Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

DA Water-Proof-Nut'n-Stops-Us-Red-Hot-Pink-Chicks-Crazy-Runners ROCKS!!!

We did it!!!  Marion and Luzy Lew, Maurine and Leslie, Rachel and I, 6 brave RHP chicks met at the JRP this morning.  It was snowing and wind blowing from the north...but nut'n stops us nuts.  We weren't the only nuts on the trail.  There were a group of 3 guys and a group of 2 gals and one solo guy on the trail braving the cold, snow and slush.

Luzy Lew and Rachel were the lead pack.  I warmed up with the others.  The spirit was so positive and cheerful.  Almost a mile into the run, I took off to catch Rachel and Luzy.  We then ran all the way to the top,  the wind was pretty fierce.  At the turn around by Camp William, Luzy showed us some cool stretches for the piriformis.  On the way down I was worried about the slippery;  Luzy gave me a tip on how to "slide".  The rest of the RHPCs marked the snow where they had turned around (about mile 3).  We soon saw them about a mile from the car.  At the car I took 1 Gu and drank water.

Running south with the wind in our back was good.  I love the chatting and the miles just flew.  We got back to the parking lot and found Maurine keeping warm in the car.  Conference had just started.  Rachel and I stretched a little.  She left us with the yummy muffins, organges and OJ and had to go home.  About 35 min later, the rest of the RHPCs got back.  We had hot chocolate with Marion's whip cream, muffins, bagels &  cream cheese.  We visited in Leslie's warm car and laughed our heads off.

THANK YOU for running with me today!!!  I wouldn't have braved the storm this morning if it weren't for you wonderful ladies.  I had a great time.   I will always treasure the memory of this run, the last long run before Boston.  I forgot to restart my Garmin at the mile 5 turn around.  Going off Rachel's, we ran 17.25 miles.  Sorry Luzy we MADE YOU run more than you planned.

SMOOTH YOU ARE THE BOMB!! And yes, we are NUTS. I got home and looked outside and said "What was I thinking?!?" However, I feel great now - a good run and great company. I just feel a little cheated that I had to race home and didn't get the whipped cream and bagels...oh, and the chatting :) We'll have to do it again sometime after Boston when I can hang out afterward and don't have to run off to work :( Sounds like it was a great time!!

You're right about remembering this one, it will be my "I braved the snow - in April!" run. Thanks for getting us all together you are an amazing woman!!

From Bec on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 15:51:50 from 67.177.35.60

one word, "WOW!" I can't believe you did 17 in weather conditions like that. I have to hand it to you Smooth, way to go! You are ready for Boston, and you ARE completely NUTS for braving that. Any weather Boston hands to us, we will be ready. Unless it's really hot, that would just kill me.

From luzylew on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 16:16:00 from 69.169.165.206

You are so amazing. Thanks for letting me "tag along" with you and RAD. I'm inspired.....P.S. I won't hold a grudge for that extra 2.5, it was worth it.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 16:27:57 from 97.117.61.168

That was some awesome weather and we raised our nutty rating by at least 2 percent today!

So great to get to visit with you. I can't wait for your Boston run.

From Marion on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 17:40:38 from 71.213.124.146

that quote is going on our RHPC's t-shirt. I am going to call the people who made the riverton ones. We need a good "don't get chicked" quote for the back. :)

thank you so much for coming this morning! Your hot water was so HOT! I need one of those thermoses!

Next year, I am going to be able to keep up with the speedy chicks!!!

From DonGardinero on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 17:43:17 from 75.162.181.66

Awesome run, Smooth. Enjoy your taper.

From Rhett on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 19:10:47 from 216.67.216.116

I've said it before, but you Utah runners are a breed of your own, out there in that horrible weather. Boston is going to be beautiful for you no matter what the weather brings. Nice run Smooth.

From leslie on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 19:16:52 from 76.23.61.78

Who would have thought 6 crazy girls could have so much fun running in the cold and wind and snow?? Thanks for such a fun time at the tailgate party! I am glad to have you and the rest of the RHP chicks as friends!!! I can't wait for the next long run! I wish we would have had our little Kelli girl with us though....

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 20:21:16 from 71.36.85.29

Rachel,

It was so good of you to come all the way with all that great food and run with us. I had a ball! You are the funnest running partner. The tail gate party would have been more funner and sillier (are those real words?) if you could have stayed. On our next run, we will have to have humus, veggies and bread afterwards. Long live Da Long Legs Princess and Star of Egypt!!!!

Bec,

Who's talking? You RACED in that brutal weather! Yes, we are ready for any Nor'easter in Boston...just not heat wave...we would melt. CONGRATS on taking home hardware on your back-to-back half marathons, you cute speedy angel, you!

Luzy,

I feel like we're kindred souls. You are amazing for toughing it out. I can't believe all you had was a sip of gatorade the entire 17 miler. I'm glad you weren't too bugged by our misguided extra miles. That means you'll come run with us again, right? There are lotsa beautiful homes right in my neighborhood. It's 6 miles to the mouth of American Fork Canyon, less than 4 miles to the JRP, 2 mile to the base of the SunCrest Mountain. Don't you love seeing those deer and pelicans on the JRP. That's the migratory path and we see lotsa interesting birds here. You will love living here. Oh, Costco and Target are just 5 miles away; not to mention Kneaders is within walking distance (1 mile).

Maurine,

That was not enough time to visit with you. I wanted to pick your brain about ultra-marathoning and trail running. I also wanted to hear about your Europe trip and your fabulous Italian and how Twilight is doing. But we were sort of listening to Conference. We need to get together more often.

Marion,

The quote that says: "We are water-proof-dye-in-da-blue-nut'n-gonna-stop-us-red-hot-pink-chicks-crazy-runners"??? Wow, that's gonna take up the whole shirt. I'll have to wear it NOT tucked in! Don't get chicked on the back is way cool, Sasha would be thrilled! Hey, you're already a speedy chick...no waiting for next year.

Rhett,

I am going over to your blog and check on your Half today. How'd you do? I hope you had a fabulous race!

Dale,

THANKS!!! You were one brave warrior today running the WRC Half. WAY TO CONQUER the elements and come out with a 15 in course PR.

Leslie,

THANKS for being such a great trooper and come out in that nasty weather and brave the storm with 5 other crazy girls. We had so much fun! We are doing it again next Sat, right? It was so fun "crashing" and "thawing" in your car. If it weren't for you all coming, I would have stayed home. I'm glad we did it and I feel great!

From Teena on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:11:17 from 67.177.20.13

Oh Smooth!! What an AWESOME last long run before Boston. I am so so so glad that you had such a wonderful time. Plus, I didn't see any comments about any pain ... AWESOME!!!

Hope you enjoyed conference and are relaxing while the boys are at Priesthood. Wait ... you have been cooking, huh? Find some time to relax, will you?

I love you!!

Hey Teena, the beloved!!!

THANKS for checking in on me. No pain. May be it will show up tomorrow?? Yep, I have guests coming tomorrow morning. They're Hong Kong mission friends coming from California. So, while the boys are at Priesthood, I'm frantically doing food prep for tomorrow's lunch and dinner. I love you and miss you so so so much!

From Kathie on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:20:51 from 207.155.176.10

Wow I really do need to show up for one of your parties just so I can have the fancy name! You really should run the Wasatch Back that is the way this race is for 24+ hours!!!!

From Teena on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:21:14 from 67.177.20.13

Nope ... the pain will not show up tomorrow. You are in PERFECT shape, you had a great long run, and it's magic time!! No pain ... you'll see!! :)

Have so much fun with your friends tomorrow and tell President hello for me! :)

From Marion on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:24:56 from 71.213.124.146

Smooth- I think I am going to have my brother make the RHPC (bold on the front of the shirt) out of the saying. so the letters RHPC, will be made out of your super cool phrase ;) I'll send you the jpeg when he is done with it :)

From Marion on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:25:41 from 71.213.124.146

Ooo- maybe the saying on the back will be, "Don't get Red Hot Pink CHICKED!!!"

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:29:40 from 71.36.85.29

Kathie,

Yes, you HAVE to come and run with us! You and Kimmie will be so FUN!!! I would do anything to have you and Kimmie run with me.

I'm thinking about the Wasatch Back. A friend has asked me to join their van. I have Utah Valley the week before; so I'm not sure.

Teena,

OK, No pain it is! We need to get together for lunch sometime before Boston.

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:35:11 from 71.36.85.29

Marion,

You are ONE brilliant pink speedy chick! I'm still laughing about the "preference"!

What's the shelf-life for those cool canister of whip cream? You think I can put it in my 72 hour emergency kit? It's going in my ski lunch for sure, hot chocolate will never be the same w/o whip cream.

From Marion on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:40:55 from 71.213.124.146

It's good stuff! My mom wanted to know if I dusted your whipping cream with a little cocoa to finish it off. She was disappointed in me for skipping the finishing touch :( Next time y'all are getting the gourmet treatment! See, I am trying to fatten you all up so I can keep up with you.

You'll have to ask Larry his "preferences" ;)

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 23:20:45 from 71.36.85.29

Marion, you forgot to "gourmet" up our hot cocoa? I LOVE your mom already. I can probably talk to her "eye to eye" and she would still feel so TALL!!!

Yes, Larry laughed HIS head off with the "preferences" reference. ;-D

From RAD on Sun, Apr 05, 2009 at 00:13:24 from 67.166.99.8

I am so loving the RHPC group! I'm so glad I got to meet you lovely ladies, my life wouldn't be nearly as fun filled without you!! I want to see that shirt too.

From Kelli on Sun, Apr 05, 2009 at 16:15:13 from 71.219.95.20

Great job ladies, I missed you all! i thought about you out in that storm all morning. You guys are NUTS!

From MarcE on Sun, Apr 05, 2009 at 21:34:33 from 206.225.68.108

Nothin' like a warm car to get into after a long run in the cold, fierce elements. The hot chocolate and muffins sound awesome. You and your friends are all nuts! :) 2 weeks til Boston!!!

From MissFIT on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 11:46:44 from 163.248.142.142
