Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Not sure if it's the cooler weather (aggravating the arthritis) or switching back to running in the Elixir; both my metatarsals have been bugging the last few days.  Since it's bilateral, I'm hoping it's not a stress fracture brewing.  So, Karen and I decided that we should not run today.  Went to the pool to practice breathing and swimming for 40 min. then did 20 min of core and arms with aqua-dumbells.  Then made a mad dash to the Clinic for my Dexa-scan and blood work!  :)

This has been a tough year for you my friend. It's been a tough year for me too; but I gave up trying to perform/race about 18 months ago. It's been a different kind of journey to learn to enjoy running in a different, non self-competing way. Maybe like the Jewish farmers let their fields rest on the 7th year--this is your "7th year". I had an old time running friend tell me--some years you run more than others. I miss races, and seeing friends. But my body is finally getting stronger. It has taken more than a year. I miss you too!

From RAD on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 14:32:42 from 98.202.23.178

I'm glad you listened to your body and took that much needed rest day! Plus, I love hearing about you swimming :)

From Smooth on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 14:46:14 from 65.130.14.36

Luz ~ so good to hear from you! I have missed you terribly! The 7th year thing has a good merit. I read some time ago in Runners World that most average runners plateau or even decline after seven years! :). I am SO HAPPY that your body is getting better and stronger and you can finally enjoy running for running sake. I have given up on "racing". So very grateful to be able to wog (walk/jog) on! :)

RAD ~ I admit that I'd rather put in some outside miles today given how beautiful it is out there! If it weren't for Karen (I can blame her since she's not on the blog to defend herself). Anyhow, I just want to stay healthy so I can keep on running albeit so very very slow these days! :)

So smart! :)

When do you get the results?

From Smooth on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 15:15:06 from 65.130.14.36

The doc will go over the results with me on my yearly physical which is scheduled on the Monday after SGM! But I did peek at the screen and I think my Tscore is still in the osteopemia state! :)

From Tara on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 15:21:37 from 75.169.141.11

Hopefully it's nothing and goes away soon. Sounds like you've had a fracture there in the past,

From Tara on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 15:22:52 from 75.169.141.11

Well, I was not ready to send that message yet....but the thought has slipped:) Happy healing, cross training and running (hopefully soon enough).

From Bec on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 19:08:44 from 70.115.203.100

I just love that you got a pass to the L.C.!!! I miss that place. Please promise me that you will go to the TM class. It's mon, weds, and fri at 9 a.m. I think. Those ladies have fun on TMs!!! I still have not seen anything like it at any other gym.

Hope the Dexa scan came back well.

From Smooth on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 19:17:22 from 65.130.14.36

Tara ~ thanks for the healing vibes. Yep, 2 sf and 2 episodes of tachycardia this year really stinks! But I think things are on the upswing! :)

Bec ~ The Tread class is on Mon and Wed at 9:30. It is so popular that you have to get there at least 30 min beforehand to get a pass. :)

From DaleG on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 19:52:40 from 152.216.11.5

Oh my, I hope you don't get anymore stress fractures. Glad you skipped the run today.

From Carina on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 21:07:04 from 204.15.86.83

I hope everything is feeling better this evening! Running is for sure my first love, but I'm a tiny bit jealous that you know how to swim!! Great cross training today.

From Markir on Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 13:39:26 from 64.72.223.206

I'm glad to see you're swimming. Keep at it. I promise it gets easier. Of course that's what they say about running!!

From Nancy on Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 17:13:45 from 76.23.21.118

I think you were very smart to swim.

From The Quiet Pirate on Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 18:20:10 from 71.49.55.78

Smooth- you were smart to swim and let your tooties rest today. It is hard to not run outside when we have such beautiful fall weather to enjoy after such a hot summer.

And I learned something new today- I'd never heard about the 7th year of field rest. Causes me to reflect on this idea quite a bit. I wonder if after 6 years of marriage I should have taken a year off from housework and cooking.?????

From Smooth on Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 20:07:09 from 65.130.14.36

Dale ~ crossing my fingers that it is just tendonitis.

Carina ~ I don't know how to swim!!! :) Seriously, I practice in a 3ft deep pool and barely make it across the 23 yards lap. I heard it's good for my legs but they sure feel just as heavy in the water as on land! :)

Kirsten ~ I sure hope it gets easier. I'm still afraid of drowning! :)

Nancy ~ thanks!

QP ~ definitely absolutely we should be exempt from housework, cooking, cleaning every 7 years!!! You are so dang cute and funny! :)
