Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

THANKS Rachel and JonA for coming out to run with me!!!!

Yesterday, I was on my feet from 4-10:30 pm helping with the wedding reception.  We  had everything all set up nicely outside; then came the rain, gathered everything inside, then took everything back out again 'cause the rain stopped for about 45 min.   Then back inside again 'cause the rain came and never let up.  It was a lot of fun seeing so many friends.   Too bad we couldn't enjoy the lovely garden.

I could not fall asleep.  My back was killing me.  My feet were okay 'cause I wore "grandma shoes".  I dozed off for 2 hrs at the most.  I got to the JRP at 6:10 am and thought everyone had left or didn't come.  To my surprise, Rachel, JonA, my neighbors, Wendy, John, their daughter Stephanie, Beth and Mary were there waiting.   THANKS everyone for braving the rain and waited for me.  We missed jun, Marion, Maurine and LuzyLew, Kelli and Scott.

JonA, John R., Rachel and I started out together; then the two guys dropped us.  John turned around to go home leaving Jon alone to speed up the hills like nothing.  He caught us on the way back to the car.  The three of us ran south for another couple miles; then Jon turned around to leave.

Rachel was the best running partner.  She was so positive.  I did not like the wind and rain.  Our clothes, socks and shoes were dripping wet.  I felt cold only when we stopped running.  We saw flocks of pelican, black cows and their babies, a mule and one skunk.  Rachel has trained and worked so hard.  She is a talented runner.  I have no doubt she is ready for Ogden and will run a fantastic time.

My Garmin was dead.  So I'm copying off Rachel's.  16 miles.  AP: 9:02.  Splits: 8:49, 8:44, 8:33, 9:45 (hills), 9:15, 9:08, 9:16, 9:08, 9:10, 9:00, 8:48, 8:58, 9:03, 8:58, 9:08, 8:47.

Driving home I saw a 5K race in progress right on the road in front of my house.  So I got out and cheered and ran some with them.  I heard about this race last night from a friend.  She "forbade" me from entering this race saying:  "You can't run this because I want to win it."  Darn!

Busy getting set up for Stake Conference, hosting the dinner.  I had to miss my nephew's baby funeral.  It is also my son's Prom day/night .  I am feeling happily tired!

Nice run. We had all of the rain, but NO wind :) That was one of my main deterrents for running Lehi today :( Sorry about the rain storm.

Is is a broadcast Stake Conference? We are having it too, and I hadn't heard about a broadcast, well I probably was not paying attention ;) Too many busy bodies at church to catch many details :)

From Smooth on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 16:29:53 from 71.36.87.147

Marion,

Glad you had a fun and windless run.

Our stake is huge (13 wards and one branch) that we broadcast it from the Stake Center to two other buildings. JonA's Kelly is singing at tonight's mtg. I get to sing in the choir tomorrow morning. FUN!

From leslie on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 16:35:07 from 76.23.61.78

Another warrior woman battling the storm! Way to go Smooth, after being on feet all night and 2 hours of sleep. Crimanee you are a tough chick!!!

From Smooth on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 16:38:00 from 71.36.87.147

THANKS Leslie, I couldn't have done it without Rachel. I'm so ready for dry, nice weather. Wait, it looks nice out now. That's just Murphy's law for ya.

From marion on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 16:38:01 from 71.213.126.85

Yeah- we broadcast ours too, but you know how every fourth one is a general broadcast to the area? I can't remember when the next one of those is due.

From Smooth on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 16:43:12 from 71.36.87.147

I think that's Regional Conference, once every 3-4 years? We had one last year. My hubby loved it 'cause he didn't have to speak.

From Kelli on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 17:08:51 from 71.219.95.5

Sorry we had to bug out this morning---and all for nothing because the temple celebration practice was postponed due to the rain (it was supposed to be outside, they had to move it inside but LATER when the baptisms were over). However, we would have been late as we did not even roll out of bed until 6:20!

Rachel is great to run with. She is positive. In fact, you two are the most positive people I know!!!!! Glad you two had a great run!!

From marion on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 17:10:17 from 71.213.126.85

Here is an article about the broadcast Stake conferences I am talking about http://nn.byu.edu/story.cfm/60772 They introduced them a while back, but we seem not to have had another one since the first one.

From JulieC on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 17:25:31 from 67.42.22.184

Yay taper time for you right!! You got it done and with style. Always good to do a simulated marathon like run, under sleepless conditions. Was that 5k the Renaissance Academy one that Allie came in first at? Her mom put that one on. I don't know where the academy is so I thought it might be the same one.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 17:45:40 from 97.117.57.193

Awesome job, Smooth - and in horrible weather. Sorry I missed your run, but since I only see the fast runners for a few minutes at the start, it is easier for me to hang with my homies.

From leslie on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 17:47:27 from 76.23.61.78

I love it! I am one of your homies!!! Go gangsta girl!!

You are my numero uno homie!

From leslie on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 17:53:33 from 76.23.61.78

Cool! Thanks homie! Hey, Maurine was your jacket supposed to be water proof? And does anyone know of a brand of waterproof jacket that actually works? I would love to invest in one, if there really is such a thing. My windbreaker did absolutely nothing for the water.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 18:06:24 from 97.117.57.193

I'm actually going to spray mine with water repellant stuff to make it water repellant again.

There are some waterproof jackets out there - but the good ones cost serious $$$$. Plus, you also have to consider that waterproof also means you sweat inside them.

I prefer water resistant - they help some - but not in a serious downpour. I like my jacket (usually) because it has the vents and shoulder zips that allow me to vent body heat. I think I have washed mine too many times over the years and worn down the coating.

From RAD on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 18:21:12 from 67.166.99.8

Smooth, you give me too much credit!! I guess all my whinning must be in my head, because I didn't like the rain/wind this morning either...and remember if you wouldn't have shown up I would've gone home and gone to bed :) Enjoy your dinner and conference and prom night...you've got another late night infront of you :)

From JulieC on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 18:30:57 from 67.42.22.184

Plastic garbage bags. The only true water proof "sportswear" and they are real cheap, stylish too. You could get a mickey mouse one with hood from disneyland and tie the sides so they don't fling around. I wore a target plastic sack on my head for the SGM last year. Missed out on the garbage sacks they were passing out. Yet to find a $100 match to the garbage bag.

From leslie on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 20:31:26 from 76.23.61.78

Thanks Maurine, Harold was saying the dry cleaners will scotch gaurd them for you, I forgot about the sweating issue...hummm. I have an idea, lets NOT run in the rain!

From MarcE on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 22:20:12 from 206.225.68.52

I'm sorry that it rained so much for you this weekend. Bummer about the wedding reception..poor bride. :( You plan and plan and want everything to be perfect and whammo, rain. Blech!

Smooth, didn't you just run a marathon 2 weeks ago? Like at Boston...just over 4:00? And now you're out running 16 miles at faster than your Boston pace? So much for that 26 days to recover..you're my idol!

Marion,

The last Regional Conference that include all of Utah County was held in Sept 2008.

Kelli,

I'm so so so glad you ran with Scott. You're so amazing keeping up with him. You can run with anybody at any pace. I wish I had your talent.

Julie,

Yes, that was the Renaissance Academy 5K. That charter school is just a block north of my house. I'll have to check out Allie's race report.

Maurine, Leslie,

I had my Boston jacket which kept me dry but too warm. I took it off a mile into the run. I've seen people run in poncho and garbage bag at SGM'08. I don't like either b/c they're too "noisy" and too big for me. I don't mind running in the rain but had to dry off as soon as I'm done or I freeze to death.

Marc,

I think I do better if there's someone to pace me. Thanks for the kind words.

Teens,

So grateful tomorrow is Sunday. Aaah! I will get some rest. My boy has been gone all day. He must be having a great time. LLL LLL LLL LLL LLL LLL

How was Stake Conference tonight?

From DonGardinero on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 23:37:40 from 75.162.173.119

OK Smooth, start tapering for Ogden. It's only two weeks away. LOL

From Smooth on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 23:41:55 from 71.36.87.147

It was wonderful. First we got to meet Elder Shumway, Elder Wilkinson and his wife. After dinner, Elder Shumway read from the scriptures and candidly talked about his appreciation and the greatness of the wives. Then I took Sister Wilkinson to sit by me. The talks were wonderful: 1) Reaching out to others. 2) The Mt. Timpanogos Temple President and his wife spoke on temple and covenants. 3) Elder Wilkinson talked about missionary work 4) Elder Shumway talked about Family. He's so funny. JonA's Kelly sang in a women double quartet, Our Savior's Love, beautiful voices. The dinner was simple, yet elegant and pleasing to the soul. I think everybody enjoyed it very much. The visiting authorities are always so kind and loving. I always get so nervous when Larry invites them to stay at our house; and then I'm so relieved that they choose to stay in the hotel. The Wilkinsons live in St. George. Their children run the St. George marathon.

From Smooth on Sat, May 02, 2009 at 23:44:53 from 71.36.87.147

Dale,

Yes sir! I need to learn how to taper properly. The hard part for me is to know how much to taper. Then the other part is the eating. The carb-loading is like "force feeding" for me. Why do we do it?

From Kelli on Sun, May 03, 2009 at 00:58:43 from 71.219.95.5

Smooth, Scott was out for a jog, I felt like I was racing. So, yes, I kind of kept up, but it was a wee bit too fast for just a training run!! It does make me wonder how come when we race we are so much faster then when we train. Adrenaline maybe???

From RAD on Sun, May 03, 2009 at 19:05:18 from 67.166.99.8

Glad to hear your Stake Conference was good! Where can I find info about the 5 miler you were talking about yesterday? I'm thinking I may do it...but then double back the course to do 10.

From Smooth on Sun, May 03, 2009 at 20:22:58 from 71.36.87.147

Rachel,

It's right above the shoe mileage on the top; also in the "Featured Announcement" on the right of the blog. "FRB 5 Miler for Frugality and Against Obesity". JulieC is thinking about it; and me too. It's a change of scenery for us to run on the last part of the Provo River Trail to the Lake.

From RAD on Sun, May 03, 2009 at 22:55:41 from 67.166.99.8

Okay, I'm blind! I found it...I'll definately think about it this week and register. I've never done the Provo River Trail so it would be a good change for me too!

What a great long run. My leg is not allowing too much mileage lately, but it is feeling better (like it is healing up).

My mom was so excited to see you at stake conference, she said that the conference was wonderful.

You are one busy, busy lady. Taper time for Ogden? I really don't know how you do it...one CRAZY lady! I love it!

From Smooth on Mon, May 04, 2009 at 11:45:26 from 71.36.87.147

Rachel,

You should definitely race the 5 miler. It will be a good tune-up race for you and build your confidence.

MrsFIT

THANKS! You're so kind! I LOVE your AWESOME running family! So happy for you.

Bec,

It was so good to see your mom. She's a ray of sunshine!

I'm glad to hear your leg is healing well. No need for long mileage. You're smart to listen to your body.

Yes, I'm tapering down for Ogden. This crazy body doesn't know how to stop.
