Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Schedule calls for 5 recovery miles.  Pfitzinger says to optimize training, one needs to find the correct balance between training and recovery.  The most common mistake marathoners make is training too hard on recovery days.  For optimal recovery run, I need to keep heart rate below 70-75% or run approximately 2 minutes per mile slower than half marathon pace.

Temp. was in the low 20's.  The road has a layer of sparkly snow crust.  Perfect condition to do a recovery run.  I love this kinda winter morning when the mountains are completely covered with snow.  Its peaceful calm was only interrupted by the soft crunches of my slow smooth rythmic strides.

About 2.5 miles into the run I saw a gal turning from a corner and running the same direction ahead.  By her running form I recognized who she was.  I slowly caught up to her.  It was fun to talk about our SGM experiences.  I ended up running her home, for a total of 6.25 miles.  Average pace:  10:27, HR: 148, Arth: 5

Sounds like a beautiful winter run! Do you live in the foothills? Thanks for the helpful tips on recovery runs, I have run for years, but without any real direction, so I am enjoying all the info you strong runners share on the blog!!

Thanks!

Love, the fanny sitting granny! ( I love it! What we do with out our crazy fun Marion??)

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 14:48:28

Yes, I live on the foothills, what we call "the Lehi bench". The terraine here is perfect for running. The only draw back is the wind. It converges from the Point of the Mountain (Traverse Ridge) and the American Fork Canyon making it wild. Thus we get bad snow drifts sometimes.

Hey, how many grandkids do you have? Actually you're an ultra runnin' fanny kickin' granny. YAY for CRAZY FUN!!!

From leslie on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 15:06:17

Unfortunately, my four children have not given me any grandkids, but my husband has 9!!! Holy Cow! I am too young for that, our oldest is 15! Step grandkids are great, but I really want my very own!!!!! How many do you have? I know you have one in Texas.

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 15:16:36

I have 3 grandkids from my oldest daughter. They live in Houston area. My second child and his wife are expecting their first baby in May. They live in DesMoines. I LOVE being a granny. Yes, we are TOO YOUNG!!! But I love being a "nana" and so blessed to be healthy. Oh, when your four children have their own kids, that's when they really appreciate you. How's Paul doing? I assume he's your son-in-law?

Nice recovery run Smooth. And great workout afterwards.

From leslie on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 15:45:03

Lucky duck to be a real granny! Julie and Paul are my only married kids, yes, Paul is my son-in-law. He is really struggling, he won't leave the house, he is very anxious after all the seizures, my daughter thinks he is over medicated, so they are looking into that now, that would help explain the nervousness and depression. Thanks for asking. Who would have ever thought a healthy young athletic man would have a stroke? It is tough to watch my kids go thru this. But, I can see how it humbles you and strengthens families.

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 16:07:42

It IS tough to watch. You feel so helpless. I am sure Paul and Julie feel the great love and support you have for them during this trying time.

Modern medicines is wonderful despite the "2-sided-sword" of medications. They have to find the right kind of drugs, the proper dosage and then there are the side-effects. The good thing going for Paul is, like you say, he's young athletic, he will overcome this. Best wishes to y'all.

GREAT JOB on the workout and sticking with your plan!! I think a lot of people run too fast a lot of the time (INJURY---hmmmm, maybe me????)

And awesome job on the rest of the workout.

From Kathie on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 19:08:09

Way to go smooth I should have read your blog before I went out then maybe I would have just done a nice easy recovery run... it is nice to have my fast days over with and it is only Tuesday!

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 12:50:42

Kelli -- I learn by trial and error. At my age, there's little room for error. So I've got to stick with something.

Kathie -- I am with ya. I like to have the fast days over with early in the week.
