Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

RACE MORNING

After two days of rain, wind and cold, we were finally greeted by a sunny morning. We got to Hopkinton with 3 hours to kill. It's amazing how you can meet, find and even run into friends among 22,000+ athletes. I ran into twin sisters, Joyce and Jolene, whom I met at Ogden and Shauna whom I paced for her BQ last year.

I had trained hard and prepared well and was just soooo happy to be there with my Forum family. I was especially excited for Teena and MarcE who almost didn't come. I only had one more promise to fulfill. My friend, Lowell (who was supposed to run Boston'09 with me) had been bugging me for 12 months about not connecting with him at the start and to run with him at Boston and SGM. So, with my cell phone in hand and Teena's help we went looking for him. By the time we found him and brought him to the "forum's pad", everyone except Lark, MarcE and Hillbilly have left. I was devastated to "loose" my running grannies. O well, I just have to go with plan B. :|

The RACE

Lowell had assured me that his training was going well despite developing a blood clot in his calf 3 weeks after SGM. He told me we would run my PR time of 3:58. I corrected him that I needed to run sub 3:57. What I hadn't count on was Plan C. He had brought with him a friend, Brent, a 66 yr old whose fashion taste was as hedious as Lowell's. These two geezers cracked me up with their antics, picking up camping pad and blanket that other athletes have left behind at the village and stuffing them in their drop bags. It took them FOREVER to get ready to go. Lowell had to take picture of the F-16 flying overhead and a bazillion group pics. Good grief, wave 2 had already started 10 min. ago! :x

Did I mention Lowell has unusual fashion taste? He was wearing purple tights and purple long sleeve shirt UNDER his shorts and short sleeve shirt which has his "identity" printed front and back. Brent was wearing red shorts that looked like swimming trunk, a green sweat shirt and knee high socks. They both had wind breakers and fanny packs on. Lowell also wore a winter hat that has ear flaps which he later switched to a bright green running cap. Needless to say, they were WAY overdressed.

I could tell Brent was having a hard time keeping up with the pace. Mile 1-3 splits: 9:23, 8:58, 9:13. There goes my hope of a 3:50. I was okay with that. Brent had a bottle of chocolate milk in his fanny pack. It leaked all over his shorts and legs. I helped him discard the bottle but he would not throw away the sticky wet fanny pack. Lowell also needed a hand in shedding his l/s shirt. He told me he'd wait till Wellesley to have the girls help him shed the tights.

Oh, Lowell announced that he wanted to stop at the even number aid stations. Darn, I had planned on odd number aid stations. O Well, we ended up stopping at every one. Mile 4-6 splits: 8:39, 9:21, 8:43. I tried my best to keep track of my two "Idaho studs". Laughed so hard that my belly seriously was hurting. Brent finally told us to leave him at mile 10. Mile 7-10 splits: 8:32, 8:47, 9:06, 8:34

We passed some runners with F75 and M75 bibs on their backs. There was even one with M80. I felt so smart explaining to Lowell what the bibs meant. I lost Lowell somewhere around Wellesley. Hmm, which lucky girls got to help him strip down the purple tights? I had so much fun greeting the Canadians and Koreans, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, lotsa cancer supporters, a guy celebrating his birthday and Gwen (an amputee) as I passed them. My running was relaxed and easy telling myself to save my legs for the Newton hills. Ran the half at 1:57:59.

I drank gatorade at every station. It tasted too sweet so I chased it down with water. I took gu at 5, 9, 13, 17, 21. I did not look at my Garmin except when crossing the timing mats. I thought about what my friends and Larry would see when the alerts come to them. 8-) Mile 11-16 splits: 9:02, 8:45, 8:56, 8:41, 9:05, 8:56.

Here comes the infamous Newton Hills! I just kept a steady effort and tried to keep my breathing under control. I later found out why my breathing was labor. Lowell had given me a pair of arm warmers which I shed around mile 3. He told me to make knots and tie them around my waist. I think they must have constricted my abs because the area just below my ribs were swollen and tender to touch even days later. Anyhow, I was determined NOT to walk the hills even though some people were walking faster than I was running. :? Mile 17-21 splits: 9:28, 9:25, 9:10, 9:30, 9:45.

The crowd at Boston College were incredible. Their scream almost overpowered my screaming quads. I tried not to charge down the back side of Heartbreak knowing I would pay for it later. It was soooo hard to stay focus. Wish I had ear buds to block out the loud bells and the constant screaming of BC BC BC. Wish I had some ibuprophen to ease the pain. Wish I had my running grannies to help pull each other along. :(

First sign of cramping came when the Citgo sign appeared in the distance around mile 24.5. I knew I was in trouble. Somehow I was clustered along the right shoulder, literally running into walkers, drunken spectators, even along side a motorcycle cop with its occasional sirens. The noise gave me a splitting headache. My calves were angry with threats of charlie horse, and my quads were burning. My 40K time was 3:48:28. The thought of disappointing my running friends in not getting a PR made me cry  , but I just couldn't muster enough power to go any faster. I had to walk the slight uphill under the MASS pike tunnel and Hereford where I passed the Hoyt's father and son team. I gave them a weak encouragement/congrats. On Boylston, I could hear Doone's and my hubby's cheering my name, but I couldn't pause or turn to acknowledge them. The finish line kept moving away from me. Mile 22-26.55 splits: 9:05, 8:48, 9:29, 9:39, 10:48, (0.55 mi @ 9:36) My official finish time: 4:03:16, 25 seconds slower than last year's time, but did BQ with 12 minutes to spare. :D

The UGLY
After crossing the finish line, I was walking with the throng of runners, when all of a sudden, my left calf seized up, then the right calf went into a convulsing grip. I collapsed in a heap of pain crying like a big baby. It was Park City 2008 all over again, except this time was much worse. Almost immediately the volunteers lifted me up onto a wheel chair and whisked me into the huge med tent. They dumped me onto a cot like a rag doll. My legs were in a vice grip and horrible pain. While a PT worked on my calves, the physician scanned my bib and asked bazillion questions while a nurse started an IV on my arm. They pumped 2 liters of saline in me. They wouldn't let me get up b/c my blood pressure was 80/50. I was freezing cold. My clothes and 5 flannel blankets were soaked with my perspiration. They kept me there for almost 2 hours. My poor hubby waited and waited for eternity at the family reunion. I finally left the med tent with swollen face and extremities and gingerly walked my way to find my drop bag, changed into dry clothes and met my hubby on Stuart St. It was 5pm when I got back to the hotel. Had a quick shower and met the gang who waited patiently for me to walk to Legal Seafood.

I felt better after getting some food in me and drinking some diet coke at our post-race dinner celebration. THANKS Rhett & Doone for treating. Larry and I really appreciated your generosity!

Post race dinner at Legal Seafood! Thanks to Lark!

Well, can't say I never cramp at Boston anymore, so sad! But, I'm happy with my preparation and training. I feel so very grateful for such wonderful forum & FRB friends. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Y'all make running more meaningful to me and Boston the more special because of you! :D :D :D

Wow Smoothie!!! You had quite a bad expierence near the end and well after the race. That sounded horrible. I'm so glad you recovered from that. Too bad your race plans got messed up, but hey, you persevered and still qualified again. It doesn't get any better than that. I am so envious of all that get to experience the Boston Marathon and I hope I can qualify while all of you are still going. I think being there with friends would make it so much better. Awesome job, Smoothie!!! Now get recovered for UVM....or is it OGden next?

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 04:32:15 from 174.23.172.155

Dale ~ Sure hope you BQ and run Boston with the gang! That is what makes Boston so fun! My next marathon is Ogden in 3 weeks! yikes!

From ChrisM on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 06:12:40 from 86.154.108.0

Well done on the race!

I can associate with the cramp afterwards! After my first marathon I walked to find my parents, I managed about 200m before suddenly both my calves cramped up like crazy and I had to grab a wall quick since I was standing on my toes it was so bad!

From Andy on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 07:38:12 from 198.60.114.178

I'm sorry that you had cramping issues again. It sounds like you still had a great experience anyway. Never worry about disappointing your running friends. That isn't possible. Your training was great for this race and it will carry over to the rest of your races this year.

From vinh on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 09:32:51 from 24.211.101.133

Great race report Smooth! I was almost sure you were gonna PR by like 10 mins. Your training was awesome. I'm glad you got to run it with some great people. I think St. George will be the HUGE PR for you this year. Hopefully I"ll have the pleasure of running it with you. You are my hero Smooth. Keep up the amazing work!

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 10:54:44 from 71.219.75.178

Smooth, you are truly the best!!! You did not disappoint ANY of us at all, we are just so glad that you are okay!! I was a little worried about you after dinner on Tuesday night----you could barely walk! You and Scott were quite the pair!!! But, heck, the cramping (Scott's, not yours) worked out good for me because now Scott has decided we can go again next year, YEAH!!!! I am so excited. LMK when it is time to reserve our hotel again so we can all be together, that was the BEST!

How was the graduation???

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 10:56:56 from 24.8.167.243

Wow, Smooth. You had quite an adventure, both with those guys during the race and with the cramping at the end of the race. At least you got the BQ, though not the PR.

It sounds like the overall experience was fun and I'm glad you got to do it with friends.

Good luck in Ogden.

SSF --

1. I absolutely love and adore you!!!

2. You are more than amazing!!!!

3. Only you can take so much in at one race. You appreciate things more than anyone I know. :)

4. You definitely should have kept the lobster bib on for the pic!

5. I miss you already!

**** Congrats on another BOSTON!!!! ****

(Hope you are enjoying all of the family festivities. You never did tell me what movie you saw??? You ready to movie-train with me? I could be really hardcore with that!!!)

Thanks for sharing the race report with the pics. I'm sorry things didn't work out as planned, but as always your positive spirit wins the day.

From Rhett on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 13:33:25 from 74.32.222.202

Smooth, I loved the time we had to spend with you and Larry and the rest of the gang in Boston. You two are amazing. It's funny that as I think back on my Boston experience, the most memorable part was our little Sunday devotional, not my PR. Thank you for sharing with us your story and thank Larry for his inspiring words which keep ringing in my mind. Doone really had fun watching the race with Larry and Ryan. Maybe someday she will be running it with us. Get those legs better soon. You are one tough lady.

From Rhett on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 14:05:09 from 74.32.222.202

Oh yeah, next time you talk to Gary, thank him for me too. All weekend long I kept asking myself "What would Gary do?" and I kept on eating carbs. During the race I kept doing it as I would get to the aid stations and not want anymore Gatorade, I would say in my head "What would Gary do?" and I would take the Gatorade even though I really wanted to the water. He's a carb loading inspiration!!!!

From Bec on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 14:18:05 from 76.23.55.210

Smooth, I had no idea all of happened to you! I am crying now because of the awful experience you had at the finish area. Thank goodness that cramp did not come earlier. I still am amazed that it happened to you again.

What a great experience you did have though. Another Boston to add to your book. You keep inspiring so many runners, including myself and I commend you for it!

So is your room already booked for next year? :)

From Nancy on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 14:29:54 from 76.27.19.206

I'm sorry you didn't PR. It was very nice of you to help so many people and stay with them. Great job. You are Awesome!!!

WOW! That is one heck of a race. those buddies of yours had to be hilarious! You are such a GOOD friend! :) I hope that you are feeling all better by now.

CONGRATULATIONS on another amazing marathon!

wow Smooth what an adventure--and a mighty fine time despite all the difficulties! Way to finish!

From Maynard on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 18:24:47 from 71.213.42.198

Is MarcE the only one that wore his finisher's medal to dinner Monday night? I thought that was, like, mandatory! Good on ya, Marc!

Congrats on the finish Smooth, inspite of the difficulties there at the end. Better at the end than before, eh?

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 19:19:34 from 71.219.75.178

Maynard, I would have worn mine but it did not match!

From crockett on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 19:59:39 from 71.36.67.218

What a crazy adventure. You sure know how to party it up at Boston, even in the medical tent. Congrats on another Boston finish and BQ.

From RivertonPaul on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 00:15:43 from 75.169.2.73

I had no idea you were is such distress at the finish. Still looking forward to a great year of running from you. You are inspiring.

From april27 on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 01:12:21 from 99.188.251.180

I get so scared about my first marathon! but I guess if you can still like running even after being carried away and filled with saline I suppose I can still keep pushing through with my training! LOL

From RAD on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 02:09:45 from 67.172.229.125

Okay, the first part of the story you had me laughing my head off! I can totally see Lowell and a crazy friend doing/dressing like that. BWAHAAHAAA! I did feel bad that you'd lost Kathie though, I mumbled at Lowell for that one!

I'm glad you got to feel good on a few miles, but ugghh...the headache, and craziness you describe makes me want to lay down. Then, the cramping oh Smooth - I'm SO sorry! I wonder if the cramp at Porter the week before was a bad omen :( I can't imagine what Larry was going through waiting for you, but I'm glad there were wonderful people there to care for you and send you off swollen full of fluids!

It sounds like it was successful in the end and the trip was a good one. You always find the best in every situation - a new BQ is more than I could say, so I'd count it MORE than successful! Going back next year and the promise of a full new year of training. Love you Smooth!! Thanks for the report, I hope that someday I get to join all you crazy partiers :)

From LuzyLew on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 19:08:07 from 69.169.167.157

I've been waiting for your post. I had no idea you had such a hard last mile. I waited for you on Stuart Street for about a half hour. I was so sure we'd have ended around the same time (and we did!). I had no idea you were in the med tent. Before the I was with the Utah Grannies. I tried to call you, but you probably had given up your phone. We looked and looked for you. I really wanted to see you on race day and I was so sad I didn't. It was good to read your report though, I'm glad you had a fun time at the start! Those guys sound hilarious. You are such an amazing athelete, your training is beyond compare. I was sad to hear that cramping killed your finish--but still BQ with that much time to spare. You're simply. I spent the rest of the time with my kids and my friends. It wasn't the Boston marathon weekend I'd dreamed of--but I did it and at least I got to spend SAturday with you! That was such a highlight. I'll always be really glad you told me about the tour. Thanks again to you and Larry. You are truly the queen of Boston! Thank you, thank you, Thank you!! I couldn't/wouldn't have done it without you!

From allie on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 20:50:46 from 67.177.0.102

Congrats on another Boston finsih Smooth. I enjoyed your report.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 15:00:30 from 174.23.172.155

Dale ~ That's the beauty of a marathon. It's challenging and you never know what the end result brings. Takes faith and hard work! BUT I LOVE it! Yes, I am running (NOT racing) Ogden in 19 days and UVM a month after that!

Chris ~ If you figure out what cause severe cramping, let me know, I can use the help. You ran an AMAZING PR marathon at Brighton! CONGRATZ to you!

Andy ~ You have such mental fortitude. I really need to learn that. I just gave up and felt horrible about disappointing my friends. That day's temp was PERFECT for a PR. I felt that I had trained hard and smart this time for a PR. STINK that I missed the opportunity. But, that's how Boston is, dreams are made and dreams are shattered there, even for the elites when I read about their stories! THANK YOU for your ever encouraging words!

Kelli ~ I think Scott and I could barely walk because we sat in that booth for dinner and got stiffened up. I was fine the next day walking all over town and up and down the subway. Graduation was cold, rainy, sitting, walking up and down the Marriott Center. But well worth every min. of it to see David's achievements.

SSF ~ We went to Date Night. Not good to take David with us. It was too raunchy. Is there any good movie out there? That Letter to Juliet looks like a nice chick flix. Larry likes to take me to chick flix. :)

Timp ~ Thanks! Wish you were there to party with us! Things always have a way to turn out alright even when not according to plans. I will PR next time! But I did have a fantastically fun time in Boston.

Rhett ~ I can't begin to tell you how much we admire, adore and love you and Doone. Seriously, Larry wants a daughter-in-law just like Doone. You are a great example to us and an AWESOME athlete, father, husband, HP leader and friend! I will pass on your message to Gary.

Bec ~ You are so cute! Wish you were there this year. Yep, Larry already booked the room. I think he is more excited about Boston than me!

Nancy ~ Sometimes I just run with my heart instead of my head. My first half was totally fun running w/ Lowell who's an incredible person. The second half was tough running with my head and just didn't have the mental toughness to bear the pain. I think I may try drug next time. I usually don't take any drug; but may be it would help?!!

Marion ~ Lowell is funny, smart, generous and totally hillarious. His friend, Brent, whom I met just before the race was as genuine and funny too. Too bad he was not in as good running shape as Lowell. Lowell finished 4:22 and I think Brent finished 4:40ish. Yes, I'm recovered. No soreness today.

April ~ My happy goal for Boston is to BQ at Boston so that I can say I deserve to be there. I LOVE Boston no matter the time. It's great to be with friends and enjoy the histories of that great marathon. To PR would be icing on the cake!

Maynard ~ I almost didn't get my medal b/c I collapsed before I got to where they hand out the medals. Finally remember to get it after I got out of the med tent.

I had to fight *charlie* off the last mile. Thought I was in the clear after the finish. STINK how those cramps can creep up on me. Yes, I am glad it didn't seize me on the course or I'd have to crawl or DNF!

Davy ~ Those BAA volunteers held me hostage for 2 hours. They took off my shoes. I hope I NEVER party at the med tent again. They can't even give you drugs, only saline. Sheesh!

Paul ~ I had no idea I would be in distress either. STINK! I'm trying to figure out what went wrong. Thanks for your encouragement.

april27 ~ Don't let my ugly after finish collapse scare you. It's all part of the game. You're not gonna have that kinda disaster. Just remember pain is temporary. I am feeling fine and looking forward to another marathon in 19 days. Keep on truckin', my friend!

Rachel ~ I can't flaw Lowell for that. It's my choice to look for him and run with him. I just hadn't count on Brent's struggling to keep the pace. Their funny antics had me in stitches. I just wish Lowell was able to keep up the pace so I could have someone to run with the second half.

Luz ~ I am so BUMMED that I did not connect with you, Kathie and Marcie. I know you girls would have helped me tremendously to pull off a sub-4. I was on pace until the end. When you called my I was, actually Teena was using the phone speaking to Lowell trying to locate him.

If there's any regret about Boston this year...it is that I did not get to run with you or Kathie or Marcie for even just a few miles! I'm glad you had a GREAT time in Boston. I hope you'll go back and do it again. Your children are amazing and YOU are amazingly wonderful!

allie ~ THANKS! It means so much to have your support and encouraging words. Some days I feel like I don't belong in this FASTrunningblog...too old...too slow. But kind words from you change that attitude. THANK YOU!

Scott ~ Thanks! I don't see how you would enjoy my report. It's long! and I sounded like a big baby. But seriously, you're great! Boston is well worth every penny and minute and training for!

Smooth, I had the same experience after I finished my first 50-miler. I went into the med tent and they held me hostage with IVs for two hours until they thought my heart rate was low enough. All that did was scare my wife. I haven't stepped into one after a race ever again, about 80 races. But low blood pressure can be scary. You probably would have fainted. Happens to my brother all the time. I just make sure I'm close enough to catch him going down.

Oh and with my fainting brother, we encourage him to wear a sign during a race if he's passed out on the trail. "I'm OK, this is normal, Just leave me some food."

Crockett ~ That is not a bad idea! Seriously, I lost the window of opportunity, you know, how you're supposed to eat and replenish the carb within the first 30 min after running that long? I didn't eat or drink until way past 7pm that night. STINK!

And yes, I have fainted before when my b/p went that low. However, I would have felt much better if they had fed me instead of dumped 2 liters of salt water in me. All it did was make me puffy and took me 6 days to loose all that water weight. STINKIN'overzealous med tent people! :)
