Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

This is the third year I have run Park City as part of the Grand Slam.   The things I like about this race:  1) No bus ride  2) Nice staging area at the start 3) Good long training run 6 weeks before SGM 4) Hubby can drive to various locations to cheer me along the course 5) Small town yet out of state feel (50 states runners make this a destination race) 6) The course is never boring.

This year hubby got the cabin for 3 days so we turned it into a mini vacation.   We went shopping Fri and Sat afternoons at the Outlet Mall; ate at great restaurants and even made it to 3 quarters of my son's game in Riverton Fri. night.

RAD and Bec got to the cabin late Fri. night.  We went to bed about 11:40pm.  At 4:45am my cell phone rang.  Teena's chirpy voice asked:  "Are you on the bus?"  "No, I'm not on the bus?"  "Where are you?"  "I'm in the cabin."  "Did I wake you up?"

RAD, Bec and I got to the Fieldhouse around 6:00am, saw AmberG and couple of friends.  This year they moved the start line over by the Newpark Hotel  instead of just right outside the Field house.  I lined up with Alan, Eric, Rob, RAD and Bec about mid pack.  No National Anthem this year, just GO and no one was in a hurry.

The first five miles went by fast, RAD and I enjoyed the slow warm up and sunrise.  We stopped and walked thru every aid station.  We had fun chatting away.   Took my first gel around mile 6 while RAD used the porta-potty.  On the Rail Trail portion, a guy with loud slapping feet would run either right in front of us or right behind breathing down our necks.  It was very annoying.  We finally ditched him for good once the elevation started to climb around mile 12.   We were running a 9:45 average pace.

We saw Leslie and Gary around mile 14 by the city park.  She was looking good and they seemed to be enjoying their run.   I like this portion as it's the only shady part of the course.  Bec was waiting at the open mall turnoff since she was cutting out the Deer Valley loop.  We spilled out of the trail onto a roundabout where my friend was volunteering as crossing guard.  We ran on the annoying slanted road/sidewalk up to Deer Valley watching runners come down.  Saw and side-fived my neighbor, Bruce.

Took my 3rd gel at the bottom of the Deer Valley loop and grabbed a washcloth which I would wet and kept with me the rest of the race.  By now the temp was getting hot.  We're at the top of the course just before mile 17 and the elevation would drop.  My legs felt great, no quad or ITB pain to speak of.  The only thing bugging was my left arch and bottom of the feet most likely from running on the dirt/rock trail and old shoes.  A stone has embedded itself in the bottom of my right shoe/heel for almost 20 miles.  Anyway we took the downhill easy as RAD was concerned about her ITB.

We met Bec at the roundabout and ran thru the open mall and the skier bridge where hubby was cheering (his 4th of 6 cheering spots).  We then went up 8th street.  While RAD and Bec ran, I walked.  It's honorable to walk this uphill blip.  We followed the runners ahead who had turned too soon and ran down on the wrong street (Woodside Ave).  By the time we reached the Park City Ski resort we had to run up Empire St to the aid station, STINK!

We "bumped" into Maurine in the Golf course neighborhood around mile 19.  She took our picture.  We stopped at the aid station before heading to the bike trail to look for tape for RAD's knee.  Maurine caught up to us and we had a volunteer took our picture.   Took my 4th gel.

We walked/ran the next 3 miles as RAD's ITB was bugging.  We got to the McPolin Barn (mile 21) aid station where we couldn't find any tape.  RAD rubbed some ICY-HOT gel pack that I brought and took an advil.   I ate orange, banana and was surprised at how fresh my legs felt.

We crossed the hwy tunnel and began my least favorite part of the course, never ending winding dirt trail.   I just wanted to get it done so I told RAD to keep me in sight and ran ahead.  I was able to run couple of miles at 8:45 passing many runners.  Then I made the mistake of stopping at the aid station by the soccer field.  My shins started to cramp up when I resume running.  I slowed and changed strides.  Then the muscles just behind the knees started to cramp up.  I walked to calm it down.  I knew if I stopped to stretch, I would not be able to run as this is what happened at Ogden where I had to walk the entire Grant St.  I would run as soon as the cramp ease up and walk when it showed up.   I prayed the entire last mile and half with fear of charlie horse ceasing me.  The spasms moved all over my lower legs.

SO so so  glad that the finish was right on the trail, meaning no hair pin turn onto the grass, and I could keep jogging once I crossed the finish.  I was very happy that charlie horse never ceased me.   I was surprised to see the last mile split was 10:08 and the 0.2 mile was 8:49.  My finish time was 4:23:22, a 10 min. PR from the last 2 years on a much hotter day.

I think not running DNews Marathon and Provo River 1/2 (which I did last year) might have helped.  But really, it is having RAD to run and chat with that made this so much easier and fun.

THANK YOU Rachel for running with me!  YOU ROCK!

Rachel & me at the finish. What a fun run!!!

So glad to see you on the course, Smooth. Sounds like you had a lot of fun in the race. It gets lonely sometimes on the course and it was a challenge to see how far I could get before friends would pass me.

From Kimmy on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 16:51:10 from 75.169.121.183

Smooth so glad that Charlie never came this time. Teena, kathie and I were thinking about you at the end of Hobble Creek 1/2. We were feeling the heat at that time and realized you still had 7 or 8 miles left. We were all trying to send good vibes your way!!!!

From DonGardinero on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 17:06:55 from 75.162.186.95

Great run Smooth. It sounds like it was just a nice leisurely stroll for you and you set a 10 min course PR without any charlie horses!!!! You are set for a new PR at SGM this year. Stay healthy.

From Smooth on Tue, Aug 25, 2009 at 11:45:54 from 71.32.235.5

Maurine ~ It was so so so so fun to see you chugging along at that neighborhood. Seriously you gave us quite the positive boost there. THANKS for taking our pictures. You made it so fun!!!

Kimmy ~ THANKS for sending positive vibes my way. Rachel and I was thinking about you girls running the HC1/2 and estimated about the time you would finish. Wish I could be at two places at the same time. You and Kathie did awesome with your PR!!!!

Dale ~ I am so glad you always came up to say hello. I would miss you if you hadn't. Seeing you put a smile on my face. THANKS for your support and friendship! I felt bad I didn't see Amy and your cute kids this time.

Rhett ~ Thanks! I was pretty scared the last mile and half fighting charlie horse. I will need to train smart the next month to get that PR at SGM. I'm so excited that you're BACK and hitting the miles again.

Marc ~ I sure miss you this year. Teena, Kelli and I were thinking about you the other day and Kelli marveled that you would come to Utah just to run. Can't wait to see you at SGM. Larry sends his regards. He sure likes you and asks about you all the time.

Julie ~ You're my heroine. I marvel at how fast you run under stressful conditions like no sleep and "perfume lady". PCM was my 16. Looking forward to 17 at SGM.

Paul ~ Rachel and I was looking for you but never saw you. So I knew you were way fast. You are simply amazing! Congrats on such a fast training run. I smell a sub-3 coming your way.

Rachel ~ I felt bad I didn't stay with you the last few miles. I just wanted to see if I could finish strong. You made it so fun for me the whole time. Congrats for running a great 2nd marathon in just 3 months. YOU ROCK!

Kelli ~ THANKS! Sure miss you.

Kathie ~ I'm glad I never got a full blown charlie horse. It was close though. I'm so excited for your PR at HC1/2. I think I might be 3rd in my division. There are some fast ladies who have just moved up in my AG.

Mike ~ THANKS! How's your xtraining and recovering? Hope you're good to go for SGM.

Amber ~ It was so funny how each time I saw you I was thinking about you just seconds beforehand at each of the marathons we ran this year. I had a feeling you would win PCM. I am so so so happy for your win. YOU ARE SO FAST and AWESOME and the funny thing is you didn't even expect to win it. I can't wait to see how well you will do at SGM. You need to change your goal to OQT...a sub-3 is just too conservative. Can't wait to see you at SGM.

Michell ~ THANKS! You had a great run with friends at HC as always.

Jon ~ THANK YOU! I'm so excited for your upcoming wedding. You and Kelly are a perfect match. SO HAPPY for you!

Teena ~ I have missed you. THANKS for the call. You did awesome at HC with your amazing PR and that fast time only means that you're right on target for breaking 3:20. SO SO SO EXCITED for you! LLL LLL LLL LLL LLL

P.S. You can call me anytime anywhere. It is NOT annoying! I LOVE IT when you call. You know I always love to hear from you. It is so funny. Larry set TWO alarms just in case and he laughed so hard when your call beat the alarms.

Timp & Kristi ~ THANKS!

Marion ~ Friends sure make running fun and so much easier. I must be a social runner.

Leslie ~ I am so glad you ran PC. You are a real trooper. It was so fun to see you on the course. I missed seeing Karen yet again. Can't wait to see you at SGM or sooner.

Mark ~ THANKS for the nice jingle! :)

Cute pictures! I love you standing on a curb to get as tall as your friends.

Looks like you were 6th in your AG.

From Andy on Tue, Aug 25, 2009 at 13:02:37 from 199.190.170.28

Way to go Smooth. Your course PR is because you are improving so much, not because of you skipped the other races.

From crockett on Fri, Aug 28, 2009 at 21:26:06 from 216.49.181.254

I neglected to add my congrats on PCM. As I was almost passed out on the grass at the finish line, I heard them announce your finish. Well done! At mile 20 after my very long stop, you were probably only a few minutes back. Congrats on the course PR.
