Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Ran with Carolyn to pick up Karen for 8.  Saw Marsha started out her run on my way home.  So ran with her and had a nice chat.  Marsha was my secretary when I was RS president.  We are in different wards now; we had so much to catch up on.  Nice cloudy day, windy going east, air filled with smokey scent from burning fields.

Your garmin thing still isn't working darn it!

Great run though!!!

I am so jealous of all you people that can just keep running with little to no pain! How do you do it?

Haha, I love seeing all the squigley lines on your route on garminconnect. You are amazing! This whole time I was thinking you were just resting/coping with your busy life, but no, you've been running!!!

Great miles Smooth! How fun to catch up with a good friend while on a run. I bet the miles flew by.

Annie ~ I think it's actually okay that it's not *clickable* so people who are lurking may be less incline to find out?!

Marsha who just started running asked me the same question today. I guess unknowingly I *pushed* her today because she was running in the 11 min pace every other day for 2 to 3 miles. I have no magical answer or any word of wisdom to offer. The only thing I can say is be consistent with your running, be careful with build-up whether it's speed or distance. Little pain is good as you know your body is pushing out of its comfort zone. Gradual adaptation will get your body to the point that it graves running and pretty soon the *second wind* or endorphin takes over and you're used to the little pain or niggles! That is when you have to be careful to not overdo and get overuse injuries. Sorry I am rambling. But I think you are hooked and you are doing great. You are a MARATHONER!!!

Brooke ~ Running is my way to cope with busy life. Hehehe! You know that feeling, it is more painful to NOT run!!! But you are so patient in listening to your body and coming back nice and easy. So glad you are having a small break between semesters. GOOD LUCK! :)

I am absolutely hooked and so grateful that I FINALLY was able to run a marathon. It is just incredibly frustrating running with inevitably an injury to follow. I told my husband that I run every run with the thought of not being able to run the next day because I get an injury. I shouldn't think that way I suppose but I can't help it. I am in much better shape and much stronger now than I was before my last injury so I am hoping that with the correct training and injury prevention that my body will let me do what my mind has wanted to for years!

Note to self: NO MORE STAIRS!!! :)

I think the injury thing gets better with more and more running, THAT or we just get dumber! But, then again, maybe we get smarter with how to fix the injuries?? I DUNNO!!!! I know I was plagued for 2 years, then last year was perfect, and now I have some pain here and there that is annoying and worrisome. I guess it just comes with the territory?

Love ya Smooth! Glad you had a fun run with a great friend-it is always good to catch up!

Nice run again. I hope the smoke didn't bother your lungs.

I agree I think we just come to know that running hurts and we live with it.

From Smooth on Wed, May 04, 2011 at 11:58:07 from 67.2.77.198

Annie ~ I think there are different types of injuries. There will always be some kinda aches and pains. Like Kelli said, it's part of the game. I call those training pains that given proper rest and adaptation will eventually make us stronger.

Then there's the overuse injuries which creeps up on you or suddenly appears. This is when reviewing your training history comes into play. You can evaluate and identify either a pattern of the chronic problem or the cause of the acute injury.

Running is harder on the body than most people realize. It does improve your fitness faster than most other activities.

Yep, be careful with jumping back into training or adding new activities so soon after a marathon. Your muscles and joints may still be in recovery mode even though your minds feel otherwise. A lot of it is by trial and error and no two persons respond to the stress and demand of training in the same way. Even with the same person, each day and each race is a whole new game. ENJOY the process! Aches and pains will eventually pass away or replaced by new ones! What doesn't kill you make you stronger, right?!!! Hehe!!! :)

Kelli ~ THANKS!!! LOVE YOU TOO!!! I MISS YOU!!! Hope you are recovering from all these ultra running. You are the epiphanmy of a STRONG and TALENTED RUNNER. I shall live my dream vicariously through you! :)

Kathie ~ The smoke really irritated my airway. Was hecking up a storm when my hubby called and I tried to explain in between coughing...he said: "What? You're smoking now?" :)
