didn't aggravate the ITB.  But 16 laps is all I can handle!  Got a drink from the fountain, went down to the locker to get my membership card to open the cardio room gate and ran 2 miles on the TM.  About 1 mile into the run, I could feel slight pain on the top of the calf lateral to the knee.  Focus on form, slowed the pace to 9:15 which seemed to help.  Gently stretched all the key muscles.  Felt so good to get all sweaty!!!

Went down to the pool.  Practiced TI skill 1, 2, 3.  The pool was crowded today so I didn't do skill 4.

Evening:  Going to yoga class in a jiff.

Two groups of teens from Willow Creek Middle School and Renaissance Academy were playing in the leisure pool this morning....so crowded and annoying!!!  After getting bumped, splashed, hit a few times, I went over to the regular pool where 2/3 of the pool was occupied by a water aerobic class and all the lanes in the other 1/3 were taken.  So I practiced at the shallow end where the class weren't using.

Today's hubby's birthday so we went shopping at the Traverse Mountain Outlet Mall (it's also their grand opening day).  He has lost 10 lbs since running consequently his clothes are too baggy and needs new clothes!!! :) :) :)

Since it's his birthday, I let him choose where/what he wants to eat for lunch.  He chose Burger King (ick) where we saw Teena's brother...what a happy surprise! ♥

Tonight we're hosting a birthday dinner, will be fun!!! :)

Today's run was extra special!!! :)  It has been a LONG LONG time since I ran with Luz.  I have missed her SO much.  I was SO SO SO happy to see her!!!  We met at the JRP and RAD was able to join us.  (We miss Toby terribly!)  The weather was perfect, overcast sky, calm and not too cold!  The three of us chatted away the miles.  We spotted Chad around Willow Park when he had already gone 4+ miles because we started late (sorry Chad).  Nevertheless, it was great to see him and we were able to run a mile or so with him.

With my knee/ITB issue, I wasn't sure how far I could go.  There is something special about being with friends that make everything magic.  When we reached the south end, Luz asked how far we've run (she didn't wear her Garmin).  She got a little nervous when we realized we've run 5+ miles.  This is the farthest we've both run since our respective Full marathons.  RAD being her chirpy, positive and cheerful self encouraged and kept us going on the return run back to the car.  Seriously, you'd never know she had run an ultra marathon at the LV Ragnar a week ago. :)

Well, the running was over but not the visiting and catching up; so we spent the remainder of the morning huddled together in a crowded Kneader's and a warm car, talking, laughing, exchanging good food ideas and enjoying each others' company and friendships.

THANK YOU LUZ and RAD for a wonderful wonderful morning!!! Sure love you girls!!!  :) :) :)

I kept the run short. Ice, foam roll, stretch. Sis. doesn't have wifi in her home, so I'm here at the library.

While Joe, David and Larry went deep sea fishing.  Sis and I went to have dim sum and watched movie but not before I went for a run which barely made a dent on the million calories I consumed yesterday! :)

To avoid running down the 20+% grade hill, I drove down to Palos Verdes South Dr.   It was a bit scary driving down the winding steep and narrow road IN the fog!  Thankfully there was very little traffic.

Ran south half mile on the Trump Golf Course parkway then turned down onto the dirt trails (which had a warning sign stating that beyond this point the trail is steep and uneven).  Saw one guy running up, couple of hikers.  I walked on the steepest hairpin turns and over slick boulders.  Saw two girls running towards me so I asked them if the trail leads down to the beach...yes and also back up to the Trump Golf Clubhouse on the north end.  Cool!!!  The trail is mostly sand with small rocks.  After crossing couple of bridges I took one of the westward trails and ran down to the beach.  I looked up the cliff and saw a lone man standing above watching me.  That kinda spooked me so I ran around the cliff out of his sight.  It was too foggy of a day to enjoy any ocean view so when I reached the beach, instead of running there, I turned around and ran back up.

At the top the trail merge onto a paved trail bordering the golf course.  It was nice to be able to pick up the pace on this trail until it reached the golf course.  I tried to be quiet when I ran around a putting green where some golfers were doing their thing.  Ran about half mile up back to Palos Verdes Dr.   Then I turned north and got a drink from the drinking fountain at Marilyn Ryan Park.

Continued north on the dirt shoulder of Palos Verdes and passed an elderly couple running single file.  Turned around at the gate to the archery range and encountered the couple again.  We stopped and chatted a bit.  The husband has a "Western States 100" running cap on.  He has run Wasatch 100 in the "early days".  They were very interested in the "Top of Utah" marathon when they saw my TOU shirt.  They're on their run around the entire Palos Verdes peninsula which they do regularly.  They wore no Garmin as they live on the east side of the peninsula and expect to finish their run around 1pm.  I had thought that it is a dangerous route.  The road is narrow, winding, rolling hilly with hardly any shoulder and a 24" wide bike path that are frequented with groups of cyclists.  At some sections there is nothing but a guardrail between the road and the cliff.  Apparently the runners and cyclists here have no fear of fast moving vehicles. :)

After bidding g'day to the couple, I continued south back to the park for another drink and another mile to the car.  It was a very pleasant run aside from the fog.  Right ITB by the fibula squawked as usual during the warm up mile and running downhill but better on uphill.

Sis took me to Seafood Town for lunch.  We had black bean stir fry clam, Singapore noodle and fried tofu with vegetables.  Yum!

Ice massage and stretch the ITB while we watched movie.

Our boys brought home 130 fish which they cleaned, scaled, gutted and put in freezer bags.  We steamed 8 fish and warmed up Thanksgiving left-over for dinner.

Hubby drove us down the hill for a quick run.  I ran the same route as yesterday minus the south end of Palos Verdes.  Hubby's right ankle is getting better but he only ran one mile to be safe.

We packed one big box and a small cooler full of frozen fish and individual meals of stew, soup, meatloaf, moochi rice, turkey, ham and assortment of bread for David to take home.  We then drove separate cars to Ten Ten Restaurant for dim-sum.  After lunch, we bid David good bye as he drove from the restaurant to Rt. 91 East back to Phoenix.  It was so wonderful to have him come to SoCal for Thanksgiving.  We haven't seen him since Christmas/New Year earlier this year.

After David drove off, we went to 99 Ranch to shop for Chinese food...the persimons were $.79 a pound...what a deal!!!

Joe and Sis treated us to a scrumptious dinner of Peking duck, House Special pork chops, shrimp with Chinese broccoli.  We have dessert every night this week.  Athena here I come! :)

After we got home from dinner, we called our youngest sister in Canada.  It's her birthday today!  I have not seen her for almost 12 years!!!  It was a wonderful hour long phone visit! :)

Long drive home.  We stopped at a McDonald along I-210 to get WiFi and tried unsuccessfully to locate a church for Sacrament.  So we drove on until we hit Vegas and I remembered attending a church just outside Boulder City, east of Henderson right off I-515 back in Jan this year when I ran the Angel Marathon in Lake Mead.  So we took a chance to see if they might have a 1pm Sacrament.  Lo and behold we got there at 12:40 and they do have a 1pm service!  Wonderful spirit in the meeting and great talks!

We stopped in SG for gas and I decided to drive the next leg.  We hit heavy slow/stopping traffic all the way to Beaver.  Apparently there were 3 accidents just outside Hurricane.  Wendy and Karen who were about 1.5  and 2 hr ahead of us text us about the traffic delay.  They too were driving home with the rest of the Thanksgiving traffic.  My daughter and her family also encountered heavy traffic traveling home from SG to Houston.  Traffic was very light in California, Nevada and AZ but got bad in UT and TX in the late afternoon and evening hours.

Got home at 9:30pm finding all is well.  Unpacked the big cooler of frozen fish and small cooler of assortment of food.  So so so so tired.  Legs so so so so tight and achy.  So so so so good to sleep in my own bed.  :)

Slept in till 7am since we didn't get home until late last night.  Missing my sister already!

Wendy, Karen, hubby and I ran together getting caught up with our Thanksgiving weekends events.  Karen went to her sister in Vegas.  Wendy went to Carlsbad for her daughter's soccer tournament.  Hubby only wanted to run 2.  Us girls ran east to Smith's then west on Canal Trail then turned around and back to home.

Hubby and I went swimming afterward.  There was nobody at the leisure pool!  So nice to be able to practice TI drill 1, 2, 3, 4 without anyone splashing me or me drifting all over the place! :)

Ran west down Canal Trail south down Rail Trail then east up 2600N with Karen and Wendy.  Right ITB squawked again on the downhill and first couple miles but okay on the uphill.

Karen and I went swimming for 40 min. afterward.

Laundry galore!!! :)

Evening:  yoga.  I LOVE this class. :)

I've read SO much about RAD's awesome urban trail run!  I FINALLY got to experience it this morning!!! :) :) :)  I was SO excited when she made arrangement to have her SIL tend little Adam so she could run the urban trail with me after she dropped the kids off at school.  (Her Newton buddies usually meet at 5:30 which is WAY too early for l'ole me)!!!

What a FUN FUN FUN 8 miler running south along a canal trail then west to Day Break and around the Lake (I've always wanted to run there) and thru some fence to a REAL trail along a dry creek.  I LOVE running with RAD, good laughs, inspiring conversations, wonderful company! :) :) :)  The weather was perfect aside from a little headwind at times.  The right ITB complained during the initial miles but was fine the rest of the run.  I did get a little tired the last 1.5 miles (didn't eat breakfast).

THANK YOU Rachel for sacrificing your morning to take me on this wonderful run!!! :)

Didn't sleep well last night.  Almost, almost took up the offer to walk with Diane and Wendy; but since I had told Karen I'd run with her, I declined.  Dragged my tired self out the door.  Once we got going, it was a very pleasant run.  The knee did the same thing, tuckled a bit running down the tunnel but fine running up.

Went to the pool with hubby and Karen afterward.  They were swimming with such grace while I looked kinda silly doing my TI drills.  I'm sure I'll get it one of these days!

Temple with hubby and Wendy.  My knee buckled again after kneeling for a few min.  Had to walk with one straight leg...kinda embarrassing!  :)

Karen wanted to run 13 today since her Sat. is crazy busy.  I only wanted to do 10 so she ran 2 around her block before meeting me, Wendy and John (Zeus, the dog).  Originally we were planning to run to the Alpine park where the eternal flowing fountain is.  But John had other adventure in mind.  :)

Us girls followed man and dog onto the Murdock Canal Trail then hiked up over the trail tunnel, crossed Timpanogos Hwy up to Traverse Mtn.  My knee was fine running uphill, but I worried about the return downhill trip and the wind.  Since we girls didn't carry water, John suggested that we ran inside the Outlet Mall (mile 3) to get a drink (he had his own camelpak).  I've never seen such a palatial restroom! :)

We then got onto the pack-dirt unpaved canal trail.  This is a great trail skirting the hillside up above Cabella's with nice view of the valley by the point of the mountain.  We can see the upper portion of JRP to the west (by the wind mill and Veterans Memorial) and the "hangliding" hill up ahead.

We cut off from the trail thru a water-run-off-rock-basin and entered the Traverse Mtn. neighborhood park where unfortunately the bathroom and water fountain were closed.  It's a really nice park though!  John used his iPhone GPS to locate the way to the Travers Mtn Elementary (mile 5.25) where we got a drink and ate our Gu.

We had to run more uphill to get to a traffic-circle that lead to the main road.  With a stiff headwind running uphill, I nearly got an asthma attack.  I started to run backward so I could catch my breath.  I told my running partners earlier that Carina and her friends live in Traverse Mtn.  Lo and behold, a girl resembled Carina in a white mini-van drove by and waved to me!  I turned back and waved and told Wendy that must be Carina!  That put a smile on my face! :) :) :)

Then we had to run about a mile downhill with a stiff headwind!  My knee was hurting bad enough that at some point I swung my knee straight legged with each stride.  It totally messes up my hips.  The beautiful view of the valley helped ease the pain! :) Stopping at the traffic light to cross Timpanogos Hwy made my knee locked up; but once we were back on the flat Canal Trail, it felt better.

Boy, was I tired and slow!!!  I used to run 7 miles every weekday and 15+ miles most weekends!!! I used to run Karen home then back for extra mile but NOT today!  How did I get myself into this sad shape! :(   O well, at my age, I'm grateful to be out running with great friends, enjoying an unseasonably mild Nov day.  :) :) :)
