Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Goal was to run a MLR with hills at easy pace.  It seems to take a few miles for the arthritic joints to warm up.  Knowing this helps to NOT cut the run short.

Decided to run the hills first for 7 miles, down 3rd W to Sego Lily Elementary via Frontage, then back up; down 3200 N to Fox Hollow Elementary then back up to 3rd W keeping an easy pace.  Left knee and hip complained on the downhills; felt fine on the uphills.

Was warm going south and west; chilly going north and east.  That's the nature of running in winter even with the slightest breeze.  Thus it helps to have a zippable outer layer.

Finished strong with the last couple miles at HM pace.  Splits: 10:17, 10:13, 10:05, 10:39, 10:08, 10:00, 10:38, 10:05, 9:53, 9:30, 8:37, 8:33.

Will see how the body response to 50+mpw for 2 weeks before deciding between 55/18 or the 70/18 schedule.

Just sent in the Ogden Marathon registration.  This is the earliest I've signed up for Ogden.

Smart plan!!! :)

I have been studying like mad and taking care of some errands that had to be done. I CAN NOT wait for school to be done for a few weeks. :)

You had an excellent run and you were running so strong in the end. AWESOME!!!!

AND ... I think it is so cute how you send your registrations in instead of doing them online! :)

I need to register for Painters and Ogden this evening ... maybe I should do it right now while I am thinking about it.

We are still going down and staying together for Painters, right?

Love you SSF!!!!

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 18:23:38 from 174.23.217.47

Hey SSF! I can picture you studying like CRAZY!!! BEST of LUCK!!! You will ACE it, I'm sure!!! :)

I sent in Ogden's registration b/c I get $5 discount thru the Slam. Last time I did it on line and cost me extra $8.

Yes, going and staying together. Let me know if you get the time-share. I am SO EXCITED!!! MISS YOU SOOOO MUCH! LLL LLL LLL

From Teena on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 18:27:54 from 174.52.45.85

SSF -- It is so much fun chatting with you right now ... I desperately needed a break.

I am sure we will get the time share. Right now there are several left. I am going to wait and get it on bonus time if I can. But if they start filling up before then I will use points.

Love you!

Oh yeah ... did you decide whether or not you wanted to stay Saturday night as well?

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 18:35:37 from 174.23.217.47

My church starts at 9 in Jan. So I think I shouldn't stay Sat. night; unless you have FUN stuff planned for Sat. I'm flexible with Prez. not coming!

From Teena on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 18:39:32 from 174.52.45.85

Should we take our hubbies? Are they going to be okay w/o us??? :)

I'm happy to come home on either day. :)

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 18:54:46 from 174.23.217.47

I'm trying to "wean" mine off. He is really fine w/o me. He has so much to do every weekend.

I want to have a girls only weekend w/o feeling guilty. Is that bad?

From Teena on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 18:57:29 from 174.52.45.85

Nope!!! Not bad at all. Plus I can only imagine how Ry and Prez would handle our giggling and incessant talking about the race. :) :) :)

Then maybe we should stay Saturday night and just go to church in SG so that we can just chill and watch movies on Saturday night too!!

Like I said ... I am good either way. :)

From Kathie on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 20:57:33 from 63.248.105.188

Yes I am but I think "the" party will be at your place!!!!

From vinh on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 21:09:40 from 71.68.254.197

Great run Smooth! Gotta love the hill training. Can you explain to me about your training schedule? What do you mean by 55/18 or 70/18? Sorry I'm a newbie runner.

From allie on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 21:15:57 from 98.202.119.100

same question as vinh. what is 55/18 and 70/18? i saw it on teena's blog as well.

great run and mileage today. ogden just keeps getting more and more popular, it's nuts! i will be running the half this year so i will get to cheer you in at the finish line! oh, and that is a great skiing pic. i love it :)

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 22:32:24 from 174.23.217.47

Kathie ~ Are you planning to go to Cougar's b'day party/5th year Flyers anniversary after the race? I am so excited to see everyone there!

vinh & allie ~ the 18 refers to the weeks of training. It's exactly 18 weeks from yesterday to Boston on April 19. Boston is my goal race. For Boston 2009 I used the 55/24 and found that 24 weeks was a bit too long. 55 & 70 refers to the maximum miles per week (only TWO of the weeks max. out at that mileage). The schedules are in the book, "Advanced Marathoning" by Pete Pfitzinger.

allie ~ This will be my 4th year running Ogden Marathon. I cramp up bad every time. I think the Half is better. I'm doing the Slam again that's the reason I run the Full.

From Bec on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 22:59:59 from 76.23.55.210

The slam again?! Do you ever slow down young lady? I don't think so. Your miles today are fantastic, especially on those hills. Stay healthy and strong. 18 weeks until Boston!

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 23:15:06 from 174.23.217.47

Hey Bec!!! I'm addicted to marathons. Prez. doesn't even roll his eyes anymore. In fact, he reminds me to sign up before too late. Sometimes he calls home in the middle of the day and speaks in a disguished voice saying something like: "Mrs. Lew, this is the race organizer calling in behalf of the Ogden Marathon. Sorry to inform you that the Ogden Marathon is full; better luck next year." or "This is Wasatch Running Center, Ms Lew, due to the Grand Slam's popularity we are giving other people a chance to participate in the Slam and therefore you're not chosen to run it this year." Silly him!!! :) :) :)

Can you believe Boston is less than 18 weeks away? It seems like yesterday that we were in Boston. It was SO FUN to have your family there!

From Bec on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 00:27:26 from 76.23.55.210

Pres. HAHAHAHA!!! I love it! I bet you believe every word he says too. Good times.

Boston, oh Boston. I will be journeying back next spring for that AMAZING race again. I loved hanging out with my fam and yours.

From Huans32 on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 08:47:43 from 138.64.8.51

I have got to sign up for Ogden still too. ARGH!! I have a feeling it is going to close early for sure this year again.

Larry is the best btw.:)

From AmberG on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 11:29:10 from 209.33.225.26

Smooth, , , ha I love that your hubby calls you and gives you a hard time about signing up for your races! You are so lucky to have a supportive husband, it's not easy to be married to us "CRAZY RUNNERS" I tell ya! You are once committed gal, , , I love that you just keep going, smiling all the way.

BTW I also LOVE your new pic! SO cute! I also want to check out that book you mentioned, sounds like it has good running schedule/options!

Good luck w/ your Boston training, , yeah, such a fun thing to look forward too!

Have a great week, , , your plans w/ Teena also sound so fun! :) You two are cute, , , , I hope you stay in SG as long as possible! Why not? :) You still need to try those delicious cookies!

From Rhett on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 12:53:53 from 74.41.249.102

Look at that perfect skiing form. I like the new picture.

From Jon A on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 17:03:14 from 67.214.249.195

Smooth, you are so awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing your training take you into Boston and get a new PR.

Nice run today. :-) (well yesterday)

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 19:14:16 from 174.23.217.47

Mark ~ Better sign up soon. I got an email last week from GOAL that they were 70% full.

Amber ~ You're so sweet! Yes, I will definitely look for that place you told me about for the best cookie in SG.

We DO have supportive hubbies...us CRAZIES!

Oh, you will like Advanced Marathoning. Although you could probably write a book on advanced elite marathoning! :)

Rhett ~ That was a great ski day. The pic was actually snapped when I came to a stop...perfect standing form! HA! :)

Jon!!!! How are you? I was just thinking about you when I was running at around the Smith's light and wondered if you were running. It will be so fun if you and Kelly would run with me. Are you running SG 1/2 (Painter's)?

From Jon A on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 19:29:18 from 67.214.249.195

Smooth, That would be cool if we could get together. I think we run earlier than you. We got out at 4:30 today. Maybe we can go on a Sat run with you.

I slipped and fell on ice today, my knee hurts now, but I'll be ok.

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 19:37:14 from 174.23.217.47

4:30!!!! Yikes that's WAY EARLY! SORRY you slipped and fell on ice! It's SO DARK that early. Sure hope your knee is OKAY!

I'm game for a Sat. run!

From Jon A on Thu, Dec 17, 2009 at 10:31:54 from 66.182.65.44

Smooth, Kelly and I will let you know the Sat. plan, and we'll see if we can meet. With the # of miles you may need on a Sat. you may have to go more before or after our run :-)

From Smooth on Thu, Dec 17, 2009 at 11:16:19 from 174.23.217.47

Jon, sounds good! My son, daughter-in-law and grand baby are flying in town Sat morning. I will need to start early...but NOT at 4:30am. Suppose to run 15; but I might cut it short.
