Run happy and healthy all the days of my life. Be an example and inspiration to my family.

Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Couldn't go down the stairs w/o knee pain this morning; so decided to NOT run.  Went to Gold Gym, a first EVER for me!!!

35 min elliptical (resistance and incline at 6)

25 min bike (moderate hills)

10 min abs and adductors.

***Been having pain at the insertion point of the right tibial tuberosity for the last 4 weeks.  The pain would come mid run and get worse post run.  Decreasing mileage has helped some.  My son, Eric drove down from Dallas (where he's having his Residency Interviews) today to spend couple of days with us! We're sooo happy to see him!!! :).  Haven't seen him for over a year!!! :) :) :)  Between his and my daughter's exam/assessment, we all concluded that I have patella tendinitis.

Conservative treatments may include REST, DANG IT! :(, adjusting body mechanics, strengthening the quads, patella tendon strap, iontophoresis, corticosteroid injection, massage.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/patellar-tendinitis/DS00625/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs

Guess I better be a good girl and listen to my son who advised NO running or any activities that cause pain/more damage to the patella tendon! :/

I know it's hard, but it will be worth it to not be injured beyond a conservative treatment approach. Just sit back and enjoy the family while you can! You've raised wonderfully smart kids...now YOU have to listen to THEM! :)

Hope you recover quick!! Hang in there!

From DonGardinero on Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 15:03:54 from 67.2.94.44

Sounds like you could be out for quite a while if you don't treat it properly. Keep cross-training and when you start lifting weights to strengthen the quads, start out with very light weights and over time, keep increasing the weight. Also, when doing leg extensions with weights, do it with one leg at a time. That way each leg will get equally strong.

Hope that help, but I'm sure your son already told you what to do.

From Nancy on Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 17:33:12 from 76.27.19.206

It is very hard to rest when you get tendonitis, but at least you can cross train. I've had it in my knees, my feet, my fingers and back. Take it easy and enjoy the time with your family.

So Sorry about the injury!! Dang it, be careful.

From Andy on Wed, Jan 12, 2011 at 12:51:48 from 159.212.71.77

Too many injuries going around. Take care of yourself. You are too much of a die hard to be kept down for long.

From flatlander on Wed, Jan 12, 2011 at 14:43:39 from 198.207.244.102

Hope you aren't out for long, bad timing on this since we have relatively good running weather down here.

From leslie peterson on Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 12:20:57 from 174.52.158.81

Smooth, I hope you are feeling better soon! Take good care of yourself!

Do like lots of Grannies..get yourself a rocking chair, some yarn, a few knitting needles and RELAX...(yeah, like that's gonna happen :) Get that knee well soon, Smooth, I'm sure this will be excrutiating for you to sit still.

From glidergirl on Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 15:41:31 from 155.97.238.134

Oh! I'm so sorry Smooth!!!! How sad. You just want to be like the rest of us injured-going-to-the-gym folk, huh. :) If it helps, soon you'll find a good rhythm with cross-training and it will be really nice...not as good as running, but it definitely makes life tolerable. :) Hang in there, and get better!

From Smooth on Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 23:55:39 from 67.232.119.27

Rachel ~ You speak w/ such wisdom! :)

Chad ~ Me too! You are not injured, are you? :/

Dale ~ GREAT tips on doing leg lifts separately, I wouldn't have thought of that! THANK YOU! :)

Nancy ~ How long do these patella tendinitis last? Wish I could say I can or enjoy xtrain. Never had injury that sideline me in the 5/6 years that I've been running! :/

Scott, Callie, Kelli ~ THANKS for the support! You're great friends! :)

Andy ~ Tell me about it! I've got places to go and races to run, you know! :)

Flat ~ I was so looking forward to perhaps run a few miles w/ you while here and such great Houston weather to boot! Bad timing indeed!

Leslie ~ How are you doing my friend!

Marc ~ You are so funny! I needed that laugh! :D

Brooke ~ Look at you...so positive about being injured! You dive into this xtraining thing with gusto...elliptical, cycling, swimming, all sorts of classes and Teena's sprint tri idea! I need your enthusiasm! You rock! You're gonna be back running faster and stronger than ever! :) :) :)

I thought that you were going to be doing very little if ant running the next two weeks, while on vacation? What happened???

From cheryl on Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 00:22:56 from 67.166.68.69

Hi Smooth, just reading about your knee injury. I had knee surgery a few months ago for a torn meniscus, so I know what it's like to have a hurting knee. My doctor says to avoid the leg extension machine because it puts too much pressure on the knee. He recommends the leg press and hamstring curl machines, plus just simple leg raises for strengthening the quads. He said do 100 of those twice a day and you'll eventually have super healthy knees. Good luck, I hope you get better fast.

I thought that you were going to be doing very little if any running the next two weeks, while on vacation? What happened???

Take a break and get it all together.....times running fast and we'll be in Boston before you know it?????

From Smooth on Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 00:30:39 from 67.232.119.27

Slick ~ The weather in Houston is perfect and I couldn't resist last Sat. Anyhow my knee pain started back in Dec when I ramp my mileage up to 80 then 77 then hill running the following week...very foolish!

cheryl ~ Thanks for the tips on leg exercises. It's good to know. I have no clue what is good or bad for the knee.

Sorry to hear you had surgery to repair torn meniscus. How is your knee now?

From Chad on Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 10:53:13 from 168.177.153.5

Smooth - My knee was sore back on our run on Christmas eve but felt good enough to run. Bad idea, it swelled up like a balloon. It still isn't any better so I'm seeing a doctor next week.

From cheryl on Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 12:22:46 from 67.166.68.69

My knee is doing better but it still aches sometimes after I run. I'm spending a lot of time on strengthening exercises so hopefully I can avoid problems in the future. It's funny, because in all my years of running, I never had any knee problems, no pain, no nothing really and then just one day I guess I ran too hard and tore the meniscus. I was doing a lot of hill running at the time. I think hill running is good but maybe in small doses. Good luck!

From Smooth on Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 12:40:15 from 67.232.119.27

Chad ~ Sorry your knee is still bugging! Hope the doctor has some good solutions for you! Sending healing vibes your way! Hang in there!

Cheryl ~ Wow! That must've been quite a shock. You are a great runner and a very experienced one too. I guess injury can happen to anyone even the best and elitest. Glad to hear you know what to do to prevent future problems. I need to do more strength exercises and pay attention to the body...so much to learn! :)

What kind of exercises do you do?

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 22:20:37 from 71.219.84.215

Did Cheryl say hills in small doses???? YEAH, come back Cheryl!

Take care Smooth! You have many running years ahead of you yet, so get properly healed up girlie!

From cheryl on Mon, Jan 17, 2011 at 18:54:44 from 67.166.68.69

Smooth--I do lots of core stuff and leg raises and the leg press and hamstring machines. Just lots of things to strengthen the core and lower body. Kinda like what Kelli does, though I'm not quite as hard core as she is. I wish I could hold a plank for 3 plus minutes!

From Smooth on Mon, Jan 17, 2011 at 19:01:59 from 67.232.119.27

Good stuff, Cheryl! I have been slacking on core and strength. I really need to pay attention to that as I am getting older and older. It is the little things that keep us healthy.

I am sure you're doing much much better on the plank than me! I can barely hold it for 60 seconds! Very pathetic!

K, you motivated me! I'm going to do some core starting TONIGHT!!! THANKS! Cheryl! :)
