Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!! 

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Last run on the HS track for awhile.  The bleachers, field and tracks were littered with the left over of Homecoming festives.  Groups of students were picking up trash, sweeping, powering the leaf blowers; most of them just loitered around.  They even put one boy in a trash bag and carried him around.  Silly kids!  The coach and teachers were looking at clip boards and milling around.  One class came out and I overheard the teachers said something like the boys must run one lap, the girls may walk.  What kind of physical educaton is this?

Schedule says 10-20 min warm up, 6x400 @ 1:44 (400m RI), 10 min. cool down

Warm up miles:  9:05, 8:10

1x400 - 1:40 (2:28)

2x400 - 1:41 (2:33)

3x400 - 1:48 (had to weave around the walkers & joggers) (3:07, drank water)

4x400 - 1:43 (2:40)

5x400 - 1:44 (2:42)

6x400 - 1:41 (2:40)

Cool down mile: 9:00

6 miles in 52:29.  AP: 8:45

What is this? Sure, follow the play!! You tough woman you!! I only did two and look how strong you stayed!! My throat was burning after the second one and my husband looked bored. He was really just not looking forward to the jog home : D.

Unfortunately, the same can be said for almost education in general. Expectations are getting way too low for students these days. Especially, when our kids are only getting smarter, younger.

I'm all in for the Julie and Smooth phys ed program and will be sending my kids! :) School really gets to be a joke sometimes lately. Nice speedy work Smooth - you did GREAT on those repeats, SO ready for a NEW PR at SGM!!! Can't wait to hear the news!!!

Wow Smooth, that was one serious workout and you made it sound easy. I'm excited for you race. Now the work is all done, just time to...eat. I read Gary's carb loading at Berlin to Doone last night. She was amazed at all he eats, especially on race morning.

I agree, what kind of physical exercise is that? The students at my school are SO DANG LAZY when it comes to running at our school. They have to do 2/3 a mile in 11:30 mm. A lot of the parents complain too because it's too hard for their student.... Hmmm something is worng. Then they sale donuts in the hall for breakfast twice a week. Way to fight child obesity!

I have a question for you... I have the WORST charlie horse in my left hamstring. It hurts at night and I can't sleep. What do I do?

Oh, yeah, Gary's oldest sister (59yrs old) is skinny as a twig, a non-runner, eats like that too. Unbelievable!

Bec ~ My daughter did her dissertation on Childhood Obesity. It makes me sad to see young capable bodies wasted like that. If our bodies are the temple why do we treat it like a warehouse?

I answered your question on your blog. OK, I didn't address that nocturnal part. I used to have those (waking me up from sleep) when I was pregnant, in my calves, not hamstrings though. My doctor said it was from a calcium imbalance. He didn't explain the etiology of it; just said to increase the consumption and absorption of calcium. However, I think in your case, there are multiple reasons and you might have to be a good detective to sort things out.

To answer your question, that's sounds like CRAPPY physical education to me! The only thing I think of is that it was some sort of reward that the girls earned but taking away exercise is NOT my idea of a reward!!
