Long-Term Running Goals:

Run happy and healthy all the days of my life. Be an example and inspiration to my family.

 

Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!! 

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

 THANKS RACHEL & LOWELL for a GREAT 12 miler!  Ogden here we come!

Dr. Rachel confirmed it...I have ITBS.  She showed me some stretches and went as far as laying down on the parking lot to show me one I could do all day long in front of the TV.  What a great friend!  I should be good to go for Ogden if I #1 Faithfully stretch that IT, #2 Hydrate properly per Lowell's instructions.  

What a great morning.  So excited about the run that I was up at 4:30 am.  Picked up Lowell at their motel in Sandy and got to PRT right at the same time Rachel pulled in.  Lowell, Rachel, Annette and I ran the route we did on Easter Sat. 4 weeks ago. 

There are a lot more runners and walkers this morning.  The T. was perfect in the mid 40's, sunny, NO wind!  Lowell and Rachel took turn telling stories while I huffed and puffed and listened.   My IT was bugging me until it got warmed up.  Then it got really bad running downhill on the return.

My Garmin was still set at metrics and stopped after 9.66K.  I need to look at Rachel's splits later.  At mile 10, Lowell announced that we would run 1 mile fast and back down on the last mile.  Rachel obeyed and took off like the wind.  She has speed in them long legs and even turned around to run us in the last mile.  Lowell gave us some great tips and advice for Ogden.  I'm glad he came all the way from Idaho to run with us.

Lowell is a mutual friend of mine and Teena's. He's an awesome guy, funny, generous and caring. He's like a guardian angel. His beautiful wife came to Utah to show her quilt at the Quilt World Cup Expo all week. He came to be with her this weekend and so graciously ran w/ me. I hope to connect with him and his best friend at Ogden.

Those darn ITB!! :) You know wimps would NEVER run, it's far to complicated and requires far too much tenacity to keep doing it.

Thanks to you!! I'm so excited that I got to run with you and Lowell, he sure is a neat guy!! I'm also enjoying his advice...even though I'm not sure if he was just using a runner's lie or not :) It may take me a couple years to put it all to practice :)

Annette seemed to have a good time too..tried to call her, but haven't connected yet. When I'm not too lazy to go downstairs and get my garmin I'll send you the splits :)

Smooth - roll out that IT Band every night before Ogden. And try anti-inflammatories. I find the IT Band 'Band' helps keep the pain from hitting as quick. Also - during Ogden, try and stay on the crown of the road or switch from side to side to keep the irritation down on that left leg. Oh - and don't push the downhills too much - that can irritate it more.

Great run - you have a real neat social life in your running world. Mine usually involves a furry (dog) butt staring me in the face.

Careful with the ITB. Can't run through it, only gets worse. When I had it bad several years ago rolling it out seemed to help the best and also wearing a band. Eventually it went away when I had to lay off for two months after a knee scope.

THANKS for the tips. Where do you get the IT Bands? I've never used them so may be I shouldn't try them at Ogden? I run solo most of the time; not even a canine partner. The FRB has been a blessing, allowing me to meet great friends such as you and the gang.

Sorry to hear about your IT band. I know some OMT (Osteo. manual manipulation/treatment) that can help...one of the benefits of attending a university with a D.O. program. I'll call you to discuss. You should strongly consider sitting out Ogden. ITBS takes more time than you think to repair. Remember what kept me from running Boston 3 years ago...

Smooth - you can get the straps at any running store. They put pressure on the IT Band to try and keep it from rubbing and getting inflamed. I will tell you that it might not be good to run Ogden. It is a downhill course and downhills are hard on the band.

Of course - I'm not one to talk. My legs started spasming in the store tonight and I just had to torture myself on my foam roller.

See if it calms down and try a strap. You can run through the pain, but it will just make it take longer to heal from it. It depends how severe it is. I used one of my kids balls to roll over. Hurts, but does good. You want to roll clear up to the hip, but not on the knee. On the stretches, don't overdo those. Whether to do Ogden or not...you are asking the wrong person because I'm still planning on it and probably shouldn't.

I wanted to thank all of you runner friends of my Mom for being so loving and supportive to her through all her running adventures. It means so much to me that she has all of you that care so much. THANKS for the tips. You've been there so you know what it's like. You're right about the downhill aggravating it more. The weird thing about it is, it seems to come and go. It bugs me after sitting. I feel it most when I lift or bend my knee.
