Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Week 12 Schedule calls for 10-20 min warm up, 3 x 1600m @7:50 (1 min RI), 10 min. cool down.

Did the 8 dynamic flexibility exercises.   Warm up for 2 miles:  9:27, 8:51.  Did a little light stretching.  The girls soccer team arrived and did their 1 lap warm up while I was finishing up the first mile repeat.  Then as I was into my 2nd repeat, they did their 1 mile trial run and the coach was yelling out the time as we lap him.  That was fun, however, I pressed the wrong button and messed up my Garmin timing.  So I'm going off of what he yelled out for that mile.

1st mile @ 7:41 (a tad bit fast)

2nd mile @ 7:51

3rd mile @ 7:56

Cool down 1.5 miles running clockwise around the track:  9:09, 9:14.

TT: 48:49.  AP: 8:52.  Stretched thoroughly afterwards.  Could feel the ITB getting inflamed.

Not sure if I like this workout.  It's hard.  I wonder how much it benefits me as I feel like I can't get any faster.  Can a 53 yr. old woman improved on VO2 max?

Evening

The Beehives had yoga and smoothies for their activity tonight.  I invited myself.  First time ever going to a yoga class.  LOVED IT!  Lotsa giggling.  It was so fun.

I don't know if you can get your V02 max up any more - but I continue to get more and more impressed with your workouts.

From Teena on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 12:40:44 from 67.177.20.13

Sometimes I can't but help wonder if you are for real!!!!!

You did INCREDIBLE today Smooth. I guarantee every one of those girls on the soccer team were completely impressed as well as the coach. I am being 100% honest when I say that I hope that I can be even half as fit, good looking, fast, kind, cute, funny, spiritual, strong, inspiring, and as loving as you when I am 52.

I love you so much and feel so lucky to have you as one of my bestest friends.

Please do some yoga today. Is the pain in your knee, hip, or both?

I love you I love you I love you.

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 12:50:11 from 71.36.67.77

Maurine,

THANKS! I was starting to think that I'm getting slower. Thanks for being impressed.

Teena,

Stop already...you're making me blush! I LOVE YOU a WHOLE BUNCH!

K, I will do yoga today. I need it. The pain in my left knee. I think I will ice it now and do some foam rolling as well. Haven't done that for awhile. I also didn't ice-bath or stretch well on Sat. cause Lowell came. I LOVE YOU!

Wow Smooth! Great run. how did you know you needed to run them at 7:50? is that your 5k pace?

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 13:02:23 from 71.36.67.77

Kathie,

I'm following the book, "Run Less, Run Faster", FIRST program. The book has BQ training programs for different Age and Gender at the end. It is a 16 weeks schedule with 3 key workouts: Speedwork, Tempo and Long. It tells you exactly what pace and distance to run for each workout.

From Rhett on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 14:21:42 from 216.67.211.71

Great workout Smooth. So did any of the soccer girls beat you, or did you smoke them all? I'm betting they were amazed at your speed.

From LuzyLew on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 14:32:36 from 208.187.197.42

Did you run track in college or high school? You have such master plan for your work outs. I've used running schedules before, but I kind of think Sasha is right. One time he gave me some pre-race advice and said "what you need to do is, start out fast, then just hold your pace, and then at the end, run really fast". In otherwords, just run fast! So far (30 years later) I'm not convinced there is any work out that makes running fast any easier.

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 15:25:59 from 71.36.67.77

Rhett,

The girls had a 100m head start. I caught up to them by the first lap. I passed about 8 of them and actually lapped two stragglers. I wore my running skirt today and the girls were very complimentary. When I was stretching in the shade behind the track, some of the girls walked by and said: "Wow, you were fast." That made me feel good.

Luzy,

I have never run track. I did zero sports in elementary or high school. The first time I ran was when I was at BYU-Hawaii in a PE class with a bunch of Polynesian ruby players. Speedwork is still very new to me. I wish I had started running younger. I really don't know if I could get any faster by running these intervals. I'm just following the schedule and hope for the best. These speedwork made me feel old and slow. :)

From Huans32 on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 15:52:05 from 138.64.2.76

AWESOME JOB!!! Look at her go. Tonight I will be doing the same one just a tiny bit faster. The longer intervals just seem tougher if you ask me. You got to focus more on your form and keep relaxed. But we will see what you think here in another weeek or 2.:) You are so stinkin fast.:)

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 16:34:27 from 71.36.67.77

Mark, you'll be running a WHOLE lot faster. My 5K pace is your recovery pace. THANKS for the encouragement though. I'm so NOT a fan of speedwork. Can't wait to see how your workout goes tonight.

From Kelli on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 23:16:44 from 71.219.89.21

I have done Yoga with all of the YW before, and we had smoothies, too! It was our spa night! Lots of fun. BUT, those days are over, I got a new calling. So, I get to finish out camp and then do one more week with the YW and then i am moving on FINALLY.

Those workouts are hard. I read that book and it scares me. Are we really 12 weeks out?

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 23:27:14 from 71.36.66.62

Kelli,

New calling? That's always exciting. The YWs are gonna miss you. I can just picture them with tears when you get released. You are a GREAT YW leader!!!

Yep, 12 weeks out. I don't know how long I can follow that schedule. It's already killing me. It should be a piece of cake for you...I think the BBK workouts are so much harder.

From Bec on Wed, Jul 15, 2009 at 19:07:43 from 67.177.35.60

You are so cute. You would fit right in with the Beehives, I bet they loved you! Great workout, you have some really quick miles in the mix there, good job.
