Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

28 days 'till Boston!!!

Sure hope I won't feel like this when I wake up on Patriot's Day.  Almost abandoned my run 3 times.  Other than the wind, it was a nice Spring day.  My left ITB and vastus medialis were screaming for me to stop right off the bat.  Normally it feels better after couple miles of warm up.  The pain lasted for 5 miles!!!  My strides were clunky and lifeless.  Arrrghhh!  Mile 9 was uphill and I was surprised that the legs actually felt good and then the last mile home (flat) I opened up the stride a bit and felt much better.

TT: 1:38:26 AP 9:51  (perfect recovery pace)  Just for fun comparison ~ Rhett ran 20 miles this morning in 1:24:xx, 14 minutes faster and twice as much miles!  I'm pathetic!!!  :(  :-D

****I'm trying to decide what to do with my runs this week.  I have an important duty to fulfill on Sat.  making it not conducive for my last long run.  Here's what's Pfitz has me do:

Tue.  VO2 max 11 mi

Wed.  MLR 14 mi

Thu.  GA + Speed 8 mi

Fri.  Recovery 5 mi

Sat.  Long run 20 mi

Week's total mileage : 68 mi

Next week's mileage is 55-57 w/ long run of 17.

Feel like I need to stick w/ the plan, follow Rhett's mantra of "nothing stupid" from now 'till Boston.   Hmmm, what to do???

I think the runs start to feel like this at the point of your peak . . . . just hang in there, you are almost tapering! Great way to stick it out anyway even though your body wasn't feelin' it! Holy Cow Rhett is smokin' fast! (even though his blog now says 2:24 which makes more sense:), , but still super fast) As far as your weekend predicament, , , can you switch your Friday and Sat runs and go long Fri?

Yay for 28 days till BOSTON!!! WAHOO!! you will soon be enjoying the city by the sea, , , yummy seafood, great running, fun! I'm sure you will feel light and fresh Patriot's Day!!!!!!!!!! no worries :)

We gotta get those bad runs out of the way early. Take care of yourself for the next 4 weeks. Don't hurt yourself, and give yourself some rest days in between your workouts. See you in 26 days!!!!!

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 16:52:51 from 174.23.198.220

Amber ~ That's what my hubby wants me to do. I am just afraid if I don't have a recovery day before my long run would be bad. BUT I did it 2 weeks ago and was fine. I just want to have a GREAT run for my last long run and trying to simulate the Boston course as much as possible! I may just wait to see how the body feels Friday morning! Thanks for the encouragement. I really appreciate all the wonderful things you do and say! I just LOVE you!!! :)

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 16:54:30 from 174.23.198.220

Marc ~ I can't begin to tell you how EXCITED and HAPPY I am that you're coming to Boston. Can hardly wait to see you in 26 days!!!

From Andy on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 18:28:42 from 198.60.114.178

I would do the 5 mile recovery run on Thursday, long run on Friday then do a few nice and easy miles on Saturday (only do the strides if they feel good). Today doesn't really count as a recovery run so you are going to have 3 hard days in a row. You will need a break on Thursday. Don't be afraid to shorten the warm up and cool down for your VO2 run tomorrow. It's alright if you are a little short of 68 this week. You have put enough extra miels in the past 14 weeks to compensate.

From Rhett on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 18:31:40 from 74.32.222.202

Rhett just can't type! For some reason when I go to put in 2 hours my mind says to me, there is no way I ran for that long and I often accidentally type 1 hour.

Smooth, you are so ready for Boston, so don't do anything stupid and you are going to have a fantastic race.

From Annie on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 20:20:13 from 97.117.68.12

Smooth,

Thank you so much for always checking up on me and offering encouraging words! I have been a little MIA lately so I wanted to say hello and wish you well for the week! Can't wait to actually meet you!

From Teena Marie on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 22:33:38 from 174.52.45.85

Hey SSF!!!

Okay, call me a huge baby but I would completely skip your thursday run and swap Friday and Saturday. I think your ITB will thank you for the extra rest day. I would be more concerned with how your body feels than the miles at this point. You are ready!!! Seriously.

When are we going to work on that ITB?

I miss and love you!!!

You amaze me everyday. :)

From Scott Wesemann on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 01:19:07 from 75.162.81.238

Smooth- I don't know much about running, but maybe you just need a little rest. Good luck with that knee. I'm excited for you (Boston).

From leslie peterson on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 09:11:46 from 174.52.158.81

I love Rhett's advice! You will be great as always my little friend. Keep up the awesome training and I hope your ITB calms down!

From Snoqualmie Ridge Runner on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 11:38:23 from 67.168.154.220

Smothie, don't take no stinkin' chances...rest it up if needed...if you are injured you can't run...rest it up a bit...you can skimp on a few miles here and there...

From DonGardinero on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 13:22:14 from 75.162.167.197

Oh Smoothie, I can't even look at your workouts anymore. They make ME feel tired. You are one tough cookie. Keep it up, but don't overdo it.

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 14:47:47 from 67.172.229.125

Nice work stickin' with it! I also like Rhett's advice, sprinkled with Teena's. Your body needs the rest and you are more than prepared! However, listening to your body in this high mileage is the most important for NO injuries.

From Kathie on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 16:20:04 from 63.248.105.188

Nice run, I agree with everyone, listen to your body...it will tell you what it needs.

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:11:16 from 174.23.198.220

Andy ~ I'm going to do the runs on the days you suggested. You know I highly respect and appreciate your advice. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Rhett ~ Yes, nothing stupid. I'm going to cut out the P90X workouts that I started the last couple of weeks.

Annie ~ I can't wait to meet you in person as well. I was looking for you at Sophia's baptism. :)

SSF ~ You are NOT a baby especially not a HUGE one! :) I will run recovery on Thurs. I think I just need to do it slow and short. My Mon workout is always painful when I rested totally on Sunday. I'm worried that since Boston is on Monday, I'll feel that way.

Can't wait to see you on Thu and you can work your magic on my ITB! :) LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

Scott ~ Yes, I do need more rest. I'm tired all the time. See, you do know alot about running!

Leslie ~ Thanks! I'm hoping the tapering will let the ITB calms down. Just need to survive this week.

Jeff ~ Thanks for the advice! No rest for the wicked! :D. I'll rest after this week.

Dale ~ You make me laugh! Your training is going good. Keep up the good work!

Rachel ~ I know. Why am I so addicted to running?

Kathie ~ I've been thinking about you. How was your run? Heading over to your blog now! :)

From Teena Marie on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 00:47:46 from 174.52.45.85

SSF --

NOT too busy for you!!!! EVER!!!! I have to leave for work around 11:40 tomorrow and don't get home until 7:30ish but could meet you before or after!

From Smooth on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 00:50:33 from 174.23.198.220

SSF ~ You are TOO NICE! You have enough to do already! I have Presidency Mtg in the morning; then lotsa phone calls in the afternoon. THANK YOU for the offer. I LOVE YOU SOOOO MUCH!

From Teena Marie on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 00:51:36 from 174.52.45.85

Not as much as I love you! ;)

From Teena Marie on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 00:52:06 from 174.52.45.85

Btw, how are your legs feeling this evening?

From Smooth on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 00:55:49 from 174.23.198.220

The left ITB has this stinging sensation. The pelvic region is tight and sore. I'm able to walk normal though, I think!

From Teena Marie on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 00:58:30 from 174.52.45.85

Please be careful on your MLR tomorrow. Did you foam roll, stretch, and ice today?

You know I worry about you! Even though you are as tough as nails! (Sometimes that is the problem!!!!)

From Smooth on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 01:14:08 from 174.23.198.220

Iced once, stretched a little, NO foam roll. I will be careful. No worry. I will be fine! See you Thu and then I will be good to go for my last long run! :) You're DA TOUGH ONE!!! :)

From Teena Marie on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 01:16:12 from 174.52.45.85

Seriously SSF -- BE CAREFUL!!!! We are too close to Boston to be taking risks. I love you!!! Sleep well!!!!
