Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Extra sleep + blue sky/sunshine + recovery run + adrenaline from barking dogs and one rude construction worker = Hurry up miles!

11 MLR in 1:38:17.  AP: 8:56.  Splits: 9:39, 9:17, 8:53, 9:18, 9:17, 9:03, 8:33, 8:48, 8:31, 8:35, 8:18.

Here's the incident:  I ran past a barricade on Bull River Rd.  I have done it many times the last couple weeks.  The barricade blocks off the section of Bull River Rd access to SR92 (which is being widened).  That section of Bull River Rd is about 0.25 mi and totally accessible to the residents there.   As I got close to the SR92 access area, I noticed 2 guys w/ their truck and back hoe parked to the side.  As I ran past them, the guy in the backhoe yelled:  "Hey, this is a construction zone!  No thru traffic!"  Felt like yelling back:  HELLO!  Do I look like a car to you?  But I didn't, instead I made a U-turn which is what I would do anyway.  About a mile later, I heard some rumbling engine coming from behind me.  It was the orange back hoe!!!  I turned my head and saw the guy staring down at me.  His buddy was following him in the truck.  I picked up the pace and saw him ganging up on me.  I sprinted to the next intersection, crossed the road and turned down the street.  He was still waiting at the stop sign....whew!!!...never been chased by a backhoe before!!!

Your entry made me smile... I can't believe anyone would every get angry at you! So glad the back hoe didn't get you!

From Bec on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 17:21:46 from 76.23.55.210

I can see it now... HAHAHA! You make me smile. Those men were really jealous hat you can run and they can't huh?

From LuzyLew on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 17:37:30 from 208.187.197.42

That's a new speed technique-- getting chased by a backhoe. I hate when that happens--It was a gorgeous day outside though (although the air....). You know say the nicest, most supportive things to me about Boston, and then I come here and find out that you are running 11 mile mid-week runs....You're are such tough lady. Those guys in the backhoe had NO IDEA who they were dealing with.

From Rhett on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 17:43:38 from 74.41.249.102

Good thing you are so darn speedy Smooth. Nice way to get in some extra speed work.

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 18:30:11 from 71.219.89.82

You are so flippin' cute! I can just see the back hoe chasing you. You have been chased by dogs and snow plows and garbage trucks, if I remember correctly!

Scott and I did many of our long runs this summer/fall on a "closed" road and we said the same thing, we are not a car! But we always got very friendly looks and shout outs from the construction guys, not mean ones!

Have a good day! I read 11 miles and can not believe that is not your long run. You are a mileage maniac, but you are doing so well and I think you are getting FASTER, don't ya think?

From timp on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 19:14:20 from 68.164.215.197

that is a funny story SMooth - :)

From Teena Marie on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 19:56:37 from 174.52.45.85

You could have totally taken them both!!!! :)

AWESOME run!!!!

Love you and can't wait to see you tomorrow!! :)

From Kathie on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 20:07:27 from 71.36.31.165

How rude!

Great miles though!

From auntieem on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 20:20:23 from 24.17.177.218

Scary! Way to outrun them.

From RAD on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 22:12:17 from 67.172.229.125

Next time, I'll run with you and I'll tell them where they can take their big nasty attitude! No one chases my Smooth in a Backhoe!! :)

From Smooth on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 23:24:08 from 174.23.232.65

Lori ~ That guy must have gotten off the wrong side of the bed!

Bec ~ Yep, that's it! They're constipated!

Luz ~ That backhoe was idling too when I ran by...making stinky air! Don't let my midweek miles scare you. It's an experiment. Boston is still an experience! Gotta think FUN FUN FUN, ok?

Rhett ~ Great idea! At races I shall run like being chased by some mad backhoe!!!

Kelli ~ These two guys must be UDOT people. I think they were lost. Because where I ran was not under construction. The construction is on the major highway. So they were probably ticked that they got blocked. I love running on "closed" road b/c it means NO traffic for me. Yep, been chased by dogs, snow plows, and nearly hit by a garbage truck.

Not sure if the crazy mileage is making me faster. It sure makes me tired and consequently require more sleep.

timp ~ Not funny at the time. I was running mad!

SSF ~ Easily take on the backhoe...the truck's a different story. See ya soon!

Kathie ~ Should have challenged the backhoe guy on a race! I don't think he likes to be chicked. :)

auntieem ~ The 800 repeats comes in handy!

Rachel ~ Wish you were my bodyguard today! :)

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 01:16:55 from 71.219.89.82

You are getting faster, you just have not realized it! Think about how you almost PR'd while not even trying!

From Scott Wesemann on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 02:23:31 from 75.162.72.176

They could never catch you Smooth :) Nice miles today. It was so nice out there today, and I'm glad someone got to enjoy it. :)

From vinh on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 07:40:40 from 75.77.22.187

Awesome run Smooth despite those outrageous construction workers. Lucky I wasn't there...I would have made them get on their knees and apologize! They had nothing better to do than harass a sweet lady.

From JulieC on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 14:52:00 from 65.100.255.195

Oh my. You should write Runner's World. I can see the title now "Increase Speed, Run in a Construction Zone". Wow. And I thought my 4 dog run yesterday was enough. I really need to buy some mace. Glad you "got away". Geez.

From AmberG on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 14:56:42 from 64.255.89.12

Wowsers GIRL! It's a good thing you can outrun a backhoe! :) I love all your comments too. . . ditto

From MrsFIT on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 16:19:20 from 205.127.241.18

You know in some culture being chased by heavy machinery is considered a compliment ;)

Smooth can outrun a back hoe - Woot Woot!

From Mack on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 19:08:52 from 71.111.182.118

Hilarious!!! I'm still chuckling.

Now THAT is a new one! Being chased by a backhoe! Insane really, what is wrong with those guys?..but that is one form of speedwork, hmmm I wonder if it would work in the last 10k of a marathon?
