Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Had to run fast so I could catch my flight.  I'm pleased with the time, not bad for a 49 year old man.  Just one more left of the 5 Major Marathons, the London Marathon in April, then I will achieve my goal of running all five under 3 hrs.

I will post details later since I barely made it to the airport and am on the plane home to Hong Kong.

Btw, I'm the brother-in-law to the mast amazing, beautiful and funny Smooth!

Gary, Smooth, Lloyd at the Boston Expo in April this year.

I have Gary's race report; but can't copy and paste here.  Does anyone know how to do that?

OK, the report is at the comment below!

Nicely done, Smooth-Bro-In-Law. When I grow old I want to be as fast as you. ;) Heck, I'd like to be as fast as you while I'm still young!

Jeez, this was too confusing to read on a Monday morning... I thought Smooth was a girl... and sub-3, wow... Ok, I finally got it, 3 hours later...

Congrats, Smoot's BIL! That must've been an amazing race!

Berlin Marathon.

Finished in 2:54:07. Berlin is a beautiful city with a lot of history. It was a 22 hour trip from Hong Kong arriving 36 hours before the race. I’m glad I took a bus tour of the city on Saturday to see the sights. Even though the marathon course wound its way throughout the city I only saw the 10 meters of road in front of me and missed all of the scenery.

Saturday carbo load: power bar, sausage/egg mcmuffin, pancakes, orange juice, big german pastry, scampi pasta with bread, bratwurst sandwich, fried rice, chinese noodles, banana, 2 litres of powerade and lots of water. Sunday morning: 2 litres of powerade, 2 bananas, power bar, bagel chicken sandwich, apple muffin.

Race started at 9am; I think there were 40,000+ runners or so; very well organized; weather was beautiful, 60 degrees with slight breeze. I was lined up about 20-30 yards from the start line; took me 18 seconds to cross the start line. Was on pace of 4 minute kilometer from the first k and stayed right on that pace for the first half…5k = 19:47; 10k = 39:55; 15k = 1:00; 20k = 1.20:38; half = 1:25:07. Felt good, everything was working, breathing was comfortable. Given that I’ve never ever ran an even split or a negative split, I didn’t have much confidence of running a 2:50 or 2:51 but did think I could do maybe do 2:53 or 2:54 and definitely wanted under 2:55 which I then set as my new goal. The last half varied from 4 minute ks to 4:15s. As much as I tried I just couldn’t keep the steady pace as the first half. I still felt pretty good. Course was very very flat; crowds were large and friendly; lots of kids giving high fives. Water stops were every 2 to 3 kilometers; there wasn’t any sports drinks, but there was tea. Gu at 18k, 23k, 28k, 33k, and 38k. In other sub 3 marathons there was always a point of ‘why am I doing this’ and hating life for a while. I never got to that point in this race and actually enjoyed most of it. Definitely challenging at times, counted down the kilometers at times, but never really felt horrible…..which does beg the question of whether I could have dug a little deeper. As usual with these races one goes through many thoughts during the race; for me part of the thinking is usually about people for various reasons….today it was my family, in particular my son, Chris, my sister-in-law Susanna and all her many running friends, my good buddy Kevin and my dear friend Carrie.

The finish was at the Brandenburg gate which was really cool. Tons of people at the finish. I was able to get back to a 4 minute k somewhere around 40 or 41k and had a strong finish. Finished with everything working well, nothing hurt outside of the normal soreness of running 42.2k; no chaffing; no blisters. Average heart rate for the race was 88-89% of max heart rate. Average speed was 14:54 km/h or 4:07 per km. Temperature was around low 70s at the finish. I’m sure training in HK in 33 degrees Celsius (90+ degrees F) and 95% humidity helped for this race. Felt great about the race and my time. Medals were cool.

After the race I went back to the hotel and sat in the ice plunge for 12 mins, Jacuzzi for 15 mins, ice plunge for another 6 mins, and sauna for 10 mins with lots and lots of stretching. Three hours after the race I felt almost normal; legs were fine, only some very slight soreness. Then headed for the airport for the 22 hour journey home.

Four down and one to go….only London left to conquer of the five world major marathons. Chicago 2:47; New York 2:59; Boston 2:58; Berlin 2:54; London ??

This was my fifth marathon this year. Hong Kong, Boston, Singapore, Deseret News and Berlin. May do one more.

THANKS everyone!

Hey Mom, I'm staying up late waiting for David to arrive at the airport. I haven't visited your blog in months. I forgot that Uncle Gary was running Berlin. It's pretty incredible what he's done. Here's his finish, in case you haven't seen it yet.

That was pretty awesome. I saw him. Man, that's amazing the amount of finishers coming in at the same time, but I guess that's how it is when there's 40,000+ runners. Poor announcer.
