Long-Term Running Goals:

Run happy and healthy all the days of my life. Be an example and inspiration to my family.

Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Short version:

LOVE this course!  Had a WONDERFUL training run!!!  Had a lot of fun seeing, cheering such GREAT running friends, Kelli, allie, AndyB, Ryan, Steve, Crockett, Josse, WendyC, EmilyH and many many others!

I owe this run to my dear dear friend Lowell who came all the way from Pocatello to run it with me.  I enjoyed every single second of running this crazy Sogonapmit with him.  He provided me with headlamp, reflective tapes, blue probe-light, and flashlight/glow stick.  He protected me from dangerous traffic, potential harm, and literally kept me from self-destruction.  He was literally my guardian angel.   He is the most kind, caring, generous, big-hearted friend!  He spread joy and goodwill all morning!  I am so so so lucky to be counted as one of his gazillion friends!  :) :) :)

Long version (for my personal journal):

I got zero sleep Fri. night after spending a fun long day with Lowell and preparing for out of town guests.  I was so tired and wound-up that I took a TylenoPM around 8 and went to bed at 10 hoping to catch some shut eyes.  Just as I was about to doze off, my cell rang.  It was my son, Eric, calling from Cleveland, with news that his wife had the baby 3.5 weeks early.  It's a boy!!!  5lb 8oz 18" long!!! :) :) :) We talked for a good 30 min.  While hubby snored away I stayed wide awake with excitement and anxiousness, not for the run, but for Eric's little family, so far away and needing help.  I finally got up at 2am to get dressed, ate a yogurt and drove to AF High School for the 3am start.

The Start:  The nice thing about going to an out-n-back marathon is that there's no need for drop bag, long bus ride or pop wait.  Got threr with 5 min to spare.  Parked the car by Lowell's, put on the headlamp, fuel belt and bib, ate a banana and walked 50 yards to the Start/finish arch.  The RD gave a long speech about how nice this course is and some last min. instruction: "follow the cones...stay to left side of road up the canyon...there will be help-yourself aid stations every 2 miles.." and a long speech about how great this race is gonna be... blah blah blah until someone mercifully stopped his talking by announcing it's 3:06 and time to start already.  Kelli and JulieC were there to send us off with cheers! :)  Crockett along with 5-6 guys and couple of girls bolted out leaving Lowell, me and one other lady, Carrie, in their dust! :)

Mile 1-3:  The goal was to get to Tibble Fork Reservoir before the Start of the Timpanogos Half at 5:40 am.  I felt confident that I could do it in 2:30; but Lowell wanted to do the 4:1 Galloway method and since I've never done that before we figured the early start would give us the extra cushion just in case.  So glad I drove the course and walked portion of the trail.  The traffic cones were spaced a bit far apart for the first couple miles and the course was not marked.  Carrie missed the first left turn, we chased after her to get her back on course.  Lowell said he would have missed it too even though we drove the course less than 12 hours ago.  Things look differently in the dark! :)

Mile 4-6:  There are advantages of running in a dark summer night.  You don't see the incline or the distance of the hills.  I love the cool peaceful night air and the sound of crickets (when Lowell wasn't talking or singing or doing military chants).  But I also quickly discovered some surprises.  The south portion of Cedar Hills Parkway has houses bordering both sides of the trail.  We were blasted with sprinklers from both sides, like going thru an automated car-wash!  We were soaked head to toes, FUN!!!!  So glad I had my fuel belt because aid stations were not set up yet.  While Lowell took a quick pit-stop at the park's bathroom, I ran a little bit ahead.  I soon discovered another surprise, nocturnal creatures (mostly cats) darting across the path.  I decided I'd better stay close to Lowell who had me stick to the 4:1.  He set his Garmin to alert the run/walk with a 10 sec beep.  The first few walking cycles seemed unnecessary; but by the time we hit the steep hills in the canyon I found myself asking Lowell if it's time to walk yet! :)

The UP canyon miles:  The headwind started at the golf course and got worse as we headed up the canyon then I began to wheeze and cough.  In the haste of leaving, I did not take or bring my inhaler.  Where's my SSF when I needed her? :)  Lowell had me draft off of him.  I barely kept up and was so glad whenever the walking cycle started.  The buses started coming from behind.  We turned on the blue flashing light sticks and waved so the drivers could see us.  We noticed how closely the buses brushed across the cones.  Lowell would pick up the knocked-over ones.  We even picked up fallen rocks off the road.  We had to step off the road and waited a few times when buses were coming and going on both lanes.  Kelli and JulieC passed us around mile 7.  I collected my hugs and watched them ran effortlessly up. :) :) :)

Was so glad to reach the mile 8+ aid station where I ate a gu and pocket one.  The wind subsided and my breathing got under control.  The sound of the river was very soothing.  The Start of the Half was a massive congestion.  The spot light blinding me and I couldn't see the arch.  A bus was unloading right in our path.  We walked weaving around the runners who were oblivious to our trying to reach the arch.  There was no chute on the left as promised.  We walked around to cross the timing mat which I did not see but assumed was there and dropped off our headlamps in the garbage bag held by one volunteer.  I forgot to turn the headlamp off (Ooops!) and asked him to do it for me.  When Lowell finally retrieved it at the end of the race, the headlamp was still on! Ooops!  Lowell stopped to visit with his niece.  I got a hug from Maynard! :)  We re-positioned our lighting gears and headed back down.  I think our half time was 2:22ish.

The DOWN canyon miles:  We passed Carrie coming up and two groups of walkers going down.  We saw buses still coming up which made us think the Half would start late.  We were running on the right side of the road when an oncoming car and another car from behind approached which turned out to be the lead vehicle ? because the first Half guy was following it.  So FUN to cheer him and a little later, the next two leading men.  The 4th or 5th guy was friendly, he even answered our question of when the race started.  I kept thinking allie should be passing any minute now.   The first girl ran by alone.  Soon came allie followed by another girl and Mary Ann.  I was SO HAPPY & EXCITED to see allie!  She was running smoothly and confidently! :) :) :)  We exchanged quick hellos and cheers!  She looked AWESOME running strong and controlled!  :)

It was so FUN when friends and neighbors (Emily, Wendy, Josse and others) exchanged hellos and encouragements as they passed...Rachelle from the blog introduced herself...she's SO NICE!  The highlight was when AndyB called out: "Is that you? Smooth?" by the golf course (mile 21ish)!  So glad he was back from having been sick and running this course! :)  So so so happy to see him!!!! I tried to stay out of the way of the speedy Halfers.  I know what it feels like to have to weave around slower runners/walkers on a narrow parkway.  I had to do that around the slower Halfers at Ogden.

The 4:1 method really helped preserve the legs.  I did not feel any fatigue other than a little niggle on the left hip flexor perhaps from running on the uneven road shoulder.   Lowell was cheering on the runners, volunteers and spectators.  He would try to get people to sing together like a choir at every aid station or groups of spectators.  He was hillarious!

Mile 23 to the Finish:  After we spilled out of the parkway, (btw, it would have been nice if the sprinklers were on then 'cause it was getting warm) I knew we had 3.2 to go.  Lowell was having too much fun entertaining the spectators.  He stopped to talk to the families.  I just wanted to get the run over with.   When I heard him asked "What's your name? Nic? I had a ... named Nic..." I thought to myself: "O no, this could take forever!"  So I did the unthinkable...I left him!  I felt terrible because I promised myself that I would finally finish a marathon WITH him!  But dang it, my leg muscles were about to seize if I stopped so I kept going and turning back every min or so yelling "C'mon, Lowell!  Lowell!!!"  I think the other runners were annoyed.  I even asked one marathoner if he saw Lowell. :(

I could tell the runners did not like the hill at their mile 12 going up by the temple.  My legs felt fine, which rarely happened at mile 25.  I kept a steady pace and kept looking for my hubby's car thinking he'd be leaving the temple about then and driving to the finish.  I saw a photographer and waved.  Turned out he's my friend, Cougar!  I saw him earlier at the mouth of the canyon cheering his daughter! :)

On the downside of the hill, the shin started to tighten up.  Just then a black and white cat darted out in front of me, my right foot clipped him!  The spectators gasped.  A girl ran passed and asked: "Did you know you ran over that cat?  That's not good!"  I said: "yeah,  me or the cat?"  I think Lowell would've been disappointed at me!  What a joy and relief when I saw Kelli and Misty running towards me.  The joy was short-lived when I saw two emergency vehicles parked in our path, one with the door open.  Hope whoever it was was okay.  Kelli & Misty guided me around the ambulance.  I crossed the finish, hugged my friends and hubby and ran back for Lowell.  At the corner I saw Maynard and cheered him but I don't think he saw me.  Then I saw Lowell and ran the last little bit with him.

Post-run:  We walked thru the food alley twice snarfing down food.  I was also getting cold.  It was fun to see so many friends (Maynard, Ryan & Kalai Jonson, Emily Hansen, Wendy Clark, Don & Ruth Bigger, Karin Rowley , Nancy Bishop , Rob Rhode and many many others).  Hubby wanted to go home badly because we had out of state company coming and I had to help make sushi and cut fruits for the Asian Ward reunion.   But the RDs had pleaded us to stay for the award ceremony and promised there'd be nice gifts/prizes for the *elite Sogo marathoners* and group pictures.   So we stayed.  It was so NICE to hang with Lowell, Kelli, Maynard and Pron8r but we could hardly talk to each other b/c of the obnoxiously LOUD rap music.

Finally we were happy to cheer our friends who ran the Half and took podium but there was confusion on the first three overall men and women placing.  Over 2 hrs of waiting, the thing ended without a slight mention of the marathon.  I felt so badly for Kelli who WON the Sogonapmit!!!  She was the first woman to cross the finish (some 3 hrs earlier) even before the Halfers.  The RDs have totally forgotten about the marathoners!  Shame on them!!!  But the medal was nice and hefty.  I had a WONDERFUL training run on a BEAUTIFUL course with the AWESOMEST friends!

Me & Lowell goofing! :)

Me & Kelli, the Sogonapmit AWESOME WINNER! :)

Me, Maynard & Kelli patiently waiting for the award ceremony to start. :)

My GREAT neighbors, the Jonsons!  Ryan ran AWESOME taking podium! :)

Our *own* Sogonapmit group picture! :)

THANK YOU LOWELL and Kelli!  Love you so much!!! :)

WOW, great report!!! It was worth waiting for! I am so glad that you had fun and that you did not get run over by any cars or buses!!! That was a tad crazy for sure. I am sure Lowell protected you well, not a fun course to be alone on at all. I wold not do it!

OK, those pictures of me are goofy. I am a dork. But, in my defense, I had been up since 1 am and had only had 2 hours of sleep. I was drunk tired!!!

Thanks again for getting me to run this race. It was the best experience ever. It was very lame that NONE of the marathoners got a darn thing at the awards ceremony, I am trying not to be bitter about it. We worked hard, we paid more money, and we deserved awards just like the halfers. RIDICULOUS.

WHAT A SPECIAL WAY to be with friends!! YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION, just going and going and going!! recover well, my friend. I assume you will with the 4:1 plan, whatever that is. Thanks for the hug!!

Sounds like so much fun. I'm happy for you and I loved your report.

Great reaport (as always) Smooth. Hitting the cat made me laugh. :) That sounds like a fun race.

Wow, Smoothie, another great marathon for you. I kept thinking about you all night while I was trying to sleep, hoping everything was going ok. I'm excited to run it next year. Wish I didn't have to miss it this year.

You ran great and got to have great company. Cool pictures, too!!!

I was worried they would forget about the marathoners because every email I got about the race only mentioned the half, which I thought was strange. We should get Kelli a trophy for that win. She deserves it.

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 01, 2011 at 20:12:40 from 71.219.99.3

Ahhh, Dale, you are so nice! I went to the finish line/awards ceremony of the Black Ridge Tri right after (same place as football try outs for my son) and they cheered really loud for me there! They being RAD, her sister, Bec, and Brent.

Another great run Smooth!!! You have way too much fun at every race you run!

From Rob on Mon, Aug 01, 2011 at 21:34:18 from 204.15.86.95

Sounds like the marathon is where all the fun was, That really stinks they didn't even mention you guys at the awards. Sounds like everyone had a great attitude about it though.

You hit a cat???? Oh SSF, that one is for the books!

I love you.

I am so happy that you had such a wonderful time. Sounded absolutely marvelous!!!

I love you!!!

Nice run smooth....I always love to read your reports. I can't believe they didn't even mention the marathon....you need to make them aware of their mistake!!!!

LOVED the long race report. You are just simply amazing and I was beyond excited when I passed you. You looked so happy and that really encouraged me to stay positive.

Congrats on a great race!

loved the report, smooth! those are some great pictures and it was fun to read your commentary from each section of the race. i can't tell you how excited i was when i saw you in the canyon. just like TOU last year, my split right after seeing you was one of my fastest in the whole race. just seeing you gives me energy and makes me happy. thanks for cheering and saying hi :) you did great at that crazy marathon -- way to go!

Smooth, I'm so glad you had someone to take care of you with all that stuff! :) You did so great!! Way to get everyone rallied up to do it. I so would have been there if I was up to par. Someday I'd love to do a marathon a month with you!

From Nancy on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 13:56:43 from 76.23.21.118

Nice race. You sure make running sound fun and easy.

From RAD on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 14:11:08 from 76.27.16.189

Lowell really is an amazing guy! I'm glad I got some of the pre-race time with you guys :)

I laughed SO hard about you kicking the cat. Ha! You now have an alter ego: Smooth, the cat kicker! Watch out felines, she doesn't stop for anyone. Friend of the mice and birds :)

Congrats on an amazing marathon! I'm SO glad you had a good experience with Lowell and that he was there to protect you as well. Sounds like the 4:1 method isn't too shabby after all?

Congrats as well on the new grand baby!! 3 1/2 weeks early is crazy and I'm sorry it kept you up, but I'm sure it helped with some energy to push through. Good news always does that for me :) I hope you had a great weekend with friends and that the sushi turned out well, despite your linger longer at the race for a whole lot of NOTHING!

Great report Smooth! Great "training" run. Ha, your faster on your training run than I am in a race. Your awesome.

Every time I come to your blog, you've run another marathon... AMAZING!

On vacation, I ran into a guy named Kevin, I'm blanking on the last name, that works at the same bank as Larry. I told him to tell Larry "Hi" for me and Doone.

From josse on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 18:22:42 from 75.244.241.246

Great job on such a tough marathon!! You helped me keep going when i saw you along the way, I was so tired and not feeling well. But I thought to myself she has done twice as much as me so I need to stop being a baby. Thanks :)

From Smooth on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 19:06:09 from 67.2.116.101

Kel ~ I'm so glad you ran this crazy tough marathon and you WON it! You did AWESOME!!! It goes to show that you are in such GREAT shape and ready to race a marathon at any moment! SO IMPRESSIVE!!!

It was a fun morning! So HAPPY you came and won!

I think those RDs were happy that we were there to proof that the Sogonapmit was a good idea while they poured all their energy and attention to run an inaugural Half. It was way over their head. Now that it's over, I'm just glad that no one was hurt.

Julie ~ What are you talking about? My Sogonapmit training run pales compare to YOUR EILUJ marathon! YOU ROCK!!!

Thanks for the hug and it was GREAT seeing you (as always) albeit in the dark! You are the most amazing running machine EVER! :) I'm so excited for you to win the master at SGM!

Chad ~ Thanks!

Scott ~ You are great! You run that stuff everyday and for free! :)

Dale ~ THANKS for the text at 2:30am. It was perfect timing and just what I needed as I headed out the door. It was very sweet of you to be thinking of me running that crazy marathon! You're gonna love it next year. I wonder if they're gonna have it next year. It's too bad that they can't deliver what they promised. The course is great. The canyon is very narrow and winding so unless they do something about the safety issue it is a liability waiting to happen!

Kathie ~ If it's not fun, why do it, right? :) How's your shin doing? Hope it is continue to improve!

SSF ~ I seriously can't believe I hit that darn cat! But what was I to do at mile 25.5 running downhill with speedy half-marathoners on both sides and this stupid cat darted out? :) Lowell did warn me about a different kind of cat (aka cougars) on the prowls! :)

We missed you terribly! It would've been so much more funner if you were there! I LOVE YOU too!

Kimmy ~ My hubby went over to ask the RD if they were going to do the awards for the marathoners. The RD simply said they hadn't got the time results yet. This was when they were packing everything up to leave. And when I reminded the RD that he's the one who asked us to stay for the award ceremony with promise of group picture and special prizes. He simply said the prizes didn't arrive. But why didn't he tell us that at 3am before the start instead of making us wait for over 2 hours after we've finished! He then went to find a box of left-over samples and protein mix for the few that stayed, very lame! BTW, it isn't the prize that I was after. I just wanted them to recognize the overall winners. Kelli worked hard and ran fantastic. She deserved an award for that! I was very disappointed at the RDs. Btw, the awards for the Half were lame too. They look like something the scouts would make out of wood chips, or was it cheaps!

Rachelle ~ You were so happy and friendly when you passed me! Not to mention speedy and awesome! THANKS for saying hello! I hope to see you in your future races! You did awesome sans Garmin! :)

allie ~ I am so happy you ran one of your fastest splits after flying by me! :) Seriously your awesomeness was just spilling over! I was so proud of you and couldn't stop bragging about you! You are my hero! :) Watch out TOU, here allie comes! :)

Brooke ~ you are so dang cute! There was this guy doing the marathon with us in his five-fingers. We would leap frog with him. I kept thinking about you doing that in a marathon. He said he had to run slowly on the downhill in those five-fingers. So may be I can keep up with you in your barefoot while we run one marathon a month together! :)

Nancy ~ At our age (I think you're younger than me though), we have to make every race a fun and easy run! :)

Rachelle ~ Lowell was so cute with your boys on Friday. He was the same way with all the kids along the course. He cracks me up! I'm just so lucky to have him as a friend!

Hmm, Smooth, the cat-kicker has a nice ring to it...the next best thing to butt-kicker, right?!

The 4:1 works but only if Lowell was there to take charge though. Too bad he won't be at PCM to do it with us!

Thanks for the baby congratz. They name him Devin James. Just got his pix. he is adorable! I'm trying to figure a way to fly there to see him and help with the new moma and Emi.

Jon ~ I don't believe you! You run faster than me! When are you and Kelly gonna run with me again?

Rhett ~ I'll ask Larry if he knows Kevin. So happy you went on a vacation. Hope Doone got that well deserved and very much needed R & R!

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 21:03:47 from 71.219.99.3

I still am baffled as to what happened. Do you think they just forgot we were there? Or assumed we had all left maybe? It was odd to have asked us all to PLEASE stay and then forget about us entirely. HOWEVER, I would not change a thing. LOVED the race. I really did not feel like the way up in the dark with the cars and buses was all that bad. The buses watched out for us and I felt safe. I think having more people run it would help, the more headlamps the better!

THANKS again for persistence in getting others to join you. This really was the best race I have ever run. I know the fact that I was not all out killing myself made it enjoyable, but I worked hard!!! I had several race pace miles in there and it was just plain FUN! I need to run more of these less stressful races!

From Smooth on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 21:43:17 from 67.2.116.101

Josse ~ So happy you said hello when you passed me! You are awesome!!! WAY to power thru when you weren't feeling well! Those last few miles were TOUGH!!!

Kelli ~ Did you get the RD's email sent out this afternoon? He apologized and said he wants to make it right! He is going to give us a discount code for next year so you can run it again next year to defend your title! Hopefully there will be more crazy *headlampers*! :)

Oh yeah, I agree that we all need to run more less stress races just for fun! You still bust out some impressive times though! Not many people can run a marathon on the fly with no taper on a tough course with no sleep and perform so magnificently like you! It's like you can have the cake (and icream) and eat it too! :)

I will run it again if I am around next year! :)

You never cease to amaze me. Great race, great report, great attitude.
