Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

20 Weeks to Boston

Schedule says this is a recovery week, today's run s'posed to be 7 mi w/ 10X100 m strides.  Nah, I think I'll repeat week 20 and take the recovery week on week 16 (Dec 22-27) when the holiday would force a recovery week.  This will give me a gradual 3 weeks build up then 2 weeks stepback over the holidays.

Feeling not as rested this morning, but the weather is perfect for a nice run.  Ran 8 miles same route as last Monday and see how many miles I could maintain at sub-9.  Here goes:

1) 8:54 (0.5 mi of downhill)

2) 8:59 (some down and some uphill, keeping effort even)

3) 9:55 (uphill and elevation gain of 144' in 0.4 mi, steady effort)

4) 8:50 (heading east, rolling terrain)

5) 8:44 (2 seconds shy of tempo pace)

6) 8:54 (getting lazy)

7) 8:39 (hitting tempo pace)

8) 8:23 (tempo pace finished strong)

8 miles in 1:11:22 (last Mon was 1:10:15).  Average pace: 8:55.  HR: 170.  Not quite a tempo run, but a good run with 7 miles at marathon pace.

Your "getting lazy" is my miracle pace :) You are an amazing runner!

From Smooth on Mon, Dec 01, 2008 at 15:53:59

THANKS Marion!!! That's very nice of you to say. I used to think I will NEVER EVER be able to run a 9 min mile. Well, there are still days when I could barely run a 10:00 pace.

You're working hard at reaching your goals. It won't be long before you hit your miracle pace. I just know it. You're doing great.

Thanks Smooth! I needed that. I feel like such a slug, but I am really loving running, even at super slow paces. I'll keep the faith :) THANK YOU!!!

From Rhett on Mon, Dec 01, 2008 at 16:44:33

What is your goal marathon pace for Boston, Smooth? Looks like you are almost ready to run it. Great job.

From Teena on Mon, Dec 01, 2008 at 17:10:19

What a GREAT run!! That is AWESOME!!!

Smart thinking on your recovery week.

Tell me again what training schedule you are using.

LOVE YOU!!

GREAT JOB!!! You are such a strong runner!

From DonGardinero on Mon, Dec 01, 2008 at 19:24:47

Keep it up Smooth. You're going to do great at Boston. All of your runs sound so easy and enjoyable when I read your posts. You're just too good!!!

Way to go smooth! I think you are smart to switch it up and think ahead.

Are you trying to BQ at Boston again?

From Smooth on Mon, Dec 01, 2008 at 23:34:46

Marion --

Yeah, keep the faith. You know what running is all about...finding joy and loving it.

Rhett --

My Boston'08 time shows that I ran an average pace of 8:57 in 26.49 miles. So to PR in '09 my marathon pace need to be 8:55 or faster. No, I'm far from being ready. Hey, I figure we have 19 week and 6 days to get there, right? What's your goal for Boston'09?

Teena --

I love you too!!! How's your workout today? I am using Pete Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning 24/55 schedule. I used his 18/55 last year and worked very well for me. I'm learning as I go. Tell me what you think, no holding back.

Kelli --

THANKS!!! You're strong AND fast!!! Most days I'm really a wimp. I think the positive vibes from our Saturday's run spilled over to today.

Dale --

Thank you. Easy and enjoyable sounds good to me. I am all for doing the minimum required, effort and mileage wise.

Kathie --

Yes, that's the plan. If I re-BQ at Boston'09; I can just "play" at all the other marathons in 2009. What do you think?

From Teena on Tue, Dec 02, 2008 at 12:29:23

Smooth,

No holding back ... I think YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and can do whatever you set your mind too! You will own Boston, just like you did last year!!
