Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

I was determined to run outside this morning.  While listening to the weatherman's report of current temp at 0 (ZERO),  I put on DA GEARS:

1.  For the torzo ~ Under Armour Sub-zero turtleneck and Boston'09 fleece.

2.  For the legs ~ CW-X insulator tights.

3.  For the head ~ Running beanie.

4.  For the fingers ~ Nike running gloves inside Goretex ski mittens.

5.  For the toes ~ Asics socks inside Ultramax ski socks.

6.  I slather my face, especially the nose, with Aquaphor.

What would we ever do without these technical garbs!!!  I tell ya!

The first mile or so my feet, hands and thighs were numb.  By the time I ran past the Credit Union marquee (which said current temp was 1 degree) I was toasty!  The thumbs were cold ('cuz they were by their lonesome selves);  so I tucked them in the mittens where they're happily warmed by their buddies, the fingers.  The only "casualties" were the frozen-shut nostrils (no biggie, just breath thru the mouth which were numb but not frozen shut), red thighs and bums (which quickly returned to normal after a hot shower).

So HAPPY to run outside under sunny sky.  Was a long day going to PCMC.

Good training in the freezing cold! Looks like you were well suited for the run haha! Almost at 2000!

SSF -- I just love reading your posts. I can totally visualize you out there!!! :)

How is Alex?

Love and miss you!!!

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 00:53:20 from 174.23.217.47

Alex is not doing so well! He has lost almost all his hair. Today he vomitted numerous times on the way to the hospital. His counts are WAY low! He has to go back to PCMC tomorrow for 3 units of blood. His hct was 22 and ANC below 0.4 which means he's neutropenic which means he can't be in crowded place or around sick people. He just lays in bed all day, hardly comes upstairs. I feel so bad for him.

That breaks my heart. Sometimes things just stink. I am so sorry. How is Gary and the rest of the family holding up?

What can I do?

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 01:10:02 from 174.23.217.47

Gary and the girls are coming on Wed. to spend the holidays here. They are busy and holding up okay.

Gary ran the Macau Marathon which was supposed to be Alex's first marathon on Dec. 6. They had planned to run it together. I'm glad he still ran it without Alex.

THANK YOU so much for your kind concern! There's not much any of us can do. I think Alex will be a stronger person coming out of this.

From Teena on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 01:17:09 from 174.52.45.85

It is still hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that he is so young and yet has to go through this. Yes, he will definitely be stronger and will certainly have a greater understanding of life than the bulk of us do (including me). I am glad that you are able to spend so much time with him and his family. You are incredible.

Did you hear about the new 4th purpose of the church? About how they are switching the three fold mission to a four purpose? It is cool!

From Teena on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 01:18:08 from 174.52.45.85

Btw, I figure I might as well stay up until Ry comes home because I asked him to bring me back some kettle corn -- and I am hungry!!! :)

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 01:23:30 from 174.23.217.47

Pres. Raines (Larry's 2nd counselor) works for the Presidency of the Seventies said that the Tribune quoted it. I guess the First Presidency will announce it in the new year. I am not surprised. It is SO Pres. Monson to have that 4th purpose. We should already be doing that. Didn't really change the vision or the mission; just put it more in focus! Afterall, that's what true gospel is all about!

Enjoy the kettle corn, might be a bit cold though! :)

You almost said exactly what I said to you and Lowell in an email!!! FUNNY!!! :) Or was it just in response to Lowell in an email. Can't remember ... I'm losing my mind!!!! I left half of it in the Chemistry lab and the other half is trying to escape from studying the Reagan years. :)

I don't care if it is cold ... as long as it has the salty-sweet taste. LOVE IT!!!! :)

From Teena on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 01:27:14 from 174.52.45.85

(And yes, it was the Trib that I saw the announcement in. :))

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 01:32:38 from 174.23.217.47

Sounds like your mind is on the salty-sweet stuff now! Ry has better hurry home! BTW, I have one more Lindl dark chocolate truffle left, the ones you gave me for my b'day. I've been saving it and savoring it. I had to hide them from Steven too. Better go to bed now before I get hungry like you! Nite nite! Sleep well!

From Teena on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 01:35:26 from 174.52.45.85

Sweet Dreams SSF! May the bed bugs kiss you! :)

Please Please Please get some much needed rest!!!

Go ahead and eat the truffle ... I will get you more! (Perhaps I will even get Steven some!) :)

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 01:40:02 from 174.23.217.47

You are SOOO SWEET! Please DON'T get me or Steven any chocolate. We don't need it! :)

I better go to bed now. Have to get up early to take Larry and Jeff to the bus. His car wouldn't start this morning and is in the shop. Busy day tomorrow. But at least I don't have school or paper or project.

I will say a prayer for you to do well! May the bed bugs kiss you too! :) LLL LLL

Reading about somebody else bundling up to run in 1 degree makes it seem crazy. I am always amazed at how much you serve others. It is truly inspiring.

From Kelli on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 09:42:36 from 71.219.71.229

I love all your technical garb!!! Here is what I wear:

running tights---Target

long sleeve "under armor" shirt---Target

fleece jacket---Target

fleece gloves and ear head band thing---Wal Mart

I am a TOTAL cheapskate! I think my socks are the most expensive things on me (aside from shoes, of course).

From Bonnie on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 09:47:27 from 64.119.33.134

Nice post Smooth! I am glad you ran outside and provided us with a play-by-play. I hope the sun comes out and warms you up soon!

From Rhett on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 11:38:27 from 216.67.211.250

They make a Boston fleece! Is it a pull over? I need to get my one of those this year.

Great run in crazy cold weather. Your're tough.

From Smooth on Sat, Dec 12, 2009 at 01:40:00 from 174.23.217.47

Rhett ~ The Boston'09 fleece is a pullover with a 3/4 zip at the neck. It is Adidas formotion line. It's the bright blue with 3 yellow stripes down the arms. It's great for frigid days. I might wear it for skiing.

Kelli ~ You're not cheapskate. As my hubby likes to call me: MONEYWISE!!! Hey, your garbs from Target work just as good w/o the high price.
