Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

I did NOT do any running or exercise today!  My body felt like a freight train had run over it this morning.   I took my blood sugar after Teena called.  I didn't want her to panic.  I was only able to do 3 of the things on my list; none was strenuous, y'all can rest assured.

I'm gonna take my blood sugar first thing in the morning and hopefully it is normal.  I do have a question.  Has anyone lost weight during taper?

I just got a call from my son's friend's mother telling me that her child was diagnosed with Pertussis and Steven was exposed.  Wonderful...I get to call the health department tomorrow to find out what I need to do.

I've heard about Pertussis, and only know that it is very dangerous to babies, right?

I've stayed at about the same weight--though I've eaten quite a big feast on Easter and quite a few jelly beans. I'm surprised I haven't gained.

I'm thinking my blood sugar is a little high lately, too. That and my blood pressure -- I'm starting to wonder if running TOO MUCH is NOT a good thing? Hmmm..maybe I'll take a little breather after Boston. My resting HR was 34 last night when I took my BP (130/75)...and I haven't taken any BetaBlockers in about 2 months. Rest up Susanna. See you, Saturday!

Did he get all his DPT shots when he was younger? Hopefully it has not worn off completely.

Please take care of yourself, Smooth. I hope you can find the time to get plenty of rest. You need and deserve it. I don't know what Pertussis is, but I hope everyone will be ok.

Marc,

Your vital signs are all good especially the B/P sans BetaBlockers. Not gaining weight after a big Easter feast is good.

Maurine,

There have been a rise in Pertussis in the schools these last couple weeks. The epidemiologists are telling people that the DPT immunizations received at age five are no longer effective. They recommend people age 7 and older to get a booster.

Pertussis is dangerous to people in high risk, i.e. infants, elderly, people with immuno-suppressed illness. It is a highly contageous disease so they are trying to stop it from spreading. Those with the diagnosis along with family members are taking antibiotics. They have to report to those whom they've come in close contact with. My son was with this girl all weekend long for the morp dance.

Don't bring Pertussis to Boston with you...please. :)

Smooth,

I hope you are resting right now!!

I am very interested in what the health dept tells you.

I worry about you.

Smooth,

I hope that Steven is ok, that disease sounds really scary. I hope that you are clear from that too, keep that immune system strong. Like Teena, I am too intersted in what the health department has to say.

You have lost weight during the taper? Lucky. The Easter feast from Sunday won't seem to go away. Taper's make me feel kind of gross. They make me feel like my body has forgotten how to run.

From Rhett on Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 13:07:41 from 216.67.216.116

Smooth, I usually lose a couple pounds during taper. I think it may have to do with stopping my core workouts during 3 weeks out. My theory is that I lose some of my upper body muscle. I probably don't eat quite as much either although I feel like I eat the same.

From Kelli on Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 14:51:49 from 71.219.84.191

I WISH I could lose pound ever. Maybe I need to taper to lose weight.

Hope today is better and that all is well with your son. He was immunized, right?

From Smooth on Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 18:07:39 from 70.56.102.54

Bec,

Steven is asymtematic so far. He has a little cough but I think it's from laying around doing nothing. Little stinker is gonna be one out-of-shape slug when football resumes.

I lost 2 lbs over one week. I hope I don't loose any more muscle weight. It happened to me last year too going into Boston. I'm sure I'll gain it back quickly with the post-race party.

Rhett,

That's good to know. I won't worry about it unless it's more than 5% of body weight.

Kelli,

Believe me, you don't want to loose muscle weight. They're the powerhouse for the race. It isn't so much the weight that I worry about; but the low blood sugar, low blood pressure that I also have. I literally would run on fumes if I'm not careful.

Yes, my body felt better today. I ate a lot more protein the last couple days. My fasting blood sugar went up 5 points.

Yes, Steven was immunized; but so were all those kids in the high school. Apparently, the outbreak shows that the shots they got before entering kindergarten no longer provide the protection. They need another booster. So far, Steven is feeling fine. He had a bout of sore throat and mild cough last week. I just don't want him to be sick while we're gone.
