Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

21 Weeks to Boston '09

Spent most of morning pouring over my past running log, studying the 24/55 schedule and looking for my misplaced heart rate monitor.  According to P. Pfitzinger, I'm supposed to be in the Mesocycle 1 Endurance phase of training.  The last 7 weeks I've been running by feel and according to the constrain of time.  Today I want to see where my tempo pace is at.  According to McMillan my tempo run paces should be between 8:20 to 8:42.

The plan was to run the warm up miles westward where there are 3 miles of down and uphill running.  I would then run eastward on Bull River Rd for the middle miles which are rolling with no significant hills.  I want to see how many of the middle miles I could run at tempo pace.  Then I would run the last westward miles to cruise home.

Everything looked good on paper; but I'm terrible at finding my pace.  I had to glance at my Garmin mid-mile to see what my pace was.  I would get distracted or lazy.

Here goes:  I ran 8 miles in 1:10:15.  Average pace:  8:46.  HR:  176.  Splits:  8:46, 8:46, 9:34, 8:35, 8:33, 8:48, 8:20, 8:48.

Looking at the splits I don't think I was doing the tempo run right.  It looks more like a steady-state run.  O well, at least I got her done.  Except for a slight tightness on the right calf during the last mile, legs felt fine.  Perhaps yoga tonight would help.  I will work on focus, and sustain a 8:30 pace for 4 miles next time.

Sounds like you're ready to start some serious Boston training. Go get it!

At left it says your goal type is "Boston Qualifier" but you've been there done that and kicked it.

From marion on Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 19:37:24

You know, sometimes I wonder if we have fun running sometimes? ;D It is so complicated. You are going to do GREAT at Boston! Be sure to get some advice from a runner who has run Boston. My sister in law had a horrible first Boston and learned a ton from it.

you are such an inspiration to me :)

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 20:11:27

All of that is too complicated! I just run...sometimes fast, sometimes slow, but nothing too technical here!

You are awesome, you will do great!

Fly --

Not sure how serious the training is gonna be. I always start the week with high hopes then fizzle out. I looked at my training a year ago this time I was doing maintenance miles 'till 18 weeks out. This time around I want to fine-tune it a little. Yeah, my short-term goal is to run Boston 09 with a BQ time and secretly hoping for a PR.

I can't remember. Are you running Boston 09?

Marion --

I run for fun 80% of the time. I almost always find joy in running. The only time I don't is when I had charlie horse which really scares me. When I am training for a goal marathon, I need to be a little more focus. Boston 08 was my first Boston and I had a blast, even got my PR. I absolutely loved every minute of it. It was more than a marathon. It was an event. Then the rest of the marathons I ran in 2008 were for fun...but I do notice my speed had suffered. There's so much to learn and I am a very slow learner.

Kelli --

Most of the time I just run, not really knowing how much and how fast. I heard that not all miles are created equal and different types of running give different purposes. So this training cycle, I want to experiment with tempo run and interval/speed workout. I try to keep it simple. I can't do anything technical. You have natural talents which I don't.

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 23:26:48

I do not know where this natural talent comes from! I do not have it. Honestly, I need someone to teach me how to do all of the technical stuff, I know it would help make me stronger and faster. You are smart to be doing it!

Smooth --

Are you serious?? 21 weeks!! Stink!! I need to get better fast!!

Have I told you that I love you and think that you radiate awesomeness all of the time??

Smooth...

Wow!!! Those are some fantastic splits. You're going to do great in Boston. Do you think you will PR again? That would be really cool! I'm glad your legs are feeling better.

21 weeks to Boston and only 312 days 'til St. George! WooHoo!

Sounds like you've got a great training plan Smooth. You'll do awesome.

From JeffC on Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 11:16:01

Wow, 21 weeks till Boston! Today was a great workout for you. Great job on getting it done. As you get further into the training cycle those spilts will come down to the 8:30s I'm sure.

From Smooth on Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 11:38:24

Kelli --

You have excellent running form. You are a natural runner. You are born to run. Just get Scott to be your coach. You're a speed reader. Have you read any running books? I know some are really technical. I could never understand all these VO2Max, lactaide threshold stuff. I'm learning as I go. Your marathon times show that you're already a FAST runner. I am sure you are just going to be stronger and faster. For now, just concentrate on rehabing that knee so you can get back to running pain free again. That's really the ultimate goal for all of us...find joy in running! No more pain.

Teena --

No worries. We all know that we only need a solid 16 weeks of training. You will be ready for Boston. The important thing is to stay healthy. Be patient with your healing. You are not loosing any fitness at all. Pick up the training when the New Year comes. We're gonna have so much fun at Boston. Just thinking about it makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over. LOVE YOU!!!

Dale --

Thanks. Yeah, to PR at BOSTON will be the ultimate dream. There are too many variables for me: 1) I'm getting older 2) I still haven't figured out the muscle cramp issue 3) Boston's weather is notorious for being unpredictable. 2008 had the perfect weather so I lucked out. Who knows what 2009 will bring. Meanwhile I just try to do everything I have control over the best way I know how. I am not going to kill myself over it though. If I don't reach my goal at Boston, there are always other marathons. Did you read that article about that 90 yr old Gladys running the Honolulu Marathon? IF I live to be old I want to run to be old.

Cal --

I want you to know that you were my virtual coach for the longest time. You are my Grand Slam hero. Not sure if I got a great training plan. It worked for me last year so I'm using it again and just learn from experimenting. Hoping for the best.

From Kelli on Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 13:10:00

Ah, thanks!!! You are too nice. It must be my long legs.

From Rhett on Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 13:38:32

Great work out Smooth. Sounds like you are already ready for Boston training. I never officially start my Boston Training till Jan 1. That gives me 15 1/2 weeks this year.
