Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Woke up late with tired body and achy legs. I must have DOMs from Wednesday's speed work. Debated whether to put off the long run for another day. Schedule calls for 17 miles @ 10:06/mile. Figured the legs are only good for a10:30 pace today.

Had breakfast of yogurt, cereal and milk before leaving. When I started on the JRP at 8:00 am, the temp was close to 70 with sunny sky.  Goal was to hydrate right and finish the run in under 3 hrs.  Carried 4 flasks of water on my fuel belt.  I planned to take walk breaks and drink every two miles.   I was already drenched in sweat by mile 2.  Mile 1-2 splits: 10:35, 10:13.  I didn't charge up the hill today and was glad to empty 2nd flask of water at mile 4.  Mile 3-4 splits: 10:16, 10:27.

There were a few walkers/runners and lots of bikers on the trail.  Saw the Baileys who are friends from way back.  When I reached mile 5, I was pooped.  Stopped to stretch and get the legs ready for the downhill trashing.  Mile 5-6 splits: 10:45, 9:44.  I could feel the left ITB protesting on the downhill and tried to take it easy.  The thought of cutting the run short crossed my mind and couldn't wait to get to mile 8 for my walk break and finished off the 4th flask of water.  Mile 7-8 splits: 10:06, 10:07.

Heavens must have pitied me, a huge cloud covering appeared.  That little bit of shade felt so good and I was able to make it to the car where I stopped to drink gatorade and fill up two flasks of gatorade, and one flask of water.  Ate a small energy bar, took off my left shoe to assess the old blister which had turned into a quarter size dead skin.  I didn't want to chance another inflamed blister; so I rubbed chapsticks on it (Kathie would be proud) and put a bandaid over it.  Mile 9-10 splits: 10:10, 10:14.

That little stop revived me.  Under intermitten cloud covering, I continued south with the same plan of taking drink and walk breaks every two miles.  Mile 11-12 splits: 10:28, 9:52.  Took a potty stop at mile 12 and drank the gatorade.  Lots of families were biking.  It was fun to cheer on the little children.  The cloud was gone by mile 13; couldn't wait to get to 14.   The trail was closed at 13.9, perfect, drank the 2nd gatorade and turned around...I might just make it.  Mile 13-14 splits:  9:27, 9:15.

The sun was beating down on me.  I just wanted to get to mile 16 where there's a water spout and drinking fountain.  I ate one gel, drank from the fountain and doused my head and torso with water.  Mile 15-16 splits:  9:21, 9:14.  That took about a minute but I was revived.  At mile 17, I drank the flask of water and picked up the pace for the last mile "home".  Mile 17-18 splits:  9:16, 8:41.  My car read the outside temp at 81 as I was pulling out.

Weighed myself before getting in the ice-bath...no gain nor loss...perfect!!!  Total fluid consumption:  32 oz gatorade, 52 oz water + ~ 12 oz from fountain = 96 oz.

18 miles in 2:58:22 including walk breaks but not the stop at the car.  Average pace of 9:54.  I think I met my goal today.

HAVE A HAPPY JULY 4th EVERYONE!!!

Such dedication and commitment to your workout. Way to go. Ice bath -- ouch.

You totally met that goal today! Great job. Your planning and running and pulling off your plans impresses me so much! I can not believe you drank that much while running, I need to get my body to be able to handle that this summer. I am sure it made you feel so much better!

It was truly hot today. It was odd how cloud and wind and cooler air rolled in, then left, then came back. Wish had gotten more of the cool air!

Have a great weekend!!! I think we should try to get together next week for a run or something! You are coming to run next Saturday, right?

From Smooth on Fri, Jul 03, 2009 at 18:07:26 from 71.36.65.107

Yes, I'm coming to run RHPC next Sat. What time and where are we meeting? I haven't heard from Marion yet.

About the hydration, I learned from Lowell that if we feel thirsty we are already 30 min behind on the hydration. He is convinced that my cramping issue stamps from dehydration and not electrolytes. I ran UVM w/o any cramps and didn't use any electrolyte supplement. I think keeping the body hydrated helps with muscle recovery. I sweat a lot today with the hot temp and was glad I stayed hydrated and finished faster than when I started.

Scott is working on the same thing---staying fully hydrated. He runs with a camel pack if it is anything past 10 miles.

I got an e-mail from Marion about 30 minutes ago. Did you get it?

From Smooth on Fri, Jul 03, 2009 at 18:56:19 from 71.36.65.107

Kelli, yes I just checked, thanks! I'm a little confused on the course though. I thought we were starting at South Fork and run down Provo canyon on the Provo River Parkway. It is cooler, prettier and nice downhill running. May be she didn't want to deal with shuttling runners up. O well. Actually it won't be bad to run up then back down either.

Oh Smoothi ... you are a ROCKSTAR!!!

You killed your goal!!! :)

I wish I would have known you were running later today. I had planned on starting my run around 5:30, but we didn't get to bed until well past midnight ... so I bailed on that idea. I actually consider coming down to Lehi and looking for you ... but figured I'd never find you. STINK!!!!

Love you so much!! Have a wonderful 4th.

Very proud of you on the hydration. :)

From Smooth on Fri, Jul 03, 2009 at 19:06:48 from 71.36.65.107

Oh Teena...I wish you had. I would have loved to see you even though I wouldn't have been able to run with you. I am so happy for your run though. You did awesome!!! Yes, we will get together next week.

From Teena on Fri, Jul 03, 2009 at 19:19:35 from 67.177.20.13

I would have ran a couple with you then a couple by myself then a couple with you then a couple by myself, etc. It would have worked perfectly! STINK!!! I should have followed my gut and came!!!

From Smooth on Fri, Jul 03, 2009 at 19:36:01 from 71.36.65.107

I was thinking about you on my run today; and about Kelli and the first time we all met and ran the Lehi JRP last year. I even thought about Mr. Turtle and if he was still alive. I am just SO EXCITED that you are running pain free and happy again. You will do wonderfully at TOU! I wish you could come down to run RHPC next Sat. But I understand, family comes first! LOVE YOU!!!

Way to go Smooth. I love that part of the JRP, it is so nice to run on. I'm glad you were able to have a successful day. It really makes things worth it when they work out. Great job.

WOW! I am so proud of you for getting out in the heat and running 18 miles. You are so strong and dedicated. About the race thing next week, I want to join you! I might be struggling a bit.

From MrsFIT on Sat, Jul 04, 2009 at 21:50:53 from 24.2.68.35

Wow Smoothie, your experience on Friday sounds like my experience today. I was drinking water like a fish......and I'm STILL thirsty!

From Smooth on Sat, Jul 04, 2009 at 22:07:28 from 71.32.234.26

jun,

JRP would be a walk in the park for you! I'm still admiring your amazing 50K accomplishment!

Bec,

Did you get an email from Marion? I will forward the info to you. It will be so fun to have you there next Sat.

Kristi,

You ran an AWESOME 17 miler, right on pace target! You are training so well. You're gonna go sub 3:30 easily at SGM.

It was HOT today! Keep drinking!
