Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

The much anticipated *hare-brained idea* finally came:  The Magical Midnight Moonlit Memories Making Marathon!

Thanks to my SSF's *pretty-brain*, it was a huge success and a blast!  She arranged 3 body guards (her 2 brothers and Fonz) to run w/ us in two shifts.  We were supposed to meet at Draper City Park.  I didn't think of little details such as the park is closed at midnight and we could be ticketed.  So at the last minute, Fonz offered to have us park our cars at his house which is about 0.75 miles from the PR trail.

We met at Fonz's at precisely midnight.  After snapping a couple pic we were off.   From Henry Day Dr to Vestry Dr are couple of good hills then down on Bangerter Pkwy to Highland Dr to access the Porter Rockwell trail.  Our two body guards, Johnny and Nick, were as funny and crazy as Teena.  With some good tunes they took off like jack-rabbits.

A few hours earlier, I ate a humongous BBQ dinner (which was my bro-in-law's carb-loading fest), ribs, steaks,  chicken wings, chowmein, rice, mashed potatoes, bread, salads, fruits, pies, all washed down with gatorade.   And with only 2 hours of sleep the night before, I was moving along like Dumbo the elephant whereas Teena was gliding along like a little bird.

Running under the bright full moon was magical, peaceful, serene and absolutely beautiful.  The twinkling lights from the valley below was stunning.  The night air was crisp, cool, clean with a scent of ripening hay/grass.  There was a gentle welcoming canyon breeze around the east bend.  The miles just flew by.  I absolutely love running with my SSF!

We stopped at the Draper Park, mile 7+ for drink.  Johnny was anxious to finish.  He took off back on the trail and we never saw him again.  We reached Fonz's at mile 12+ and waited for Johnny.  Apparently he ran past the turn-off and never made it back to the house.  Nick ran back on the trail with us to look for Johnny and he ended up with over 14 miles.

Fonz was our 2nd shift body guard, a much better running partner.  It must be hard for him to run twice as slow as his normal pace.  He recently ran a 16 min 5K.  At mile 14+ we debated whether to make it a 20, 22 miler or full marathon.  If we covered the same route it would make 24 which Teena refused to do, saying that it's lame.  True, but was it smart?  This was supposed to be a training run so I sticked to my gun to keep the pace nice and easy for the entire 26.2.   Teena and Fonz ran a few hundred feet ahead of me. Their chatters was all the music I needed.  The still night was disturbed by an occasional dog bark and a peacock squawk.

Our last 0.3 mile was all UPhill, Teena charged up the hill like a champ that she is.  I ran it and stopped at exactly 26.2 and walked the remaining downhill to the car.  No medal, no cheering crowd; BUT what great fun and incredible memories to be shared with my SSF!

So, my 4th marathon this year since Boston is my slowest at 4:18:58, yet nothing can compare to the joy and gratitude I felt running under moonlit trail with my SSF!

After a quick ice bath, shower, hubby drove Teena and I to the DNews finish.  We got there in time to see the Kenyans came in.  RAD & her running partner Baby Adam ran an AWESOME 10K.  Huans32 ran a PR and TomSlick had a GREAT 10K as well.  It was sooooo fun to cheer Allie, Gary, RivertonPaul and Twinkies and many other great athletes.  My sore ITB gave way to my coarse vocal chord.  I don't think I would be able to walk or talk tomorrow! :)

Here's my awesome bro-in-law, Gary (50), who flew in Thu night to run DNews.  He ran the Malaysia Marathon 3 weeks ago.  Today he ran 3:07.  He took a spill over a pot hole the first mile and got a bad road rash on his side and bloodied his shoulder and knee.  He said the worst part was the two exploded gu's in his pocket which made a sticky mess the whole run.  He looked so strong coming in...took his youngest, Jessie, by the hand and crossed the finish together.  WHAT A STUD!

Here's RivertonPaul breezing in to the finish so smoothly on his *training run*!

I spotted Twinkies and cheered my heart out.  Everyone said it wasn't Twinkies b/c he didn't have his Twinkies shirt on.  But I found him and here's the pic to proof that he ran an AWESOME training run, just a regular Sat. run prior to his next week's ultra!  What a manimal!

Thanks for cheering me in. You guys looked great for having ran all night. What fun.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 19:54:12 from 174.52.45.85

SSF ~

I have never run a marathon that I have enjoyed more ... EVER!!! You truly are my soul sistah forever, I love you so so so so so so so so so so much. I was just talking to Ry and telling him how lucky I am to have a friend whom I feel so close to. You have no idea how wonderful I think you are and how you amaze me. You ran so incredibly well. Seriously!!!!!

I couldn't have asked for a better moonlit run. It was everything I could have wanted. Running with my SSF, some good hills, and some fast surgers every now and then to kick my trash. It was PERFECT!!!

THANK YOU FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL "HARE-BRAINED" PERFECT MEMORY!!!

Here's to many many many more of your ideas!!! :) :) :)

From RAD on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 20:08:43 from 67.172.229.125

LOVE it!! You two are simply amazing, I can't believe how fresh and wonderful you looked this morning, you would've never known you had just run a marathon and not slept a wink! I'm glad you had a wonderful time and stayed safe!

From RivertonPaul on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 22:39:00 from 97.185.0.183

Awesome midnight madness! You guys are crazy awesome.

From Jeff L on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 23:29:14 from 74.81.252.152

Whoa. You guys are crazy...and the best people to have cheering at a marathon. Funny, I actually ran with Gary for several miles at the end of the race. He was very consistent and just kept plugging along.

From calliej on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 00:56:04 from 97.126.150.237

You are awesome!! Sounds like a lot of fun.

From Nancy on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 09:44:13 from 76.27.19.206

Sounds like a fun run. You make marathon runs sound so easy and fun. Your slowest marathon is faster than my fastest that I ran over 10 years ago. I couldn't survive on the amount of sleep you get or even run a 5K with such a small amount of sleep.

From Andy on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 10:14:09 from 198.60.114.178

Sounds like you 2 had a great time with your hare brained idea. That is a good pace for a training run. Well done.

From Toby on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 13:03:11 from 216.194.124.37

That sounds like such a fun run! Hooray for you for cheering everyone in after such a long night! AMAZING!

From Scott Wesemann on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 14:32:25 from 75.162.91.8

That sounds like a fun adventure and I enjoyed reading the report. :) Reading about the pre-race meal made me super hungry though. :)

From Maurine/Miles on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 14:49:42 from 97.117.65.30

That was a great idea. I guess we missed each other by a few hours. I hit the Draper trails about 6 on my way down to Provo.

If you classify this as a marathon, can I classify my run as an ultramarathon?

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 15:00:26 from 174.52.45.85

Miss you already. Already trying to figure out when we can do it again!!!

How do you feel?

Did you wear your heels to church? :)

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 15:31:08 from 174.23.218.43

SSF ~ How come you're not at church?

I am feeling great!

Wore my lowest heels to church!

How are you feeling?

I tried to talk Larry out of our vacation so I could run next Sat. with you and the chumps and JonA and Kelly! He gave me a stern look and said I could run anywhere I want in Yellowstone/Jackson!

I miss you already! Let's do it again soon!

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 15:33:24 from 174.52.45.85

SSF ~

Payton is sick and so I had to split church with Ry. I went to Sacrament Meeting and the first part of Sunday School! :)

I feel surprisingly well. I think I will take the next few days super easy just to make sure. I am tight and a bit sore, but no pain or injury! :) LOVE IT!!!!!!

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 15:34:53 from 174.52.45.85

Maybe I should come to Yellowstone so we could run together!! :) :) :)

Yeah right.

I'm actually going to see if I can somehow make it work to get in a medium long run in PC on Saturday. But that would mean missing two chump runs in a row. Dang. BUT, I have never run at that elevation and I want to see what I am in for. :)

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 15:43:32 from 174.23.218.43

Running the PC course is EXCELLENT idea! Well, that was part of the original hare-brained-idea. You will love the course and the temp would be a tad cooler too. Don't let the elevation scare you! Just remember your inhalant...did you get it back from Johnny? Ry should ride along side you; he can play golf there later. The PCM course passes thru a golf course. Wish I could run there with you. I was actually hoping to do a 20 miler next Sat. there!

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 15:46:33 from 174.23.218.43

Sorry Payton is sick! Hope it's just a 24 hr thing!

I am glad you have no pain! One step closer to running NSAIDS-free! Keep it super easy the next couple days is smart!

From Maurine/Miles on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 18:21:20 from 97.117.65.30

The elevation will just make it a little slower. I can feel it in PC - but not seriously. It is the 17 miles uphill that really wear me down - but a gorgeous course.

From allie on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 18:49:04 from 174.23.226.74

what a fun idea! you two are great. i am sorry i missed seeing you yesterday but thanks so much for being there to cheer on all of the runners.

congrats to your bro-in-law on a great race. sorry about his fall, though. i saw that pot hole in the first mile and it scared me that someone would get caught up in it.

From Rhett on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 19:34:39 from 74.36.34.151

Great job Smooth and Teena. Sounds like a lot of fun. With only 2 people in the inaugural Midnight Moonlight Memories Making Maratghon, it will make it easy to double or even triple the size of the event in future years.

Tell Gary Hi for me. Sorry to hear about his wipeout. He is an amazing runner.

From jun on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 21:54:10 from 63.224.106.149

Oh my gosh, I just read this. Love it! Love it! Love it! That is so crazy and awesome.

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 23:13:45 from 174.23.218.43

Matt ~ What a treat to get to see you race 2 Saturdays this month! Probably my only chance! since you're a ROCKSTAR especially on mountain trails! GOOD LUCK next week! You're AWESOME! I was happy that Teena finally got to meet you.

Rachel ~ It was so fun to see you and hang with you and baby Fartlek. It was so you to race a 10K, hide between two parked trucks to feed/nurse Adam, change his diapers; then without missing a beat, jump in to cheer the marathoners. Not to mention a SUPER SPEEDY FAST 10K pushing a stroller just ONE month postpartum. You are incredible! It was nice meeting your REAL American mother too!

Paul ~ Is that all you can say? AWESOME? jk! It was so fun to watch you run in although I liked last year's version better when you were running in circles around JohnnyV. :)

Jeff ~ You ran an AWESOME race! You have trained so hard and so smart! It was a real treat to see you come in. Gary says he never talks to people during a race; so I figured he wouldn't know even if I told him to look for you.

You know you are a local elite around here, don't you!

Callie & Toby ~ We need to get you girls to join us for one of these runs. You will love it!

Andy ~ Glad you approved of my hare-brained idea. I need to uphold my harem-duty to keep Teena from her diehard runnings. One of these weekends you have to come run with us. But then it might backfire...you know how Teena has this *beat the boys* instinct! :)

Scott & jun ~ this is like a walk in the park compare to you guys's adventures. I could never do peak jumping, rock hopping, trail racing, crazy ultra distances like you boys! But thanks for the kudos, coming from you adventurous souls mean soooo much!

Maurine ~ Dang! If we'd know, we would have met you somewhere along your ultra ultra crazy adventure solo run! You're incredible! Running 35+ miles on a hot hot day unaided solo across two counties! AMAZING! Yep, you need to classify yours as an ultra adventure marathon! Bet no one has ever done anything as courageous as you!

allie ~ Sorry we didn't come to the finisher circle to personally congratulate you. But seriously, you are incredible! It's an honor to be there to cheer you. Teena and I can't stop talking about you. We admire everything about you...witty, intelligent, humble, classy, world-class athlete, funny, friendly, kind, etc etc I can go on and on about you! GREAT RACE! CONGRATZ on your PR!

Rhett ~ we didn't *advertise* this event b/c both Ryan and Larry thought we were nuts, crazy, out of our minds! Thanks to Teena's persuasive power, we were able to secure body guards. Anyhow, from the possible feedback so far, I am sure the marathon would quadruple in size in no time. We'd love to have Doone join us...you too, if you promise to help rein Teena in! :)

From AmberG on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 23:41:20 from 75.162.144.246

Smooth- You girls just AMAZE ME!!! WHat a fun idea, you two have more energy bundled up in you then you know what to do with :) How fun to run under the moonlight and I'm glad you had bodyguards! Who needs sleep??? GREAT RACE on your 4th marathon this year!

From Kathie on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 23:42:32 from 63.248.105.188

Love this idea next year I want to be a bodyguard!

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 12:38:59 from 204.113.19.47

So many crazy people.... so little time.... :)

From Kelli on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 14:58:40 from 71.219.99.30

All that late night running and then you get all glammed up to watch the race? WOW!!!! Sounds like a blast, i am glad you two had bodyguards!!!

From Smooth on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 16:52:14 from 174.23.218.43

Amber ~ I'm all about fun! Full moon comes around only once a month...so very precious! Felt so lucky to have a great friend such as Teena to share it with. Having her brothers and the speedster Fonz therre was extra bonus!

Kathie ~ Teena and I debated back and forth on calling you to join us. We were so torn!

You are ON next time! Body guard, sister wife, harem, whatever! Now that we know it's doable we won't hesitate any more!

fly ~ Ain't that the truth! Never enough time!

Kelli ~ We really lucked out with everything! It could have been a diaster!

what glam? You know I don't do glam. Barely had enough time to shower and throw on a T-shirt.

You'd be awesome to run night run with...no sleep just like all the Ragnars you've done! Next time!
