Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Ok, I tried to listen to everyone's advice:  "listen to my body".  Well, it's telling me that I'm old, tired and worn-out.  The stubborness within tells me to just do it.  :-o

I was actually relieved to see the blowing snow.  It gave me an excuse to avoid the track which would just do more harm to my ITB.  To the TM I went for the VO2 max workout.

Andy said not to be afraid to cut short the warm up and cool down miles.  I sorta listened.  Seriously, it takes at least 3 miles to warm up this old body.  But I did cut one mile off the cool down.

Warm up miles:  10:46 (everything hurts), 9:30, 9:02

8 dynamic flexibility exercises

5 x 1200m @ 5K race pace, jog 50-90% RI time b/w:

5:27 (2:30),  5:25 (2:28),  5:25 (2:31),  5:21 (2:31),  5:18 (2:25)

Cool down miles: 8:22,  8:47  (oops, should have slowed down a bit; but the ITB hurts worse to slow down)

TT: 1:25:47.  AP: 8:43

Will ice, roll and stretch lots today!  Just need to survive this week!

nice workout smooth. you have been putting in some crazy-excellent mileage for weeks and weeks---unwavering and uninterrupted. no worries about feeling tired and worn-out. the fitness is still there and after a good taper everything will come together. take care of the ITB. ice! roll! stretch!

From Andy on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:05:30 from 199.190.170.24

I think we all knew that the stubbornness would win. What a great workout on severely fatigued legs.

From RAD on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:13:04 from 67.172.229.125

wow...you must be a machine!

Be careful with that ITB! Roll, stretch, roll and stretch some more! NO injuries, especially ITBS this close to Boston!!

From Rhett on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:17:46 from 74.32.222.202

Smooth, if it was anyone else I'd be really worried, but you have worked through these ITB issues in the past and always seem to come through with a great race. Please stay smart.

From Kathie on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:35:18 from 63.248.105.188

Nice run...super fast! You are so going to rock Boston just play it smart until then.

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 17:47:52 from 71.219.89.155

Do some YOGA, little "old" lady!!! I KNOW you are a smart runner, one of the smartest, so i am not in the least bit worried!

How many miles this week??

From RivertonPaul on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 18:17:31 from 67.42.27.114

Let's get super Smootie healthy.

From Teena Marie on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 18:34:15 from 174.52.45.85

SSF -- I REALLY wish you weren't so hard on yourself. If you only could see what we all see. YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exceptional run today!!!! Do you want to come over before Thursday and let me work on your legs?

From LuzyLew on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 19:48:49 from 208.187.197.42

You can not overtrain! Stop it! If you do feel that you may be overtraining (legs like lead, coming down with a cold, not sleeping well, and overly tired every day), your body may need a break. Ask someone who knows, but I think you only start to 'lose your fitness level' after 3-5 days. We only have two more weeks of heavy training before the 'taper.' But please MamaSmooth--don't break your body apart before Boston!!

From JulieC on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 20:15:56 from 207.224.202.129

Cool... look at those splits...this plan is really working well for you. You are improving with each waking running moment. I know what you mean about a long warm up. I take three miles too. And still I am needing more.... YOU ROCK!! You are sooo close to the finish line : DDDDDD

From JulieC on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 20:21:42 from 207.224.202.129

BTW that was 3.75 miles of SW....So you actually ran farther faster, YAHOOO!! And based on your time you can bump your AP down, ( I just happen to have an 8:30 avg for 10 memorized = 1:25 minutes). Just giving you credit where credit is due and I am a big numbers girl, ICU nurses are always calculating to the point : D I also can remember my times at almost every race I've run in my life...so maybe I am OCD or an IS.

From MarcE on Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 21:57:01 from 204.16.82.112

Smooth--you're AMAZING! What program are you following that is getting your miles up so high?

From Smooth on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 00:42:46 from 174.23.198.220

allie ~ THANKS for your encouraging words. So busy today, didn't roll; but did some icing and stretching.

Andy ~ Thanks for the reminder today that heavy and dead legs mean training is going good.

Rachel ~ You're an expert on keeping the ITB healthy! I need to do some of that adductor and abductor exercises. So much to do and so little time.

Rhett ~ Yes, I know...nothing stupid...thanks for the reminder!

Kathie ~ How's your calf?

Kellie ~ The schedule says 68. I will probably run less than that.

Paul ~ You're being so patient in getting healthy and not run when injured. I admire your dedication.

SSF ~ You are too busy to fit me in. Can't wait to see you on Thu. Hope you were able to get caught up today. LOVE YOU!

Luz ~ It's such a fine line between overtraining and optimal training. This high mileage thing is wearing me out. Can't wait to hang with you at Boston.

Julie ~ I'm so impressed with your math skill...on so little sleep too. I can't do math to save my life. You're a genius! Of course most runners are OCD, yours truly included.

Marc ~ I am following Pete Pfitzinger's 70/18 program. I used his 55/18 for the last two Bostons and worked well. This time I thought I'd experiment with the max mpw of 70. After Boston I'll scale back the mileage and play it by ear. I am not smart enough to make up my own training program though.

From DonGardinero on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 01:24:22 from 75.162.167.197

Wow Smoothie...I don't know how you do it. I know I say that all the time, but that's how I feel.

From MrsFIT on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 13:04:44 from 205.127.241.18

You know the old saying...better to go into a race a bit undertrained than overtrained!! Be smart Smoothie :)

From Toby on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 22:12:22 from 216.194.124.36

Hope you are doing better today and resting! I agree to MRS FIT - take it easy!

From Smooth on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 23:14:27 from 174.23.198.220

Dale ~ You say the nicest things to me! THANK YOU!

Kristi ~ I'm too stubborn for my own good!

Toby ~ I'm addicted to running. I kept telling myself I will rest tomorrow! :)
