Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

THANKS EVERYONE for such a FUN RACE and PARTY afterwards!!!!

What great friends!!! Kelli picked up my packet, Bec picked me up at my house, all I had to do was show up to run this thing.  Behold, so did the cold wind!  I wish I had my running fleece; but all I had was my Boston jacket which was a bit heavy.  It kept me warm 'till mile 8.  In the process of taking it off, I had stopped the Garmin inadverdently for about 0.25 mile; so my splits are a little off.

What a delight to see so many friends and bloggers, RivertonPaul, Walter, Jose, Allen, Nancy and many others.  Marion and I pinned on our bibs in her car and hit the bathroom.  At the start, Marcie N. found me and we lined up together and chatted 'till "gun off" and so did she, the speedster.   My plan was to do this whole thing at marathon pace.  There was a nice tail wind and gentle descend so everyone went out fast.  I kept my pace within 10 sec of mp.  I chatted with a few runners about Boston who noticed my jacket.  We hit the first hill where I saw a gal in my age division.  I passed her as we crested the hill and made it a goal to keep her at far distance behind.  On the trail, a gal ran up to me and we chatted the whole way.  She's trying to BQ at SLC in 3 weeks.  It was fun to encourage her and give a few pointers.  That made running up the hills and wind bearable.  I was right on pace at the half way point.

I took a Gu at the aid station where we got off the trail, about mile 7.  BQ gal took off.  I gradually reeled her in and resumed talking.  We chugged up the S hill and was surprised at how easy my breathing was compare to hers.  With 5K to go, I decided to make the move to drop her.  My legs felt great so I ran those at 8:30 pace (about 1/2 marathon race pace).  After I crossed the finish, I kept jogging for another 2.25 miles.  I wanted to run 4 but was worried that my bro-in-law, Bec, Marion and Kelli had to wait plus I didn't want to get lost.   We had a great time visiting at the Pizzeria.  Hubby was on his way home from skiing so he took me home.  It was a perfect day!!!  It was a nice Sat. long run, no soreness to speak of today.

Question:  does anyone know if division winners get any prize besides a medal?  I didn't have my result card when I went to get my medal and the guy was hesitant to give it to me.  Also, my bro-in-law left without his medal, he took 2nd in his AG.  He flew in to run this thing and flew out the same night.  I wonder if they still have his medal.

Wow, Smooth! Congratulations on a great race and on winning your age group. And then to keep on running when it is done.... You are going to so rock in Boston.

From DonGardinero on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 11:43:09 from 75.162.98.167

AWESOME race, Smooth. Little miss speedy!!! I can just see you talking to BQ girl and then leaving her in your dust. Good thing the storm hit this morning and not yesterday. Congratulations on the first place AG award.

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 12:12:54 from 71.219.100.181

You had such an amazing race!!! I hardly got to talk to you about it so I was WAITING for that race report. It was great to chat with you after while we snarfed down pizza. Ashly thought you were the dang cutest thing and so nice. She says she is going to start running so she can meet nice people. GOOD PLAN!

I will check on your BIL's medal with Lisa at running group Tuesday. Gary Lew, right? Which age group? I am sure they have it. As far as 1st in age group, just a medal. Bummer!!! I was thrilled for my second place medal, but you have so many 1st place medals it is old news to you!!! You deserve money or some kind of fun prize.

From leslie on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 14:17:45 from 76.23.61.78

Great Race!!!! I do not understand how you can run that fast AND talk at the same time! You must have a natural talent for both skills, I am totally impressed!!!! Way to go, little first place in your AG girl!!!!!! Yeah, and what's up with the running after the race? You are tad bit crazy, but in a good way!!! Keep it up Smooth, Boston is around the corner!!

From Marion on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 14:40:49 from 71.219.50.2

Hi Smooth! You are so dang cool! It was so great to spend time with you yesterday! You had an awesome race! I really do want to be you when I grow up! :)

From Clay on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 16:32:51 from 67.182.209.60

Nice job Smooth, thats a good race with the conditions...

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 20:56:03 from 71.36.65.79

Maurine,

I was thinking about you and how your ultra went. I'm sorry it did not turn out how you would have wanted to. You remain an inspiration to me.

Dale!

THANKS for the kudos.

Kelli,

It was so fun visiting with Ashly and your family. What an awesome family!

Gary's in the 45-49 age group. That poor guy flew in from temp of 75 degree. He hadn't slept since Wed. Not only did he have to fight sleep deprivation, jet lag, cold, but the altitude and WIND too. If Boston wasn't hanging in the horizon, he would have gone skiing with my husband. But he had a good run, not his best race time; but was impressed with how well the course was marked. It'd be nice to get the medal and I can give it to him in Boston. THANKS!!!

As for the AG award prize, no big deal. I thought I saw some gift cards on the table. With other races, I usually get some $$OFF certificates which I rarely use anyway. I thought this race is a bargain for what we get. I highly recommend it! THANKS again for everything you do and for arranging the private room at the Pizzeria.

Leslie,

I KNOW I am CRAZY!!! People have told me so! When will I ever learn?

Clay,

THANKS! You didn't run this? What's your next race?

From Rhett on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 22:59:13 from 216.67.216.116

Smooth, great final tune up race. You are peaking at just the right time. What was your final time? Did you hit the goal of running it at MP or were you way too fast? Either way you were awsome. Congrats on the AG win. See you in Boston in 3 weeks!!!!!!

From MarcE on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 23:11:48 from 206.225.68.10

Awesome race, Smooth! You ran it like you wanted to..without pushing it too fast..and still ended up first in your Age Group! I'm surprised that that big-ole Boston Insgnia on the back of jacket, didn't light a fire under some of your competition! :)

Did Gary fly in all the way from Hong Kong to run a 1/2 marathon?! No way.

You done good, now enjoy some taper time. 22 days 'til Boston!

From jun on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 23:16:48 from 71.213.44.134

Nice job Smooooooooth! Fantastic race. Maybe someday I'll get to meet you and be inspired in person.

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 23:21:54 from 71.36.65.79

Rhett,

The official time was 1:56:42. According to rrca.org calculator, I need to run my half time at 1:57:03. So, I feel pretty good about it. I wasn't pushing it hard. I want to finish like I still have lots left in the tank. I think the key for me is to think of the Boston's half way at mile 18 instead of at Wellsley. Your training is going so well. Can't wait to see how your final tune up race goes. What's your plan for that race? See you in 3 weeks! I'm getting excited.

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 23:29:26 from 71.36.65.79

Marc,

Yeah, actually my big 'ole Boston insignia was a target. My competitor was in Boston and is running Boston and in the Slam too. It was probably just not her day.

Yes, Gary flew in from Hong Kong. He was actually on his way to New York. He made a 24hr lay-over to see his son at BYU and found out I was running a 1/2 and registered for it last minute. He is so excited for Boston. I can't wait to introduce you to him.

jun,

I hope to meet you in person someday soon. You seem like the nicest guy around here and I'd love to pick your brain. I'm sure YOU're the inspiring one.

From jj on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 23:45:09 from 71.32.224.37

Good job Smooth! Looks like you are right on plan for Boston. It was nice to see you again and to meet Larry. The whole Riverton Half experience was definitely a good time. I am green with envy that you are running Boston. One day I will get there!

From Amber on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 00:11:22 from 64.255.88.143

Woot Woot , Congratulations on your race, that's awesome! Way to pick it up at the end and still have energy to keep on going and adding a few miles. Sorry about the cold wind, what is with this weather? It's so playing tricks on us this year, I can hear the wind howling outside right now actually. Well now in Boston no matter what weather you get you'll blaze through and come out a CHAMP!!!!! You're so great and positive, , thanks for letting all us bloggers steal a little of your positive vibes!

have a great week

From RAD on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 01:17:41 from 67.166.99.8

Congrats Smooth!! I love to hang with you, I wish I could've run with you this race...but if I would've you probably would've had to pull me the last 12 miles :) After my motrin wore off I was miserable and could barely focus enough to stand up! However, I'm feeling TONS better today. You are such an awesome runner, and winning your AG and worry about your BIL getting his medal...what a saint!! (not just the latter-day kind either :) You are gonna ROCK Boston and bust your PR and re-qualify! Have a great running week and hopefully I'll see you again on some training runs in Lehi before Boston!!

From jona on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 10:36:02 from 69.27.13.147

CONGRATULATIONS Smooth!!!! What an awesome race. Lets see, 1st on a 10k, now 1st on a half marathon, we need to see the other race distances get the Smooth stamp! YOU ARE AWESOME!

From huans32 on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 11:28:49 from 138.64.2.76

Great job Smooth. We were really debating about coming just to cheer you in at the end. But were busy with other stuff.:(

From Bec on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 11:50:27 from 205.123.38.98

Great race Smooth. It was so fun to spend a little time with you and others from the blog. You will take Boston in a rage! Can you please spare me some of your energy?

From eric on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 16:29:46 from 64.17.195.191

Nice run! You seem to have quite a fanclub on here. I'm happy that you're having so much fun with your running. That's cool that Uncle Gary ran the race too. I probably would've gone skiing with Dad.

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 16:43:32 from 71.36.65.79

jj,

Yep, that was a very fun race. It was so nice to meet your wife at the pizzeria. Hope to see you in some group runs.

Amber,

You're the positive one here. Thanks for your sweet support.

Rachel,

I'm glad you're feeling better. THANK YOU so much for coming out to support us. I was so happy to see your smiling face and cute family at the finish. Your long legs are gonna kick some major trash at Ogden.

Jon,

You are too NICE! We missed you!

Mark,

THANKS! I know you have more important things to tend to right now. Can't wait to see you and Kristi on the 9th. Larry is canceling his meetings so he can come.

Bec,

You're the amazing fast girl here. Look who's talking. You ran 4 more after the race where you took titlles and hardware.

eric,

I have to take it while it lasts. I sure miss all you kids who are so so so far away. I think Gary regretted a little about not skiing especially when he found out David showed up at the lodge unexpectedly and also Chris went night snow boarding with his friends Fri night. O well, he didn't want to take any chance of getting hurt. 3rd time's a charm for Boston.
