Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

KT tape the knee.  Karen picked me up and off we went to the JRP.  Temp 31, cloudy, 10mph SE wind.  Got a nice tailwind running north.  We *trespassed* the construction site since there were no workers and the torn-up trail (aka mud) was frozen; also avoided the school traffic at the elementary had we gone on the *detour*.

The knee started to complain almost immediately, but survived the uphill.  Running downhill was a different story.  Going south was no fun w/ the headwind.  Took the detour on the return since we didn't want to trudge thru mud.

Reload the fuel belt at the car (mile 10.8) and stretched a bit; then continued onto the south portion.  Encountered a few dog-walkers which always make Sky a bit skittish.  She seemed to enjoy watching the hawks, Canadian geese and other fowls.  Stopped at Willow Park's pop (mile 12.80) and stretched a bit.  The last 3 miles were nice as we got a bit of tailwind.

This was one of the slowest 18 miler I have ever run.  The knee held out ok but the pelvic symphysis is not happy.  Poor leg turnovers, no energy, forgot to eat breakfast, drank gatorade before start and every 2-3 miles, took 5 Powerbar chews at mile 6-7, hammer gel at mile 13.

Busy day today as we have out of town friends coming to stay overnight and ski tomorrow.   Fun weekend! :)

I'm sorry the run was so difficult. I am amazed at your persistence and tenacity, but please don't end up with an injury like I have by not allowing the body to recover.

You really are amazing -- sometimes too amazing!

I get tired just reading about your adventures.

From Rhett on Sat, Feb 19, 2011 at 11:51:14 from 74.32.208.190

Smooth, you are way tougher than I am. Lately I quit when the pain level hits about 4 out of 10. I guess I'm just gun shy after my stress fracture incident

Amazing miles on a bum knee!

I got me a foam roller and I cried like a baby as I used it. Now that is some serious pain!

From flatlander on Sat, Feb 19, 2011 at 13:21:38 from 76.31.26.153

Good run, you got it in before the big weekend and that's the important thing.

From Tom Slick on Sat, Feb 19, 2011 at 13:44:37 from 69.171.160.127

Better give that knee some TLC. 57 days till Boston!!!

From Teena Marie on Sat, Feb 19, 2011 at 14:51:15 from 67.2.102.27

Hope you are babying that leg and enjoying your day.

I'm with Paul, you are often FAR TOO TOUGH!!!!!

I love you! :)

From Nancy on Sat, Feb 19, 2011 at 19:40:55 from 76.27.19.206

I'm sorry the knee is giving you trouble. That was a pretty long run with a sore knee. Great job!!!

From Kathie on Sat, Feb 19, 2011 at 19:53:24 from 63.248.105.188

I hope you are having fun skiing, nice miles yesterday!

From Smooth on Sat, Feb 19, 2011 at 23:28:49 from 67.2.69.27

Paul ~ You are so right...speaking with wisdom and experience! I am such a stubborn fool. I just want to build my long run up to 20. I know if I can finish a 20 miler, I can finish 26.2 even if I had to walk it.

Dale ~ I was exhausted and femished after the run. All is after a hearty lunch and icing the knee! :)

Rhett ~ If it weren't for Karen running with me, I would have quit. She is training for her first marathon at SLC and I promised her that I would train with her! She is an amazing athlete and a wonderful running partner!

The first time I used that torture device, I cried like a baby. Seriously, I had to breath thru it. But it does get easier with each successive use. My grand-daughter thinks I'm exercising and she rolls her tummy on it with delight!

Flat ~ Yes, so glad I got it done before the skiing weekend! We have great snow!

Slick ~ Thanks for the reminder!

SSF ~ Busy day today! Didn't ice or roll. So glad tomorrow is Sunday...REST day...AHHHH!

Nancy ~ I guess that's part of the game! Wish I knew how to swim or bike like you; then I'd xtrain to give that knee a rest!

Kathie ~ You know it! Your mileage has been awesome, so are your speed! You're gonna peak just right for Boston!

From Kelli on Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 00:04:38 from 71.219.69.52

CrAzY busy week! How do you manage to do it all???

Hope your family is feeling better, your body starts healing up instead of complaining, and I REALLY hope you had fun skiing!

From Smooth on Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 00:10:37 from 67.2.69.27

Kelli ~ I miss you so much! Your life is so much more crazy busy than mine! I don't know how YOU manage to do it all and do it so WONDERFULLY WELL! :)

It's good that I am having family and friends visiting and lots of happy things coming up in April...or I'd run my legs to the ground and myself to the grave! :)

From Kelli on Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 00:19:01 from 71.219.69.52

It is time to get together again! We should go to lunch on a Friday (I no longer have to work Fridays as long as I can get everything done on the other days of the week!!!)

From Smooth on Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 00:33:50 from 67.2.69.27

I am IN! Are you leaving for Del Sol next Friday though? We need to celebrate your birthday too! :)

From RAD on Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 00:39:07 from 67.172.229.125

Nice work Smooth, but I worry about that knee of yours. Be good to it! You still have 57 days till Boston, keep yourself healthy please!

From glidergirl on Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 01:29:07 from 155.100.9.11

"I forgot to eat breakfast" that made me laugh! Who does that? I NEVER forget to eat. =0) Nice run, but I'm with Rachel, I worry about it, too. Hopefully it heals up. It's OK if you take some extra rest days. :)

From Kelli on Sun, Feb 20, 2011 at 16:34:59 from 71.219.69.52

Yep, we will be gone this week for the race. I love getting to spend my birthday somewhere a little warmer.

From Andy on Tue, Feb 22, 2011 at 09:29:17 from 174.52.172.236

Seems like this is the time of the year for painfully slow runs. It will all pay off. Keep up the great work.

From Smooth on Tue, Feb 22, 2011 at 18:20:37 from 67.2.117.33

Kelli ~ We'll just have to plan lunch when you get back from Del Sol! So happy your bruised hiney is getting better and you're back at running and working hard like a mad woman! :)

Rachel ~ I'm trying! It's a fine line between keeping myself in running shape to finish Boston without crippling the dang knee! :) It's all part of the game.

Brooke ~ Some days I'm in such a hurry that I do forget to eat breakfast! But I made up for it with a gynormous lunch. Speaking of lunch, when are we getting together for a celebration lunch?

And yes, I am taking extra rest days. I'm only running 3-4 days a week whereas I used to run 6 days! :) I admire you for your patience and awesome xtraining. You will be so fast when you hit the road running!

Andy ~ I hope it pays off in 7+ weeks especially when I hit Heartbreak at mile 21. I am getting very nervous about it. It will be a miracle if I finish and without a trip to the med tent! :) Thanks for checking up on me!
