Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

I was all bummed last night thinking I'd have to run 8 of my 18 miler alone this morning.  Thought about canceling the JRP plan and just run around the hood.  I was reading some scriptures and talks (in preparing for my Sunday's talk) at bed time.  The inspiring words gave me comfort and reassurance that I am NEVER alone!

At 7:50am I drove myself down to the JRP as planned while Karen (Sky) and Wendy drove in separate car.  To my joy and delight, Maynard and Chad were there!!!  SO SO SO SO HAPPY to see them especially Maynard whom I haven't seen forever.  I was VERY excited to find out Chad's plan was to run 14!  YaHOOO!!!

Temp was 19F,  a whopping 5 degrees warmer than last Sat.  Seriously it felt much warmer to me;  perhaps it was the company of 4 great running friends...never underestimate the power of friends!  :)  I did not look at the watch once until we stopped to say goodbye to Chad's neighbor (who had joined us on his last 3 of a 10 miler).  That's when I realized I hadn't started my watch.  It was so much fun running and chatting that the miles just flew by.  Chad and I turned around at mile 5.3 while the rest of the group turned back at mile 5.  They waited for us and we ran the remaining 5 back to the car together.  Thanks all for making the run so fun!!! :)

After bidding Karen, Wendy and Maynard goodbye, Chad and I headed north for 4 more.  It was hard to get going after stopping plus we had a bit of uphill.  Those 4 miles just flew by like the migrating geese overhead.  There were a lot of hunters out today.  We saw two shot ducks on the side of the trail.  I saw a hunter walking from the river with a fat duck in his hand and a rifle in the other.  And heard many many gunshots.

THANKS Chad for running with me!  Bid him good bye, ate a gu and headed back south for 4 more.  Re-set the Garmin as suggested by Chad so I didn't need to do any math since I forgot to restart the thing earlier.  Didn't look at the watch until it beeped at mile 2 right in front of the pop at Willow Park.  Stopped to use the pop before running back to the car.  I was surprised how good my legs felt on the heel of a 63+ mile week that had one tempo and 3 hilly runs in it.  The only negative part was the air pollution.  My airway is definitely irritated.

Didn't look at the pace until I got home.  I'm surprised to see that the first 14 miles (9.5 of data) was run at 9:36 AP and the last 4 at 9:10 AP.  My last mile was 8:50 which felt easy.  I didn't want to push it because of the icky air.

Have a question:  If the air outside is bad, wouldn't the air indoor bad too?  Granted that it is recirculated indoor air, but over time it's still outside air that's being recirculated, right? The last time I check, my furnace only filters dust and dirt, not the micro gunk that the EPA people warn us of.  What's an asthmatic runner to do?  Wish we'd get a nice storm to blow away this smog!!!

Great run with friends, sorry about your persistent temperature inversion, I know those can sometimes last forever on the Wasatch front.

All I know is that when I run outside in this that I cough up a storm ... and inside I don't. :) I know that when we got our new AC/HVAC unit a couple of years ago that we had to pay a huge amount to have all of the special filters/cleaning systems, etc. that would help with my asthma. However, I have no idea of Gold's Gym has something like that. Still, I can breathe there. Same thing with the Oval.

I did miss you a lot this morning! I kept thinking about all of you running with each other. I am glad you had so much fun! And you are right ... you are never alone. In fact, I am not sure that I have ever met a person who is more loved that you. You are surrounded with admirers!!!! :) :) :)

See you soon! :)

Great run Smooth. :) Doesn't good company really make the miles feel so much easier? I am glad that you had a party running with you today.

Don't know much about filtered air... I just know the air outside is gross and brings on the asthma. I felt gross breathing it today.

From Smooth on Sat, Dec 17, 2011 at 19:39:14 from 174.27.196.172

SSF ~ good points. We just installed a new HVAC and I'm hoping it would be better. We had the whole house duct cleaned last month and I can't believe all the dust/dirt in the ducts.

Anyway, I am torn between running on the treadmill for long runs (which I believed cause my patella tendonitis last year) and running in icky air that aggravate my airway causing asthma.

I miss you a lot this morning! :( Your statement, "I am NOT sure that you have ever met a person more..." is very kind...but I AM VERY SURE you have met and known others more loved than me. In fact, I know people are drawn to you and your selflessness! :)

Bec ~ Yes, good company is such a blessing! I am the luckiest girl! I did miss you and RAD this morning although I know I won't be able to keep up with you! :)

My airway is so irritated now it's like there are millions of cotton balls in there and I can't cough them up! sigh! Please please let there be a nice storm while we sleep... :)

stick to outside for long runs for that reason Smooth. My knee felt funny after my 18 miler and after running 9 miles not even 24 hours later outside it took a bit for the muscles to adust. It is just the same move over and over on the mill whereas outside we can adjust things as you are well aware. about the air quality not sure of the answer. Some inside gyms stink too well for me because of all the cleaners people are spraying after they use some equipment....that doesn't make air quality good for me so I prefer the outdoor even in bad quality air. good for you on pulling out a rather decent 18 miler in smog!!!

From Chad on Sun, Dec 18, 2011 at 00:53:38 from 71.199.13.143

Thanks for pulling me along those last 4. I was getting a little tired.

It may have been a little warmer this morning but there was more smog. There was more sun last week and I think it warmed up faster with less gunk to breathe. I think with your knee and irritated airway, I'd mix it up. Maybe if you can do a little bit of both neither will get to bad, but what do I know?

From RAD on Sun, Dec 18, 2011 at 01:36:33 from 98.202.23.178

From what I understand the hvac systems actually filter air pretty well. Not perfectly, but MUCH better than outside. That being said, I would do long runs outside. What you need to do is come on out to Herriman where the gunk is a little thinner and run with us! :) Most of the time when I run around my 'hood in the morning I see 'above' the gunk. By the time I got out this morning it was cloudy to the west - which means I'm in the thick of it, but usually it isn't too bad. See, a solution for everything!

I'm SO glad you had good company on the run this morning!! It really does make a difference. I can't wait for next week when I don't have to work around darn basketball games!!!

From Nancy on Sun, Dec 18, 2011 at 10:56:50 from 76.23.21.118

Great run. I don't know about the air, but I do know I would always rather run outside than inside.

Thanks for the invite, Smooth. Awesome run!
