Long-Term Running Goals:

Run happy and healthy all the days of my life. Be an example and inspiration to my family.

Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

I LOVED UVM!!!

I was baptized on June 12, 1971, 39 yrs ago; so it was fitting that I got happily and gratefully "soaked" at UVM today! :D :D :D

Pre-race:
My SSF was SUPER NICE to pick up my packet Thu night. Then she drove me and a friend's brother to "Cougar Town" dark and early. I had a good feeling that she's going to PR today with that perfect rain, some tailwind and a downhill course. :D I, on the other hand had no competitive juice. :|  After Ogden's embarrassing finish, (an almost DNF if not for Maynard's helping hands), my goals for UVM were:
* Happy: Finish upright
* Satisfied: Finish upright without charlie horse
* Ecstatic: BQ (need 4:15 for the gezzerette divison)

The start:
We got to the start with 30 min to do the pop and clothing drop off.  Called LuzyLew with no answer! :(  The staging was a cluster with the pops lined up in a square down the road from the start. Anyway, we made our way to clothing drop off and was soooo happy to see AmberG and MarcieJ, Maynard and KellieS and the Heidi's. :D 8-) :D   Teena, Maynard and I lined up together a few feet behind the 3:40 pace group. The cannon sounded at 5:45 (15 min delay) and off we went.  Teena disappeared like a flash. Maynard and I hung together.  It was a stunningly beautiful morning with misty low hanging clouds, light rain, vibrant green mountains, horses in charming farms and homes.  Some cute girl in bandanna (impersonating KellieS, I'm sure :o) ) gave me a love pat on the tush when she and her bandanna clan ran past.  I absolutely LOVE running with Maynard. He showed no sign of having run a tough 21 miles SP mountain trail just 6 days ago. :D What a stud! :D

The run:
At mile 5 aid station Alisa and Lex gave me water, powerade and took my headband for safe keeping. Alisa looks beautiful and skinny! :D :D :D Thanks for the cheer and well wishes! Mile 8 was a good uphill, I told Maynard to go on ahead as I didn't want to slow him down. I was so looking forward to mile 9 aid station where Andy was volunteering. When I got there, instead of yelling for water, I yelled "pickles, pickles, pickles!" The volunteers must have thought I was out of my silly mind! Sure enough Andy was there to give me a baggie full of pickles. What a guy! THANK YOU! Andy! I chomped down two. Soon Maynard ran by, I offered him some pickles which he declined! Then off he went and I wouldn't see him again till at the finish.

I glanced at my Garmin a handful of times paying little attention to pace, running nice and easy. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with other runners. I "cheered" the spectators one of whom named Sabrina. She would show up every 2 miles with such a bright smile and cheer that I had to give her a hug. I was surprised to see my hot hubby at mile 12.85 cheering on the north bound side of the road and again around 20.5.  I hollered "choo-choo" as I ran through the tunnel. I took a potty break at the half. When I emerged from the temple of doom, my Garmin said 2 hours and some change. PERFECT!!! The canyon walls were stunning, Bridal Veil Falls was gorgeous, the mountains were luscious green. I congratulated the kilt-wearing Scottish gentleman for running on a super GREEN Utah day! Somewhere around mile 14, Marcie Wood caught up to me and that's when I found out Lowell DNS :(. These downhill canyon miles were made extra sweet by the tailwind. I had ditched my gloves earlier but was glad that I kept my arm warmers. The tailwind turned into a bit of headwind or sidewind once we got out of the canyon. It was not bad at all, could've been a hot June day with sun beating down on us. The rain had stopped and was quite pleasant. Surely the running gods were smiling upon us today.

University Ave had always seemed a long stretch of road to me; but because of Cougar's detail description, I knew it was only 6 miles to the finish. When I ran past the Canyon View apartment where my missionary son lived during his freshman year, I got choked up with the thought that he will be home in 6 days!!! :P Then I thought about each of my children who graduated from BYU...my heart overcame with joy and gratitude. :) I can honestly say that with the 20 marathons I've run, this is the only one where I had no tough or difficult moment. I felt surprisingly fresh at mile 23 as at mile 2. :) However, in the back of my mind, I worried that charlie horse would rare its ugly head at mile 25 like it usually did, so I kept the pace nice and easy, side-fiving the spectators, thanking all the police officers, even patted the cheeks of a baby. :D :D :D

At around mile 24.5, I saw Kelli in her cute skirt running back on the course. She had come to run friends in like she did last year.  I was overjoyed to see her :) !  She really helped me through that scary overpass when both my shins started to cramp up. I took the downside of the overpass easy and safely made the couple of turns in the parking lot. THANKS Kelli for running me in!!! :D I "sprinted" to the finish with the roaring cheer of Forumites and Bloggers. My time was 4:05:07. It was awesome to see MrsFit at the finish.  Teena, my SSF, was first to greet me followed by TomSlick, Huans32 and RivertonPaul who went to pick up my drop bag and negotiated a very nice GrandSlam schwag for me! THANKS! While lining up to get my race shirts (which they ran out of, btw), Maynard appeared before our eyes! I swear he's like a guardian angel! What a sweet heart! :D

The post-race bash at Cougar's:
Hubby being the punctual guy drove me to Cougar's at exactly 12:30. :) THANKS to Cougar's hospitality and his daughters' great organizational skills, the food was delish! It was so fun to visit with everybody (Rhett, Alisa & Lex, DonGardinero & family, Maynard, BeMo & Co, Slick, MarcE and family, and of course all the Zimmerman clan). :D :D :D I got a surprise call from my SSF that I took 5th in my AG and she gave the plague to Slick to bring to me. The web result showed that the 4th place gal had the same chip time as mine, perhaps 1/100th of a second faster, not that it matters! It was so fun to see everyone at Cougar's home. THANK YOU Cougar for hosting the party! :D :D :D THANK YOU everyone for a PERFECT day! I am the luckiest girl to have such WONDERFUL friends who truly care. I love you all sooo much!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Possible contributing factors to NO charlie horse today:
1. Perfect weather: light rain, overcast sky, tailwind, cool temp of high 40s to mid 50s.
2. Eating 2 pickles at mile 9.
3. S-cap at mile 19.
4. Compression sleeves.
5. Fairly straight and nice gentle downhill of the last 10K.
6. Last but not least my SSF prayed that I would not have charlie horse.

YAY!!! No med-tent trip this time!!!!  :) :) :) :) :)

Hi Mike ~ I heard you ran a great race at UVM! Wish I had seen you! Yep, UVM was like a parade! Seriously with so many friends there running, cheering, volunteering! I may make this a yearly event!

allie ~ It was a GREAT day! If I were a competitive runner, I would have made this a PR race! It had all the elements for fast time!

YOU ARE THE BEST!! I wish I could have been there to cheer you in. I am so happy that Charly did not show his ugly face on this race. It sounds like such a fun and happy race. Tell Pres. Smooth I was sorry I didn't get to watch the race with him.

You are such an amazing woman, wife, friend, runner, etc. You inspire me to improve who I am.

Congrats again.

From LuzyLew on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 18:31:47 from 208.187.197.42

I did not stop smiling the whole time I was reading this report. Pickles & S caps! Baby-cheek-pinching! Tailwind! Hot Hubby! 6 BYU grads! Baptism day. You are so filled with vim and vigor, fire and flame it's made me want to run another marathon this very weekend. You are, as always, an inspiration. I'm so glad you had a spectacularly easy (and yet, award winning) race. You're happy day, made all of us happy to read about it. It was a beautiful day wasn't it? Just think--3 more days ....Congrats on a great race, and reminding us, as always, what to be truly grateful for. XOXO

From LuzyLew on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 18:33:38 from 208.187.197.42

Maynard's my hero too. I was there at the SP 50. 21 miles there was an Ultra unto itself. Way to get the job done, yet again!

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 23:33:55 from 174.23.236.38

Timp ~ Thanks! It was a great day for lots of the FRBs and Flyers. You should make it out here to run this one.

KP ~ This marathon course is a walk in the park compare to your tough tough Xterra race!

Jefferey ~ Thanks! WiseOne!

Flatlander ~ I saw a guy with similar outfits as your pix running about 0.1 mile ahead of me most of the race. I wondered if he was you. Going over to read your race report now.

SSF ~ ONLY you would say such SUPER NICE things about me! You're making me blush! :) :) :)

I am SO SO SO SO SO HAPPY for your PR!!!! You're the INCREDIBLE AWESOME ONE! Love and missing you already!

Doone ~ THANK YOU for your kind words. I wish you were there too. It was so nice of Rhett to come cheer us. I am sure it was very hard for him to stand on the sideline. Larry and I still wish one of our sons would find a girl as wonderful as you!

Luz ~ I just love you! Wish I would've seen you and Catherine! Next time for sure! Yes, Maynard is my hero in more ways than one. Can you believe he's running Ragnar this Fri on an ultra team? He's a manimal!!!! :)

From RAD on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 00:56:11 from 67.172.229.125

I'm with Luz - big smile the WHOLE report! (except Lowell's DNS, I need to shoot him an email!).

Nice work and I am SO SO glad you had a wonderful race with amazing friends in beautiful weather with NO charlie!!! Smooth, you are one amazing woman and I seriously hope that I can be more like you every day! Recover well and enjoy your reverse taper till the next one! Do you have to do Des News full or is your next one Park City?

From Smooth on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 01:02:56 from 174.23.236.38

Rachel ~ One thing I notice about doing the Slam is the recovery is shorter with each marathon. My left shin was a little sore yesterday. Today I have no pain, just the little cold I caught from Emi. I could have run today but we spent the whole day at the Hogle Zoo...so FUN!

I do not need to do DNews full...so yep, Park City is the next marathon!

From RAD on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 01:08:48 from 67.172.229.125

Walking around the zoo is GREAT recovery - I did it last Wednesday :)

Wow, PC is next on the list huh? I'm still thinking about doing that 1/2. If I do it, seeing you will definitely be the highlight! :)

From MarcE on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 01:49:51 from 75.160.164.30

Awesome run, Smooth! Andy's pickles must have kept Charlie away!!! Hooray! Glad to see you back to your old speedy, non-cramping, self! It was awesome seeing Larry on the course..he gave me a little boost of encouragement when I needed it! See you in October!

Marc ~ How was your trip to Yellow Stone? It was soooo good to finally meet Beth and your boys. You have a wonderful family!

Yep, Andy's pickles did the trick!!! So wonderful to have special friends there for the support. I think it's so cool that you got your family doing the medals at the finish!

Kellie ~ THANKS for the love-pat. You're soooo cute. It was a boost to see you and the Heidi's. Wish you were going to Boston 2011 too.

Paul ~ I'm HAPPY that you're HAPPY! Thanks for picking up my BAGS!!! How's the blister?

Congrats on your race Smooth. I enjoyed the report. I'll have to try pickles sometime. Ha.

Hey, I just noticed that you finished 25 seconds behind one of my best friends, Amy. Dark hair, ponytail, black tights, white shirt mid-thirties. Small world.

From Smooth on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 00:39:40 from 174.23.236.38

vinh ~ THANKS! How's your training for SGM coming?

Scott ~ Small world indeed! I remember leap-frogging with a girl who fit your description, awesome runner!

Did I hear you're running Bryce Canyon with jun this weekend? HAVE FUN!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 12:22:31 from 198.241.217.15

Congratulations on a wonderful race, Smooth. I am just stunned that you've run a marathon a month for the last three months. You are a super woman.

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 15:26:53 from 71.219.93.114

I just realized today that i never came and read your race report!! GLAD I REMEMBERED! You are such an amazing woman, and an inspiration to us all!!! I am glad that you had an "ecstatic" race and were able to hit your goals of BQing and enjoying the race. I was so happy to run the last little bit with you, I would have been sad had I missed the chance! I only wished I had made it back farther...oh well.

I did not know about the baptism anniversary. VERY COOL!!!

From Smooth on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 18:10:16 from 174.23.236.38

Carolyn ~ THANKS! But really I'm quite ordinary. there are quite a few runners doing the Grand Slam. I'm tempted to run DNews in July...depends on how busy I'm with family vaca and stuff.

Kelli ~ I was so happy to see you. You helped me so much in alleviating my fear at that time. BTW, my last 0.38 mi pace was in the mid 8. That had never happened before...usually a death march! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Have fun at Ragnar....your favoritest running event!

From Kelli on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 19:31:44 from 71.219.93.114

I am so glad I could help! You really were running strong, you did not even appear tired!

Ragnar is my favorite, BUT Scott is not running it with me this year so I am kind of sad. On the other hand, Ashly is taking is place so that should be fun (or at least interesting!)

From Scott Wesemann on Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 14:06:49 from 66.239.250.209

Smooth- Yes, I am running a 40 miler in Bryce Canyon with Jun next Wed. I am soooo excited about it.
