Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

My legs felt tired on Sunday.  I spoke with my son who advised me to not run at all this week (may be couple of miles on Thu. or Fri.) and to get 9 hrs sleep daily to let the legs recover.

Well, I did not listen.  The gorgeous weather and the brand new Boston race shirt was calling me to go for a "test run".  From the get go the legs were dead.  2.5 mile into the run my right calf and left quad started to hurt.   I had experienced those pain the last two weeks of running and would seem to get better as the run progress.  Not today... It was a painful death march home.  I should have listened to my son.   I will take the rest of the week off and hope my leg muscles recover in time.

No!!!!! Please be careful. You have worked too hard and too long to let yourself get injured. Please stay off your feet as much as you can this week. (OK - maybe a few 'short' walks).

I think your son was right, you are so ready, just relax and rest and you will do awesome! It is a beautiful day, I see how it was hard to stay indoors.

Take it easy my running friend. Rest up over this week and eat good foods and liquids. Hey, 1 week! 1 week! I can't believe I get to write...1 week! 7 days! Girl, it's going to be a blast!

Thanks everyone! Why am I so hard-headed?

Yes Teena, Market Street sounds wonderful!

I will echo everyone else. Listen to your son. No amount of training right now will improve your Boston fitness, but it may make it worse. If you are hurting, rest. I felt that way last week. I took Fri and Sun off and felt much better today, but still not 100%. With a couple more rest days this week I should be good to go, and Smooth, I know you are ready for an awsome Boston. Just rest!!!!!

YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!!!!! That was a command from me!

Live life this week, enjoy the time off and PLAY!

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 19:27:27 from 207.200.116.6

Rhett, Kelli ~

I was so tired this afternoon that I could not do anything but take a nap. This has been happening to me the last couple of weeks. At first I thought it was from eating a big lunch post run. But it is happening regardless of whether I ate or ran. I am talking about tired to the bone, sleepy, exhausted feeling. I have also noticed a "fruity odor" to my urine. I am just a little concerned. I need to do some research.

From Rhett on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 19:39:02 from 170.215.58.122

Smooth, that was me last week...except the urine thing. I did eat asparagus yesterday though.... Sleep, sleep and more sleep, and no more running until Fri. Then just a little easy run with a few marathon pace strides to wake up those legs.

From Teena on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 19:44:08 from 67.177.20.13

Smoothie,

Have you talked to Lowell about it? If you haven't, you should. I was actually shocked once when he asked me about my urine ... but he can tell you a bunch of stuff when it comes to that.

Talk to him if you haven't already.

From Kelli on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 19:52:59 from 71.219.84.191

Urine talk huh? Asparagus makes for some seriously nasty smelling urine (and so does Honey Nut Cheerios)!! But I do not know about a fruit smell, I have never heard that before!!! Odd.

I think you have been working SO hard it is just catching up to you. Really, take the week off and relax. You are ready for Boston, just enjoy this peaceful week. Take naps, sleep in, go to bed early, REST UP!!!!!

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 19:55:55 from 207.200.116.6

Rhett, Teena,

You're right. I might just need to get more sleep. I will email Lowell. The fruity smell from urine can be a symptom of diabetes or starvation. So, I think perhaps my insulin and blood sugar levels are out of wack.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 19:57:01 from 207.200.116.6

Kelli,

Okee Dokee!

From Teena on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 20:05:54 from 67.177.20.13

Smooth,

Why don't you let me come check your sugar level. I can get my mom's glucometer (or whatever that is called). Now you have me a little bit worried.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 20:13:27 from 207.200.116.132

Teena,

No need. I have a glucscan. We got it when hubby was rehabing from open heart. I will check it before bedtime if I'm still symptomatic. No worries. I will be okay.

From Teena on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 20:17:00 from 67.177.20.13

Okay ... I think you are just burned out from doing so much. You are constantly doing stuff ... you never really get to rest.

You really need to take the rest of this week off. If you want to take a quick spin around the block on Friday just to see how you feel, that'd be good. But DON'T do more than a couple miles at most. REST REST REST and then REST a little bit more!!

I LOVE YOU!!!

From Teena on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 20:19:27 from 67.177.20.13

Oh yeah, just thought of one more thing. Up your Vitamin B, especially B12. Go get some of those Emergen-C packets and take a couple of them a day.

Smooth, take good care of yourself! I would hate to see something nasty happen, especially in Boston!!! Hope it all works out soon.

You are going to be fine! A bunch of rest and a little walking around and you'll be GREAT by next monday. Take up bird watching this week ;D Some gentle stretching and light massage :) Stressing about it is the WORST thing to do. It is going to be A-ok :D Eat good food and get plenty of rest... you are QUEEN for the week :)

Best of luck. Sometimes a little elliptical very easy is a good alternative as well.

Hey Smooth..I hope you're feeling better today and are getting some much-needed rest.

From JulieC on Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 21:01:47 from 67.42.29.141

Did you happen to eat a lot of Easter sweets? Too much sugar always makes me fatigued to the bone, like I can't move. I would try low refined sugar diet, probiotics, rest, hydration (minus high fructose corn syrup), whole grains and vegetables- a rainbow of colors, and as usual good massage after a nice warm bath. Your description of your feelings is what I have been dealing with for years, my diet changes helped immensely. I had blood sugar highs in lows before and the stress of running and then quick fix eating afterwards can cause the same body response sugar wise and then the fatigue. If you can, avoid processed foods. I don't know you very well so sorry if this I sound like a broken record. I figure we are about the same age and our bodies are at the point of crying out for careful nutrition. Okay I am done. Good luck in Boston!!

From Smooth on Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 21:22:18 from 70.56.102.54

Thanks for all your kind concern. I did not run today so that's rest, right?

Julie,

I appreciate so much your advise and input on nutrition. I tried to eat whole food. The only processed food I eat are cereal, yogurt, milk. The only Easter treats I had was some Boston baked beans (candy-coated peanuts) I got from Kelli on Sat. I'm gonna take my blood sugar first thing tomorrow morning and see what it is. I took it this morning about 2 hours after breakfast and it was 74. That might be a bit low for not having done any exercise. I have lost about 2% body weight. It happens to me every time when I taper. I don't know why. I eat 3 squares with good portion of protein and carb. For snacks, I eat whole almonds, blue berries, tomatoes, whole wheat bread w/ peanut butter and banana. Thanks again for your help.

From Kelli on Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 23:25:23 from 71.219.84.191

Oh no, the Boston Baked beans have done you in!!!

All will be well, you are good at listening to your body. Just take care!!!

From JulieC on Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 09:34:38 from 67.42.16.179

I am up early and thinking I guess I am to run in rain AGAIN, and thinking wish it was my taper week. At least today mother nature is not tempting you. I figured you were a nutritious person so congrats there, I unfortunately have to try harder when chocolate is around, and ice cream. Did you try the warm bath and massage? I was thinking of Deena Kastor in the video Spirit of the Marathon, her husband does all her stretching for her, cause she says she is too lazy/tired to do it herself, but obviously she is not, it is just more mentally/physically relaxing to have someone work on you. Enjoy the day off!! PS Boston baked beans? Wow I haven't seen those since growing up in New England. I am sure they are just a good omen though.
