Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

The RHPC rules!!!

This first inaugural RHPC 1/2 marathon was FUN, FUN, FUN, FUN, FUN, FUN!!!!

I got to run with this wonderful woman whom I "shadowed" on my very very first race way back when I started running and training for SGM 05.  It was the Provo River 1/2.  At around mile 8 my friend had to use the pop and I ran on.  I picked out this "veteran" lady and followed her the whole way 'till the last 0.1 mile when she out kicked me.  At that time along the trail, people would call out her name, Karen!  She was someone famous.  I only got to see the back side of her.

Fast forward to this morning,  as the race got under way, I decided to not make this a time trial run.   I found Josse's mother and decided to run with her.  Turned out she's Karen R., that same veteran/heroine I admired all these years.  It was a smart move as she knew that canyon and the course well.  Have I ever mentioned how "directionally challenged I am"?  She's an amazing runner.  We chatted the whole way.  I was glad I got to pick her brain a little.  She knew tons of runners and bikers who were out training.

When we got back to the park, Karen told me to go for it as I've been running her pace the whole way.  She told me that it's just "once around".  I saw 3 pink chicas about 0.25 mile ahead; so I chased after them and passed them as we rounded the course to the finish where all my PINK friends were cheering!  WooHoo!!!

THANKS Marion, MichelleL and Josse for organizing this GREAT race and for everyone bringing such great treats and creative prizes.  The finisher medals and the "grand" prize were to "dye" for!

After feasting on the treats, my tummy felt better.  Oh yeah, my tummy was bloated during the race.  It didn't like gatorade or perhaps the fajitas, salsa, chips, corn, veggies, berry tarts and fruits I ate last night at a party.  Anyhow, the tummy flet better and I ran back up the canyon, same route and back down for another 7 miles.  The weather was perfect, I drank 4 flasks of gatorade (2 during the 1/2, 2 later) and water from the fountain at Timp. Park for the second run.

Just as I pulled up into my garage, Lowell called.  He's in town and paid us a visit.  What a pleaseant surprise!!!  It was a perfect day!

THANK YOU RHPC's.  You girls are AWESOME!!!!

Splits: 10:16, 10:35, 10:54, 11:27 (we stopped to chat with Karen's friend, Nancy), 10:51, 10:19, 9:59, 9:21, 9:33, 10:27, 9:56, 10:10, 8:36, (2nd run) 9:53, 10:00 (up the canyon), 9:48, 9:15, 8:51, 8:48, 8:45.  AP:  9:54.

I made a comment on yesterdays post but again, you are so cute! Always so upbeat and happy! So, if you see Karen again, tell her what great legs she has. Julie and me were running behind her and I commented on how great they looked.

Where are your miles and your "race" report????

It was great to see you today and talk to you a bit. You are crazy for heading off to run more, just crazy!!! But it was beautiful weather, huh???

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 18:30:48 from 97.117.58.176

Great job, Smooth! You looked like you were having a ball. Since you were the runner in front of me and I know your jogging pace (for now) is faster than my race pace, I knew I would not catch you.

From josse on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 19:02:34 from 70.192.112.63

Oh I am so glad you met up with my mommy, and had a great time. You looked so good running around that park like you just had started:) Awesome job.

What a fun race Smooth!!! Wish I could have been there it sounds like a blast :) . . . . and nice job adding on some serious miles afterwards to hit 20 . . . . that's true running-love-ness !

From Leandra on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 22:24:04 from 76.27.81.221

Smooth! You rock! I could never have kept running after it. Nice to see you today!

From Smooth on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 23:23:18 from 71.36.67.77

Michelle,

I will tell her that. Funny how she was telling me that she got "jiggles in her legs."

You did awesome today. It was always fun to see you.

Teena,

Oh how I wish you were there. We missed you badly. It was fun. It was a "no sweat" training run. I don't get competitive, remember? except at the end when I saw an opportunity to bag some road kills. ;)

When are you going to "run around" me? I wish I was in your R.S. LOVE YOU!!!

Kelli,

I posted the total miles. I didn't "race" it so no report, sorry! It was fun picking Karen's brain. You were awesome today. I loved cheering you and others on your way down the canyon.

Maurine,

I kept looking back to see where you and Marion, or Leslie were. Karen thought we were the sweepers. It was so good to see you running so strong especially at the end. You had great forms. So glad you came and ran despite being sick for so long. Get that throat and lungs better.

Josse,

When I grow up, I want to be like your mom. How was your dad's run at Sundance. You have amazing parents.

Amber,

Wish you were here too. You would have loved it. You'd fit right in with all the other chicas.

Leadra,

Yes, you could've. I'm so OCD with my training schedule; it's pathetic. The weather was nice so it was easy to do the 2nd run.

20 MILES? WOW!!!! You are so dedicated. You rocked the "ChIcK" half today, good for you! Your pictures on Kelli's blog are so dang cute.

Way to run with someone that inspired you three years ago. Running brings us together!

Smoothie, I don't even know what to say anymore. You are amazing!!!

From Kelli on Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 01:14:28 from 71.219.89.21

Okay, at least you got the miles in there. When I looked at this entry last there were no miles on it!!!

I debated not putting it as a race since I did not race it either, but I changed my mind!

From RAD on Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 01:52:20 from 67.166.99.8

I was so happy to see you this morning! You are so amazing...I wish you could've seen yourself as you started kicking in around the park. I could hardly take my eyes off of you, you are such a BEAUTIFUL runner!!! Nice job getting your extra miles in as well. Very jealous you got to chat with Lowell today - if you hear from him again tell him hello for me!

From LuzyLew on Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 01:14:55 from 69.169.165.206

I can't believe you went 7 more miles to round out a 20 day. When I grow up, I want to be like YOU! I do! Thanks for the prize....though I'm not brave enough to try the chicken feet yet. Both my son and my daughter have been begging me to open the package so they can try them. I loved seeing you again, and yes, when I'm getting my miles back up there--I want to do a JRP run with you!
