Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Woke up feeling like I was run over by a dump truck.  Could hardly breath.  Hubby tried to make me stay home.  I told him I've been planning this 20 miler with Karen for weeks.  I HAVE to run it.  I carb-loaded properly last night, ate my last bowl of noodles while watching BYU beat NM...YAHOO!!!!   So AWESOME to watch Jimmer broke his own record of 52 pts!!! :)

I was ready to go at 6:30am.  Waited till 7:30 to pick up Karen.  I felt chills so took a Tylenol and brought a blanket with me in case I couldn't finish the run then I could just stay in the car with the blankie! :)

Got to JRP at Winchester to meet Kathie, Matt, LuzyLew and Teena!  We took off at a much faster pace than my lungs could handle, wheezing away while Luz and Kathie did all the talking.  At mile 3, before turning around, my SSF let me use her inhaler.  I think it helped.  So glad the weather was nice!  Got back to the car, took another puff of the inhaler, gu'd and drank an entire 8 oz. water.

From mile 7 on Karen ran w/ Matt looking so strong with Teena and Kathie leading the way.  Before mile 8, Karen turned back to run w/ us.  We used the rest room at the park.  When we got to around mile 11+ we kept looking for the others thinking they should have turned around already since they were planning on 18.  At mile 12.25ish Teena came running from behind,  I guess they had taken a detour.  Bid her goodbye while we went for another 0.75 before turning around.

We stopped at the turnaround (mile 13) to gu.  I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to finish and asked if anyone had any drugs.  Thankfully Luz had one Aleeve.  She graciously let me take it, saying I needed it worse than her.  THANKS Luz! :)  (So I was the drug-dealer on this part of the trail in West Valley, ha!)  Karen also let me drink her water b/c the gatorade just *burns* my throat.

All the hydration (from feeling sick) made me need to pee bad.  I ran as fast as I could the next mile where there was a park.  Alas, the bathroom was locked, so onto the next park as fast as I could before the bladder explode.  Whadaya know, that bathroom was locked too.  It wasn't until we got to the park at mile 17 that the bathroom was open.  Thankfully the Salt Lake Running Company also had two coolers of fluid there.  I filled up one of my two flasks w/ gatorade.

The knee and pelvis hurt the same whether I ran fast or slow.  So I took off hoping to finish strong w/ some MPs, thinking I would just run back at end of every mile to meet Luz and Karen.  I was getting into a good rhythm so I never did turn around.  I took off my fuel belt at the car and was going to go back for Luz and Karen; when I saw Teena driving up.  I felt bad that I didn't stay w/ them; but took comfort that they had each other to run with, sorta.  We stretched while drinking chocolate milk and slimfast to aid in recovery.  My only regret is that I didn't get to talk to Kathie at all.  I wanted to hear all about her Lake to Lake Relay.  And I never got any SSF time!  Stink!!!

Well, what I learned from this run is that I could never been able to finish without the company of Luz and Karen and the help of drugs!  :)  THANK YOU Luz and Karen!  You have no idea how much you helped me!  Just love you to pieces! :) :) :)

20 miles in 3:04:54.  AP: 9:14.  Splits: 9:28, 9:10, 9:03, 8:51, 9:00, 9:01, 9:23, 9:27, 9:29, 9:46, 9:47, 10:03, 9:54, 9:39, 9:05, 8:38, 8:50, 8:47, 8:43, 8:37.  Stopped at mile 6 & 13 to gu; mile 8 and 17 to void!   Drank a total of 21 oz gatorade, 16 oz. water on the run, a can of slimfast at finish.  Now icing the knee!  Going to veg in front of the TV watching BYU play SDS tonight! :)

I cannot believe you pulled this off! Seriously, I have never known a woman more determined or as strong and tough as you are.

However, the lack of SSF time does mean that we need to do something this week. That is if you get some rest!!!!!!!!

I love you. You are more than ready for Boston. I hope you realize that now and take it easy until then (or at least until you start feeling better).

I love you!

Nice job today! You looked awesome running in! :)

From Kathie on Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 20:10:25 from 174.23.136.91

Thank you for letting me steal Teena away from you. She was such a big help to me.

You are so tough to finish your run!!!! You will do great in Boston even if you don't run another step!

From watchmerun on Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 20:40:33 from 24.10.152.45

Sorry to hear that you were so sick through the run. You are much tougher than I am. I would have stayed in bed!

How many people wake up feeling like they have been run over by a dump truck then go out and run 20 miles. Such amazing dedication.

From RivertonPaul on Sun, Mar 13, 2011 at 14:06:14 from 174.253.165.230

In my humble opinion you are way too tough. I'm glad you have the 20 miler under your belt so psychologically you never have to question your dedication or persistence, but now build on that by getting physically recovered and you will be even stronger (and a healthy faster) and running will again be joyous. Smooth please don't get seriously hurt like me.

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 13, 2011 at 21:37:35 from 67.2.111.136

Tim ~ THANKS!

Andy ~ It wasn't dedication, really, it's about keeping promises! :)

Paul ~ You have no idea how much I value your opinion and your sincere concern for my health (or sanity). Seriously, my son Eric said the same thing. When he saw the pics you posted, he was very sad and said: "This (your serious injury) could have been prevented." Then when I foolishly ran fast or long, he'd say: "You could end up with chronic tendonosis like your friend, Paul."

So, my friend, I am going to quit gambling with this old body before it completely falls apart!

Thank you Paul! from the bottom of my heart, I really do appreciate your friendship and support! :)

Dear Smooth, Fast, Strong, and Crazy;

I hope you are getting some rest.

By the way, I think I saw your daughter, son-in-law, and hapa haole grand baby on Sunday at Solitude? At least I saw a woman that looked like a younger version of you with her family.

From Nancy on Mon, Mar 14, 2011 at 21:31:58 from 76.27.19.206

I am amazed that you could run that far feeling so sick. You are one dedicated runner.

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 15, 2011 at 11:20:00 from 67.2.70.168

Fly ~ Nope, that would not be my daughter and her family on the slopes! I chatted with them via web cam on Sunday. The only *white* thing I saw was the baby blessing outfit Baby Jett was wearing!

I am dying to take the grandchildren skiing. But they live in Texas! Sigh!

Nancy ~ thank you for the kind words! My hubby was NOT amazed. Seriously, I had doubt that I could run that many miles while so sick! I am not sure if it's mind over matter or perhaps the help from my running partners that did it! At any rate, I loved it...perfect weather, good company, great conversations! Now, trying to convey that to my hubby is a different story!
