Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Picked up Teena on the way and we both wondered aloud: "why are we doing this?"  My reasons were to be with friends and to cheer my brother-in-law in the marathon.  He flew in from Hong Kong a day earlier.  He had been in 5 countries the last 5 days.  That guy is an animal.

I had a ton of fun hanging out with Teena, Julie, Shimelle, Bec, RAD and her sister and Slick.  It was so AWESOME to watch Allie come in so strong and beautiful.  We were cheering our heads off.

I am so proud of everyone doing so well...Teena with her HUGE PR!  Allie with her outstanding win!  Gary with his 3:08 "training" run, Lowell pacing and helping a girl with an asthma attack.

This is only the third time I've run a 10K;  had no idea how to run these.  I thought I would be happy with sub-50 and place top 10 in the AG.  Hadn't felt good the last two days and with the warm temp I knew it would be tough.

Here are my splits, what a total amateur/idiot I was:

Mile 1 ~ 7:15 (went out WAY TOO FAST and knew I would pay for it later, but it was fun blasting down the hill with bunch of younguns.)

Mile 2 ~ 7:25 (my mouth was getting so dry, I needed a drink so bad.)

Mile 3 ~ 7:57 (saw hubby cheering at the bank.)

Mile 4 ~ 8:01 (lungs are burning, ITB is complaining going down South Temple.)

Mile 5 ~ 8:04 (what's with that guy handing out donuts?)

Mile 6 ~ 8:55 (finally got a drink of water and doused myself with another cup of water. I wanted to quit and went into marathon mode.  I was a road kill to zillion people here.)

0.2 mile ~ 8:56 (legs were burning, gasping for air and thought I would die, kicked it in when I saw the clock ticking 49:xx)

Finish time: 49:31  THANK GOD it was over!

I had never watched the winners come in at a marathon before (only on TV).  It was amazing!  It was so fun to cheer Johnny V and his pacer, Riverton Paul who kept doing 360 to make sure Johnny wouldn't get passed by another guy.

After congratulating our fellow bloggers, Teena and I ran back on the course to find Lowell and run him in (3.5 miles).  That amazing guardian angel was helping a girl in distress.  She had a very scary asthma attack.  Lowell stayed with her and she ran her 2nd marathon with over 15 min PR.  Her first marathon was the "monsoon SGM" last year.

Continued the Pioneer's Day celebration with a wonderful delicious grilled steaks, chickens, shrimp lunch cooked by none else but my awesome brother-in-law.  Did I mention that guy never stops?!!!  What a great day!

THANKS everyone for making this race SO SO SO SO FUN!  Have a great weekend!

Andy,

THANKS! I have so much to learn about running these shorter distance race the smart way. Nevertheless, I HAD a great time.

Marion,

I think that's why I do not like 5Ks and 10Ks, all that heavy breathing and hanging with dear life.

Dale,

Wish you were there too. It was a fun one. 2700 participated in the 10K. It's amazing the blogger friends found each other and hung out together.

Rachel,

THANKS! It's always great to see you at races! You did awesome. Your family is so supportive. Was good to meet your sister. There were quite a few disgarded donuts few feet ahead. What a tease that guy was.

allie,

Thanks! You ran a very smart and gutsy race. CONGRATS on the win. I read and re-read the DNews Sport article on you. What a great photo of you and your grandma.

Michelle,

The feeling is mutual. You are so cute. Your big brother is as nice and cute as you. I am so glad I got to know you a little better. You are a great friend to so many.

Kelli,

I told Larry I wanted to run Lowell in because I was inspired by you at UVM. You worked so hard to set up the Bluffdale race and then came to Provo to support and run so many of us in. I cherished that help you gave me. I missed you so much. Wish you were there. But was glad you ran Spaniards with an AG win. So, all's good!

Paul,

You're amazing! Was good to see you and your fam.

Kellie,

Thanks! You are so kind. Wish you were there. But I'm glad you and Kelli had a great time.

What was with that guy handing out donuts? For a second this race reminded me of Boston, except in Boston people CHEER for you, not just sleep on the side of the road. That race route was an interesting sight.

Nice job on the race, you held pace the whole time! Way to watch out for all of the giants stampeding around you at the beginning of that race. I was kind of chuckling to myself when I saw little Smooth just enjoying the run while everyone made a mad rush getting around her. Guarantee you caught up with at least half of those "weekend warriors."

From leslie peterson on Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 11:33:30 from 76.23.61.78

Smooth, you are the womanimal!!!! I can not believe you can do so many races and not burn out, you are so tough! Great job! I am glad you had so many friends enjoying the day with you!!!

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 13:17:06 from 71.35.210.4

Bec,

I always feel like a baby panguine in an elephant stampede at EVERY race except for Ragnar.

I thought the same thing about the people on the parade route. Hey, where's the cheer? One guy even made rude comment like: O here comes the slow pokes. How dare him. I wanted to say: let me see you run this, you knuckle head! But I was gasping for air, not words. I got better cheer from the RHPC on Provo River doing a leisurely jog than this "Days of 47 celebrated 10K". I think the sleepy spectators were annoyed we woke them up.

Leslie,

I ran the DNews marathon last two years. So this is a "step down" year for me. Last year I ran one race every other weekend starting from DNews to St. George (Provo River 1/2, Park City Marathon, Spanish Fork 1/2, TOU marathon). It was a blast.

great job -- you are awesome :)

that spread for pioneer day sounds really really good :)

I had no idea that you ran a race every other weekend last year. You are crazy! But yes, that does sound fun. How dare that guy that said those mean things at the race. He was the one with the box of donuts, wasn't he? Now that I think about it, I should have picked up the box and ran with it.

Greeat job, Smooth! 7:15 mile!!!! Your reports are always fun to read. I can't believe you and Gump went out for a 20 miler on Saturday...you're amazing!

Always easier doing it with a dear friend.

Smooth, your races are such an adventure. Next time take the donuts and see if he can catch you!!! Glad you had a great day and your feast sounds soooooo good to me right now.
