Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Went to the HS track to do the "Break the Taper" interval workout.  It's been a long time since I ran on the track.  It was winter of 2007 when there was snow on the track.  The HS has installed artificial turf and new track surface last year.

Warm up with couple minutes of Dynamic Flexibility Exercises and 1 mile around the track.  Wow, the track is so springy that my warm up mile came in at 8:52.  That's too fast.  The plan was to run 10 x 400 at 5K pace with 1 min. rest.   By the 6th interval I was getting very tired, hot and thirsty.  The Dance Company and Football Team came out to the field and was warming up on the track.  I didn't want to embarrass myself or my son; so I cut it short with only 8 sets and jog for 5 laps to cool down.

Time (pace) for the 0.25 mi intervals:  1:51 (7:28),  1:43 (6:54), 1:45 (7:01), 1:49 (7:19), 1:48 (7:13), 1:49 (7:19), 1:52 (7:30), 2:00 (8:10)

I'm guessing you need to know the 'new math' to understand everything you did. As usual Smooth, I will just sit back and be in awe of you. Nice workout today.

Good workout Smooth! I'm gonna have to try that kinda thing someday. Wow your awesome.

Holy speedy feet!! Look at those laps...I'm impressed! Great job on the workout, and way to 'break the taper'!!

From Bec on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 17:19:28 from 205.123.38.151

Good for you to get down to that track. How is the new track/field anyway? I have never seen it. Great laps, I'm sure the track team now wants you on their team.

Kathie,

You know how teenagers are. They only think you're cool if their friends think you're cool.

jun,

I'm terrible at math. I can't count to save my life. I just set my Garmin to 0.25 mile intervals with 1 min. rest and check the box that says "to include warm up and cool down." I hit the start button, after one mile warm up I hit the lap button and let it beeps while I did the thing. After I got home, the Training Center reads out what my interval time and pace were. What would I do w/o the toy, eh?

Jon,

It looks cool on paper especially with "Break the Taper" title. It's a workout from R.W. that Teena's friend, Lowell sent me. It sure gets rid of sluggish legs fast during tapering.

Rachel,

That's the workout 12 days out for tapering. I thought I'd give it a try. It's hard mainly b/c I've done very little interval workout. But I think I may like it.

Bec,

The field is artificial so it relfects a lot of heat making it hot. Natural grass has more of a cooling effect. The track however is awesome. Very springy. The old one had cracks. The new one has nice markings. I'm gonna run on it this summer when school's out. I probably have to do it early before the football guys or Xcountry team get there.

Gotta love the spongy, springy track. Awesome workout, Speedy!

Awesome workout, Smooth!!! I wish they'd open up the track to the public around here. I would rather do speed work on a track than a treadmill.

Anyone running a long run this Saturday on JRP? Or is everyone in your group tapering for Ogden. I need to get in 19 and am dreading it.

From Smooth on Tue, May 05, 2009 at 21:23:35 from 71.36.82.104

Marc, Dale,

It's nice to have a HS track close by. Dale, how come you can't run on your HS track? I figure as long as there's not a track meet and you don't get it the students' PE class or sport then it's game. Do they lock the gate?

Luzy,

I'm doing 10-12 at the most this Sat. tapering for Ogden. I'm eyeing Sasha's 5 miler race in Provo. If I run that I'll add a mile warm up and 4-5 mile cool down. I like running my long with some body too.

GREAT WORKOUT!

From DonGardinero on Wed, May 06, 2009 at 03:32:45 from 75.162.96.231

Smooth...They do indeed lock the gate at the track. I thought about climbing the fence, but it's about 10 feet tall.

From Teena on Wed, May 06, 2009 at 09:48:23 from 67.177.20.13

Embarrass nothing!!!! They would all have stood there with their jaws on the ground. You are AWESOME!!!

I love the Break the Taper workouts. Did you get it from Lowell? He gave it to me before SGM and it was FABULOUS!!!!

Love you Love You Love You!! Hope you are having a fun Wednesday. :)

From marion on Wed, May 06, 2009 at 11:05:58 from 71.213.116.211

Wouldn't it be GREAt if our kids could know how cool we are RIGHT now? :) Have you kicked your son yet about the whole push up nose to the ground thing?

Great run, Smooth :)

From Smooth on Wed, May 06, 2009 at 12:45:58 from 71.36.82.104

Dale,

You should talk to the school about unlocking the gate.

Teena,

Yep, that's the one. Lowell thinks I run too much. He says I should do weekly intervals. I could tell I wasn't used to doing it. I'm stiff this morning.

Love you too!

Marion,

Funny you should mention the push up nose thing. Yesterday afternoon, the girl whom he took to Prom came over to the house. The three of us were talking about sports. Steven was saying how he needs to "bulk" up more before football season. I mentioned the push up challenge. The girl defended me on the proper form. He still thinks I was doing it the wrong way. I let him win on the pull up thing though. Guys just don't want to be "chicked" in more ways than one.
