Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Had a huge Tucano's dinner at the S.O.A.R. banquet last night...such a pig...but the food was so good and I didn't have lunch.    Woke up at 2 am, tried to fall back to sleep.  Needless to say, didn't start the run at JRP 'till 6:04 am (an hour later than planned). Schedule calls for 18 miles @ 10:06.  I could either cut the run short or run faster.    Did the same thing for the 18 miler two weeks ago by walking and drinking 7oz. every 2 miles).  T. was in the mid 60's.  There was a light breeze just as the sun peeked over the mountain.  Saw few ducks diving and skimping over the river.

Walked part of the uphill.  Saw RAD and Bec on my way down at my mile 5.3.  Figured I was under a mile ahead of them and they would catch up so I didn't turn to run back up with them.  Stopped at the car (mile 10) to refill the flasks with gatorade, ate one energy bar with 1/2 bottle of water.  No time to waste,  continued south for 8 more.

I only glanced at the watch to see the time so that I could get the run done in time for Y.C.  The ITB started to bug around mile 13.  Concentrated on form and pushed thru the pain.  Saw Rick roller blading by and one of the Grimley boys and his wife running.  Doused my hat and shirt with water at mile 16 at the camp ground fountain.  The ITB felt better with faster pace and only felt it tugging on the rolling part of the trail.   Made it back to the car to see RAD and Bec chatting and didn't even look like they had run 14.   They had lots of 8:30 paces.  It would have killed me to run with them.   No time to stretch or visit.  Drank the rest of the gatorade.  Total fluid consumption:  86 oz.

Just as I got in the house at 9:15, the phone rang.  Hubby said the youth were finished with their breakfast and waiting for me.  ARRGGH!  I thought I wasn't due to speak 'till 10am.   Took a record-breaking fast shower and headed over to the Stake Center in 20 min.  Whew!  hubby killed some time by answering some questions that the youth were dying to find out about him.

18 miles in 2:50:56 (not counting the couple of min. to refill the fuel belt), almost 8 min PR from two weeks ago.   AP:  9:29.  Splits:  9:58, 9:33, 9:39, 10:24, 11:13, 8:57, 9:24, 9:23, 9:18, 9:23, 9:26, 9:00, 9:34, 9:04, 9:22, 9:11, 9:14, 8:43

Teena,

How'd you know they were laughing? :) K, I will PM you our numbers. Yes, I'm registering the DNews. Pres. wants me to do that one. He wants to be there to cheer Gary and check out the bank's booth. I think he's the selfish one! :) We can go out for breakfast after the race, may be? LLL LLL LLL LLL LLL LLL

From Teena on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 16:25:40 from 67.177.20.13

How about instead you come over to the parade site my relatives get every year and have some of the breakfast they cook up? The whole family will be there. Although my guess is the Prez and Gary will be wanting some Little America ... probably Lowell too! :)

From Teena on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 16:26:24 from 67.177.20.13

We'd love to come over to see the fam. I miss your munchkins so so so bad! Not sure what Gary's plan is. He's running with some friends. But I'd love for you to meet him. He "lurks" around the blog and I am sure he'd love to meet you in person.

I think YOU'RE DA FUNNY ONE!!! LOVE YOU!

From Teena on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 17:00:56 from 67.177.20.13

PERFECT THEN!!!!

I will add three to our head count ... just in case Gary wants to come.

I am so excited!!! (And, of course, the kids will be as well!)

From Bec on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 17:10:28 from 67.177.35.60

What a morning! You ran 18 and then rushed to the Y.C.? You are amazing, I bet the youth loved you. You looked very strong today when we passed by you. I would have never known that dang IT was giving you problems today. That lame leg!

From RAD on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 17:17:28 from 67.166.99.8

Wow, Smooth! What can I say? Very impressive run and a talk on top of that. Great job and keep showing up all us youngsters.

Look forward to seeing you at DesNews.

From DonGardinero on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 20:27:23 from 75.162.191.30

WOW smoothie, you are seriously getting faster and faster. I'm sensing a PR at SGM!!! What a great run you had.

You should do Bryce Canyon next year.

From MrsFIT on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 21:11:43 from 24.2.68.35

I think I held my breath the whole time I read your entry. YOu can sure pack a day in.

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 11:53:08 from 71.36.86.59

Bec,

Funny how "deadline" pushes me. Still I wouldn't have been able to run with you and Rachel. I really wanted to though if I had started earlier.

The ITB bugged on the south end. Weird how it comes and goes. Could definitely feel it after running the downhills.

The youth in our Stake are amazing. I can tell they have been well taught.

Rachel,

It was hard to run solo. Wish I could run your pace. Hey, hope to see you at DNews after the race. I heard it's a crowded one. Have never done the 10K, only the marathon the last two years.

Maurine,

Can't wait to see you. Man alive, you had a "work marathon" this weekend!

Dale,

Funny how "deadline" made me hurry me. Glad I made it in the nick of time. I'm hoping to BQ at SGM; a PR would be icing on the cake.

Kristi,

We should! You'll have to wait for me to come in.

Leslie,

Did you turn blue? :) You had an awesome day at the top of Guardsman. One of these days I'm going to hike up there.

From Jon A on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 12:14:34 from 76.27.81.31

Great job Smooth! I should have gotten out sooner. I had a very lazy morning and didn't hit the trail until almost 9 and then it was WAY hot. I didn't realize how the heat may have effected my run until later in the day. :-) I'll try harder to follow your example. :-)

From Jon A on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 12:16:00 from 76.27.81.31

Oh, and I LOVE pouring the water over my head/hat at the camp grounds. So cool...And my pace came easier after I did that!

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 12:34:07 from 71.36.86.59

Hey Jon,

HOT was understatement. When I pulled out, my car said the temp was in the high 70's. Man alive, I don't know how you and Kelly did it. Yeah, next time I'm carrying frozen water bottles 'cause I usually take my sweet time to get going in the morning and it gets hot fast once the sun is up. Another trick is to put a thin cold wet sponge under your hat. Also wetting your siglets/shirts helps with cooling too.

From marion on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 19:56:26 from 71.213.106.139

What a GREAT and busy day :) I bet the youth loved to hear from you. What did y'all talk to them about?

Oh- and your run was AWESOME!

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 20:23:25 from 71.36.80.47

Our Youth Conference theme was "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12. Larry spoke to them about three things: gain knowledge & understanding, be kind and seek the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Y.C. was two days with service projects on Fri. and E.F.Y. type classes on Sat. It was WONDERFUL!!!

From RAD on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 20:34:22 from 67.166.99.8

The 10K is my 'anniversary' run. It was the first race I ever ran, I'd never run more than 3 miles in my LIFE before that race (2 months after the baby was born) and surprised myself and ran the whole thing except one block on State street. It wasn't fast - 1:10 or something like that, but I did it! So, yes - this will be my 3rd year and I love it!

From Teena on Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 23:04:41 from 67.177.20.13

Hope you are having a FANTASTIC Sunday!!! Can't wait to see you Friday. :)
