Run happy and healthy all the days of my life. Be an example and inspiration to my family.

Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

SUCCESSFUL training run at Park City!

Went to bed at 11pm.   Fever broke at midnight.   Skipped to the loo every 90 min. (tummy was a rumble jumble!)  Up & dressed by 4.  Hubby gave me a blessing before leaving for Park City.  Managed to down a yogurt, an overripe banana and Amino Vital (free sample).  I had lost 2 lbs overnight.

Got to the Field House at 5:30 to pick up my bib (#494 in Chinese phonics = die a long death), GREAT!  Met up with LuzyLewis, Catherine, Maurine, Teena, RivertonPaul, Huans32 and MrsFit.  Saw cute AmberG and her beautiful mom.  Wished Amber luck in defending her title!

Smooth, Teena, Amber & Toni inside the Field house.

A quick Kodak moment w/ RivertonPaul!  THANKS for hanging w/ me pre/post race! :)

Started with Cath & Luz who have had a busy week of moving.  We wanted to take it nice and easy.  Loved every second of running and chatting with them.  They stopped at the p-o-p around mile 4 and I never saw them again.

The good lookin' Catherine & Luz.

Around mile 5 a gal (wearing lime green) from my AG passed me.  I let her go.  The Rail Trail miles could be boring thus beneficial to run with someone.  There was also a pretty strong headwind.  I started chatting with two girls. Kelly & Ann, wearing pink (one in a tutu).  They're trail runners doing the Triple Challenge.  The chatting made these trail miles pass by fast.

The aid station around mile 9 was set up in a parking area 50 yards away from the trail, what's up with that?  We skipped it.  Anyhow, it was good to see my hubby cheering.  At the mile 12 aid station, the pink duo stopped to use the p-o-p.  I needed to go too but there was only ONE p-o-p; so I wished them luck and ran on towards Poison Creek trail.  Hubby was there to cheer.  I asked if he bought pickles.  He said no.  O well, I didn't need it then; but hoping he would, just in case.

From there on out, I ran by my lonesome self.  The happy memory of my run with Teena on this portion of the course kept me going.  Had to dash off course to use the bathroom at the City Park.  That stop took 5 min.!!!!  DANG the rumble tumble tummy!!!  There was a guy flying an awesome kite at the park.  NICE entertainment!

At the round-about I saw MrsFit.  Imagine my joy as she held out her hand to give me a lift.  I sure miss that girl!  Standing behind her was TomSlick.  We exchanged greetings and hugs.  They inquired if I had seen DonGardinero to which I replied negative!  We were concerned that perhaps he was lost along the trail in the dark!  Hope he found his way there soon b/c it was getting pretty darn hot!!!!

I kept my eyes on the lookout for Teena and any FRBs running down towards us.  As if on cue, there she was, my SSF flying down looking fresh and happy.   We side-fived which gave me the boost to march up the highest point of the course.

I spotted my car in the middle of Deer Valley parking lot but no sign of hubby.  I later found out he fell asleep in the car.  Silly boy!  Can't blame him though, it's tiring to be paparazzi, cheer leader and athlete-manager! :) On the downhill stretch, a girl who's been leap-frogging with me asked if I had any iburophen.  I just so happened to carry a couple (b/c of the fever & headache).  I gave her the ibuprophen and took out an S-cap which I took at the 17.5 mile aid station.  I grabbed a wash cloth to put on my head/neck the rest of the run.  Did I mention it was getting warm?

The course was detoured this year, no running thru open mall or across skier bridge.  Instead we ran further on Poison Creek Trail then turned up towards the killer 8th St. hill.  EVERYONE walked here while the cute Flyers children handed out candies.

Kept a controlled pace running down Empire St. and tried to psyche myself out on the undulating rolling neighborhood along the golf course.  Passed a lot of runners and gave them encouragement.  Picturing in my mind AndyB and Teena running the rest of these miles together made me happy.

Back on the bike path I was so looking forward to seeing my hubby.  There he was with a jar of pickles in hand.  He said he had to choose between some "sour dill" or "sweet midgets" at the store.  It was a no brainer which one *matches* me! :)   I chomped down 2 and took a swig of the pickle juice! :-}   The McPollin Barn was not the oasis like they had described.  By now I had already taken 4 gels and the only thing I could stomach was the juice from oranges.  They had none!  O well, I took a banana and another S-cap.  Had been diligent with my hydration at every station.

I picked up the pace on the dirt trail and passed many runners.  At mile 23 the lime-green gal in my AG appeared.  I passed her and she never caught back up.  The legs felt great until the last mile when I started to feel twinges of cramps.  I kept repeating the motto: "smooth, fast, strong" over and over and stomped hard at any sign of cramps.  Took courage from my husband's blessing and the extra magic from the pickles.  With the roaring cheer of my friends, I safely crossed the finish arch upright, happy and satisfied.

Congratulating my SSF while she called her dad to tell him of her AG win! :)

SO HAPPY AmberG gracefully defended her title, my SSF won her AG and RivetonPaul also placed in his AG.  I am happy with this run.  With this year's warmer and windier conditions and not feeling well my time is only 4 min slower than last year.  Today, more than 36 hrs later I have no soreness, just some tightness after driving to Logan to take my baby to USU.  Now onto Pocatello in two weeks then SGM!!!!

SSF, aka WONDERWOMAN!!! :)

First, I just absolutely love everything about you!!! I was so worried about you before the race, you just weren't your natural bubbly "let's get this party started" self. I knew you were so sick. :( Seeing you just in Deer Valley looking so strong was an amazing high!!! I am so in awe of your strength!

Seriously, you ran that race so well. No one would have ever known just how sick you were. You are AMAZING!!!

I love you so much.

You finished looking pretty!!! :) :) :)

Thanks for being my SSF. And placing third when you are so sick ... DANG, you rock!!! :)

Congratulations on a great race and AG placement, and thanks for the pics. Please don't take it wrong, but you look more refreshed at the end than the beginning, like you ran it backwards or something. Great report, thanks again, glad you are feeling better.

From Maynard on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 00:29:01 from 71.213.44.67

Overall, it sounds like you had a pretty good race--and 3rd in your AG ain't too shabby either!

Incredible accomplishment considering your illness! You are really tough. Thanks for posting the pix -- I don't get to see these folks and I really enjoyed the photos.

Smooth, what a fantastic time on a brutal course. What This has been an amazing year for you! No way I could race as much as you do. Where do you have the fountain of youth hid?

From LuzyLew on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 14:14:33 from 208.187.197.42

Hey Lady! We were about 7 minutes behind you, but lost you at the POP's. It was fun to hang for the first 5 miles. Thanks for the warning about the 17 miles up-hill! I was not ready for all a marathon at all, much less that killer course! PC is a tough!! But we had a really wonderful time enjoying the scenery and running together w/ Cath. I will try and go back next year to 'conquer' the course afresh (and also legitimately registered). But this year I was just glad to be there (without getting arrested by the race director for pilfering the Gatorade). You are such an inspiration. I'm glad you weren't too sick during the race. I was so glad to see you and get to run together, even for a bit. I don't know what I'll be doing the rest of this year--so it was wonderful to see you. Moving really knocked the wind out of me and set my whole world upsidown. Congrats on a solid effort on that amazingly challenging course!!

From Doone on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 14:53:23 from 74.36.34.151

Official announcement**** You and Pres. Smooth are rockstars!! You two are such an amazing team. Way to go pushing through the illness, aches, pains, dehydration and cramping. SO PROUD OF YOU!! You look so good in your after pictures. Congrats to Larry for taking a much needed and deserved nap in the car and still making it to the right aide station with pickles. You need to train Rhett on how to watch a spouse in a marathon!

So excited it went well. Can't wait to see you in 1.5 weeks in Pocatello.

From Smooth on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 15:44:52 from 174.23.203.161

SSF ~ The best part of my PCM'10 is being there for your first AG win! I am certain that you will have many more AG wins! Thanks for making memories with me! GOOD LUCK with school! You are an amazingly driven and CRAZY SSF!!! Love you!

Flatlander ~ I was surprised at how much better I felt as the race progress. Seriously, I think the fresh mountain air and the easy pace did me good. Or may be the pickles!? But the thoughts of friends at the finish definitely helped pull me through!

Maynard ~ I actually took 4th in my AG. But the first gal's time was 3:18!!! She must have won the master thus pumping us up! Last year I ran a faster time and came in 6th or 7th! Funny how I had no intention to race this thing and ended up placing. I was just glad all the fast o'ladies stayed home!

Julie ~ SO TRUE!!! I love the scenery at PC. That race always holds fond memories of friends for me even though it's a tough course and my nemesis for leg cramps!

You RAN an AMAZING Hobble Creek and CONGRATS on the MASTER WIN albeit unofficial!!!

Andy ~ YOU ran an outstanding Half! CONGRATS!!! My only regret was not seeing you at PC! Thanks for running Teena in! We knew you'd come thru for the favorite harem! :)

Nancy ~ I ran SGM'08 with a fever and tendonitis but that year was the Monsoon SGM so the rain helped tremendously. I was concerned with the heat at PCM this time but luckily the fever broke, though a little dehydrated; not too bad. The only issue was the GI and pop stop before the big hills. I am indeed lucky or blessed!

Tim ~ THANKS!

Paul ~ I wasn't much of a joy that morning. Hope I didn't ruin your pre-race vibes! THANKS for waiting at the finish. You're a GREAT friend and TERRIFIC runner. CONGRATS on your AG placement!

Sno ~ HI there! THANKS! You should come run some of these Utah races; we'd love to meet you in person!

Jason ~ THANKS! It was a good day and a lucky one too!

Johnny ~ THANK YOU! Can't wait to run with you again sometime!

Rhett ~ Just added another pic of me and RivertonPaul! THANKS!

I admit I'm a marathon-addict! Seriously, I believe if I had stayed home, the flu would still be lingering and I'd be miserable. Running has a way to cure all!

Kelli ~ THANKS for thinking of me. That's the next best thing to having you there to run the last couple of miles in with me! I so needed that!

Rachel ~ I kept reminescing our PCM run last year. Wish you could have been there to run with me, Cath and Luz! That would have been sooooo FUN! Thanks for the kudos!

Scott ~ Look who's talking?!!! You camped out at the Uinta and got up before anyone else to conquer the King's Peak, Utah's highest peak!!!! I have nothing to whine about with my measely 26.2 on a bunny hill compare to

your epic monstrous mountain race with all you mountain goats! YOU DID AWESOME smashing your PR by over 2 hrs. SO IMPRESSIVE!!! CONGRATZ!

Mike ~ Thank you! Ah the Fountain of Youth! It is located on Main St 200 N in Alpine. It's true, just ask allie, many a runners have drunk from that! Next time you're in town I'll show you where it is! :)

Luz ~ THANK YOU for letting me run with you two the first 5 miles. I LOVE every second and stride with you! I MISS running with you this whole summer! When you girls stopped at the pop, I thought for sure you would catch back up soon. I was bummed although I knew it was a special run for you and Cath together one last time before her move. I hooked up with the two girls that were running just ahead of us in the first couple miles; they too stopped and ended up finishing 10 min after me.

Anyway I wanted to cheer on others along the way as I passed them but I think most were in too much pain to want conversations. The only ones that would return a word or two were men. O well, I can't wait to run with you again sometime. Let me know when your life is back to some normalcy and want to do a long run together!

Doone ~ You totally understand how a cheering spouse feel! Larry to this day still talks about what a great support and cheerleader you are (from Boston) for Rhett. You and Larry need to show Ry how to watch a spouse in a marathon! Don't tell Teena I said that!

THANK YOU for your kind words! I can't wait to see you at Pocatello. Larry gets to cheer you this time! YAY!!!

I love your mantra, "Smooth, Fast, Strong" You are ALL of those for sure! Way to push through despite being so sick, , , Most people would have stayed in bed, but not you my courageous happy friend! You go out and do things and prove just how strong a body can be. I think your husband is such a wonderful support! What a guy! Great job and Great finish, I wish I could have stayed to see you cross the finish line, , , we were trying to hustle home to see the kidlins! I love all the pictures you posted!!!!

kellie ~ THANKS! Things have a way of working out, don't they? Let me know when you're free to do lunch!

Amber ~ Wish I was there to witness you break the tape. You are the SMOOTHFASTRONG one! SO PROUD of your win and smashing the course record. Can't wait to see you rock that sub 2:45 SGM!
