Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Smooth thanks for the happy cross training comments! My foot doesn't hurt to walk on it anymore but I ran .15 yesterday and the pain was there. Am treating it like a stress fracture and hope 3 more weeks or less will get me better! Did a 21 miler today 11 on stair climber 10 on elliptical. Hopefully it counts right? Boston 8 week away. Still possible I think.

Melanie ~ Are you wearing a boot? Yes, stair climber and elliptical counts!!! You're smart to cut the run short when pain showed up. Injuries STINKS!!!

I'm with ya!!! Here's to complete healing in 2-3 weeks and still possible for Boston!

Keep up with the xtraining! We'll get there!!! :)

Thanks so much for the text this morning Smooth! I'm so glad you are able to start cross training...gotta those endorphins!

I am not wearing a boot since the podiatrist ruled out no stress fracture. My friend let me borrow hers. I walked around yesterday in that thing and I think it made my foot start to hurt. I have no pain walking around anymore. But when I walk I don't have my normal walk. I am compensating. I am wearing a sturdy pair of running shoes. I might call the Dx tomorrow. Do you think I need to get one? My other friend had one that is like a shoe no up the leg ski boot thing. Did you read that taking IB might slow up the healing? Are you taking IB?

From Smooth on Sun, Feb 26, 2012 at 21:59:44 from 174.27.219.252

Mel ~ My podiatrist couldn't rule out stress fracture completely without a bone scan or MRI. He said the initial treatment is the same whether it is stress fracture or soft tissue damage, that is rest and immobilization for 2-3 weeks. so that's why he put me in a boot. Healing of fracture may show up on Xray as calous or new osteoblasts 2-4 weeks after the injury. If your podiatrist is certain that you don't have a stress fracture then there is no need to immobilize it. When you say there is no pain walking then why are you compensating with the walk? Do you mean compensating while wearing the boot you borrowed? when I first wore the boot, I was walking funny and awkward. But once I got used to it and found a shoe on the good foot that has the same heel height as the boot, my walk is now normal and I get around fine. My boot is the high calf kind and I have short legs, so it is like wearing ski boot. Within 5 days of boot confinement my lower leg has atrophied...so I hated my boot. But I like being able to cross training wearing it. I just feel like it is giving the foot a degree of protection. So to answer your question. If you can walk normally without pain and compensating then don't wear a boot. However if you have pain doing any form of exercise then the low calf boot may help. As long as the boot you are borrowing fits you, then no need to get one. My boot cost $240 which insurance does not cover. I wish I had borrowed RAD's. Hers is the shorter calf kind!

yes, my son who is a podiatrist in his first year of residency in Ohio told me that ibuprofen might slow healing. So I am not taking any. I took Tylenol the first 2 days after the injury before bedtime so I could sleep.

What a crazy amount of x-training! Glad you got SO much done. You are really going to be ready to go this week when you go back to the doc and he sees you're clear and good :)

From Smooth on Sun, Feb 26, 2012 at 22:27:26 from 174.27.219.252

RAD ~ Crossing my fingers that he will clear me of stress fracture on Tue. I think I will start out by walking on the treadmill on an incline like you did then gradually introduce the run. I will have to copy cat your post boot rehab sans swimming and spinning of course! If he won't clear me to run then I will see if I can do aqua jogging and do that lazy river walking with my old water aerobic shoes. Gotta mix up the xtraining somehow so I don't go crazy! :)

Your TRI yesterday was awesome and very motivating! Hope you are having a great Sabbath! :)
